It has been a while since we've checked in with the wonderful world of Berg Cup, in many ways the desire to see Berg Cup cars running in the UK is what prompted the move for RR Gathering to a hillclimb, rather than the alternative circuit format we could have gone to. However in recent years we've not given it as much attention as we once did, wild stuff from Gatebil seemed to fill the bonkers fast car corners of the forum, and then there was our own UK scene burgeoning. However time has not stood still and Berg Cup is still turning out some of the most awesome cars in Europe. So perhaps it is time to revisit it and hope that once we've got through this current strange state we find ourselves in we can maybe think about planning some trips to go and see these cars in person again.
First up let's start with the perfect Berg Cup car, Armin Ebenhöh VW Scirocco. 16V of screaming VW wildness cloaked in a super cool coupe body, with all the wide aero and downforce additions that you could ever want.
As with all things motorsport, it really helps to see these things moving, and luckily for us there are loads of videos online, check out Armin's car in action from 2018
Next we've got Patrick Orth's BMW E30 320IS, running an S14 engine that will rev to 10,000rpm! We spoke to Patrick a few years back about bringing the car to the UK, but we couldn't get it together as our events always fell on the same weekend as championship rounds. He is a super nice guy with a super awesome car.
Absolutely the epitome of Berg Cup was wide body Kadett C's when we first found out about this stuff. Engines that rev to infinity and a super tough purposeful stance, with bodywork that is pushing it to the floor.

This retro hero troubles in more modern touring cars for top 10 places in competition
Mario Minichberger's BMW 2002 is insane. It is nearly all carbon fibre body panels now, with a Formula 2 engine, this is the highest point of Gruppe H (where most of the wild stuff runs) for us. Just a video of this one, but boy is it worth a video!
It isn't all just European cars with wide bodies and insane engines. Corinne Pflug campaigns this Toyota Corolla AE92, which looks relatively restrained next to the Gruppe H stuff
Also representing some Japanese hatch back goodness is Mikko Kataja and the Toyota Starlet 11k rev limit ... well actually you can just read more about it all here : www.speedhunters.com/2017/09/shooting-starlet-11000rpm-toyota-kp62/
And get close to experiencing it with some in car footage here (second half of the video)
Let's end on something else a little more out of the ordinary, because even in the awesome world of Berg Cup cars we do like something a little unusual. Manfred Schulte's Citroen AX is an unusual choice of base car, considering how much easier it would be to run a VW or similar in the championship, however when it looks, sounds and goes as well as it does you can't help but feel he has made a good choice. 250bhp, 1.6litre reving to over 9,000 rpm. What's not to love!?
Just some of the stuff that is pushing our buttons, anyone else keeping an eye on this stuff or planning to go to an event? I've been eyeing up www.facebook.com/BERGRENNENEICHENBUEHL/ ... but it looks like I'll be away (all being well), so someone else will have to go on my behalf
