Have you ever gone looking for a part and try as you might it simply doesn’t exist or is sooo expensive you cannot justify it.
I’m currently looking for a seal for the breather valve on my Audi 80 part number 039103500 if you fancy having a go.
The only place I can find this tiny piece of rubber is Audi tradition and it’s €40!!!!
The one I have is badly damaged but is just about doing it’s job. But has anyone else had this problem

I'd be phoning places like this and asking if there's anything they can supply/ suggest - particularly if you've still got the (bits of) the old one for reference: simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Seals/c19/index.html The car makers in the main don't really want you keeping your old model on the road do they?

Ford scene tax is an annoying nuisance Especially for a middle aged person who remembers paying Fivers and tenners for parts that are now nearer 2 to 300 quid!!

Good topic - unobtainium for me is rubber window and sunroof seals. Perhaps one can buy generic shapes for it?

All my experience of restoring cars is mainly minis. Wherever you live in the country, there’s probably a place nearby that sells mini parts. I’m now working on a 205 gti and I can’t even get hold of an arch for it!
Had a similar issue with my Volvo 480 about 10 years ago. Volvo no longer made door or boot seals, had to make my own by hunting for any other car with a similar profile.

The car makers in the main don't really want you keeping your old model on the road do they? They wouldn't mind if it was profitable. These sorts of things would need production runs for a minimum quantity - that quantity is likely to have a higher per-unit cost, and thus unlikely to be able to shift them. If demand is high, they'd do it - but it isn't, so they don't.

edwardbearI presume you have tried your local main stealer. Is there a VW / Skoda /Seat part equivalent? Any German based RR's who can forward it on to you at less extortionate rates? Failing that just can you not just use a grommet...

I was looking for a nearside baffle panel for my MK2 jag and nothing has come up on e-bay, at suppliers or at shows so in the end I have bit the bullet and bought one for just over £200, i'm now convalescing from open wallet surgery :-(
When I restored my last MK2 the final bit I needed was the chrome bezel in the centre of the steering wheel, it was a little tine piece around 1.5" in diameter and it cost around £50 but it was the last part I needed so I bit the bullet and ordered it. Still hurts when I think about it.

But what you need to remember is the tooling for a lot of the parts is hanging around somewhere at a supplier so the development and design has been done which is where the cost is, a Vauxhall/Opel part we were struggling for had a retail price of about £18, the part would actually sell for over £200 if you could find one! The stupid thing was the supplier to Vauxhall/Opel had over 400 in Stock but Vauxhall/Opel didn't want them and the supplier wasn't allowed to sell them!

There was a factory fit EFI manifold from a USA (possibly California only) alliance (renault) 1397cc engine that fits the renault 5 gt turbo engine. Part numbers available but ive never seen one available in 10 years of browsing. I know of one person who has one and I'm pretty sure he lives in OZ.

Original non locking fuel caps for a mk2 Escort go for £90. Glass washer bottles for early Minis are around £100. It’s all about supply and demand.
I sold a mate my fuel cap for £60 and still felt like I was ripping him off but he was happy at that.

500 quid for a genuine Mk1 Audi TT roof bar set??!! They were 200 new 15 years ago!
The VW/Audi scene tax rates would make your eyes water!
