Please stop and think "would this make more sense on Pistonheads?" Here are some retro cars, to jog your memory Here is a retro car with a modern car for valid reasons Here is a borderline modern, but interesting, car Here is a modern modified but boring car One or two slip through and I leave every so often as I know people are starting threads on them for genuine interest, but right now the front page of General has too many questions about modern stuff, so ... cut it out please

So is the cut off point year of registration or design/initial build year? For example my Boxster, not that it is of interest to people on here, is the last of 986 series which came into being in 1996 but mine is facelift version built in 2004 model year. I assume the cut off point is 2001 as designated by the cars for sale section? I have nothing of interest to people here that I can post ('88 scirocco aside but no ongoing work or points of interest to post about) but nice to know what the parameters are.

Just to clarify this is in General, not in Readers Rides. You want to put up a build thread for your Boxster in Readers Rides, go ahead. Hell as I say we occasionally get modern stuff posted in General (questions about certain cars or something just modern and interesting (like that new Honda EV with retro styling)). However this last week or so there have been like six threads like this, which is too many, and they have been of the "I'm interested in this {insert modern daily} how can I make it interesting?" variety. I'm not going to point out individual threads because in isolation they aren't so bad, the volume is the issue really.

My take on it, and this is just opinion, not fact, is that in 1998 you could buy a then launched mk1 focus, mk4 astra or mk4 golf. In my view modern chod that are still being run as daily bangers by their proud owners. The mk5 escort, mk3 astra and mk3 golf are in my eyes acceptable retro material. Not a guideline, just my personal cut off limit.

Not a guideline, just my personal cut off limit. This isn't that issue, this isn't borderline retro stuff from the late millenium... this is literally brand new cars, stuff that came out in the last ten years, or was still on sale in the last ten years. This is not a "what is retro" in terms of floating around the border lands of it all, we've done that repeatedly. This is a reminder, that whilst we do love talking about cars in this here general section, we prefer them to be older than say ten years, that is the job of other sites. Ideally they would be older than twenty (or even better twenty five) (or thirty ...).

"Retro" --- imitative of a style or fashion from the recent past.

For anyone wanting a full run down of "what is retro?" from the point of view of the people that started this forum : This is 4 years old (which is older than some of the cars that have been discussed recently ). Enjoy the questionable audio quality ALSO a reminder : I'm not complaining about the actual individual threads, no one has done anything wrong or anything like that. It is just there are more right now than usual, so just chill on new ones for a while thanks.

My interest in cars is as per this forum, more pre 80's than pre 2000's but due to only having one car I have no choice but to have a modern, its certainly not a 'normal' modern, but its modern in my view. Having said that Ive got the same enthusiasm for it as any other classic ive had. I know that doesnt make it retro, which is why ive never done a thread in readers rides for it, it just didnt seem right, but if I can make it relevant to a post in the general board, I have. Mabie I shouldnt? Its a 2011 car after all. So is it boarderline but interesting enough to slip through the net, or just modern? And have a proper car just to make me feel better.

I always considered my Celica GT on a 06 plate too modern for here even though they were released pre 2000. Maybe I was wrong but I’ve not got it now so it doesn’t matter.

I don't read anything about newish cars on here or anywhere else. I'm just not that interested. I also get mocked by my family because I view anything with a current format numberplate as modern. I wouldn't put anything much about my Saab on here because I regard it as too new. I did ask for advice on S-Types on here it seemed like the sort of thing RR members would know about. I just wish I'd listened to the rust stories. As pennance for mentioning it again, here's a 900 in front of a waterfall.

I've gradually come around to the idea that 1960's stuff is old now Haha... A buddy of mine ( sadly he passed away a couple of years ago ) used to say that anything based on a newer car than a '36, wasn't really a Hot Rod. And he'd know, he had a huge esoteric collection of Hot Rods, Racecars, Customs, etc. Another who has a one off Vintage racecar once told me it has a Quikchange rear end with Latemodel axles. Latemodel , to him, meant axles out of a '49 to '51 Ford...

Too true. can we shift the goal posts slightly on the for sale thread section yet? I thought it was like the 40 year rolling exemption rules and gains a year every passing year.....we should be at least up to 2003 by now....nothing to do with having a Sport Ka to shift.....no sireeeeee
