Mercdans astra is a minter 😁 It certainly is , and if an RR member is interested A sensible price could be negotiated before it is advertised On classic car sites Just awaiting log book from the dvla

Base model 205s still seem very reasonable.

If you can find one, might I suggest the Nissan 100NX, same mechanicals as the previously mentioned Almera, just a bit quirkier looking.

Renault Twingo mk1, still lots about and cheap. Made from 1993 up to 2012, but who would notice that it´s not really a 90s car? Good choice, we’ve had 3. They are lhd.

Well I was gonna recommend a mk2 polo, but I've just looked at prices and fallen over. Honestly, just buy any old toot that pops up and make it cool, the fewer of them about the better. In fact it might be an idea to find cool wheels on ebay and then look for a car to bolt them on to?

I'd have to agree with the K11 Micra. I owned one as a stop gap and bought one for my partner to learn in and they're great fun for what they are. I feel that they have aged well and definitely appear to have more personality now than when they were new. Generally, they're reliable and cheap for parts. Yes, you can pick them up for silly prices (I got the one below for £50), but if you want one as a decent daily, go for the top dollar and low mileage with piles of service history. You will get a better car in the long run this way, rather than something fit for the scrap heap a year later. I also agree with the MK1 Twingo, however languages may need to be your thing to acquire a decent one. Otherwise, I can personally vouch for the MK3 Golf, if you find one without rust.

I saw this one on a Facebook group today with someone who was a potential buyer being put off by the seller being a dick. Their implication, not mine.

Mercdans astra is a minter 😁 It certainly is , and if an RR member is interested A sensible price could be negotiated before it is advertised On classic car sites Just awaiting log book from the dvla I had two of these, a 1.7TD estate and a 1.4i manual that was identical to the one pictured above. Bland at the time but they've aged well and are a fairly rare sight now. Both of mine were pretty basic but they were dependable and economical cars, so ideal as a daily.

All the young mechanics used to run around in these. They knew when they bought them that the mechanicals were robust & reliable so they wouldn't have to throw money at them in the same way that they'd have to if they bought something like a Fiesta.

Citroen Ax. Fun, nippy because they weigh as much as a teabag, cheap to run, relatively easy to modify slightly or just lob Saxo running gear on it.

As per the OP, I'd say 106. Great fun to drive, reliable (in my experience), comfy and cheap to run. Extra points as they are getting a bit scarce too but not so rare that you can't find one. Lots of options for style etc too, should you be so inclined, from the tasteful to the downright hideous.
