So the td5 is in my rrc, and it runs, but my revcounter doesn’t work On the 300tdi engine the alternator runs it, but now it’s run through the ecu, and I’m not that clever However I do have a second alternator, with mounting that replaces the now defunct aircon pump So my question is can I run an alternator solely for the revcounter, I only have one battery, and nowhere to fit a second, and obviously I can’t just wire into the original system because it’s going to overcharge I need the original alternator the td5 because it also houses the vacuum pump for the servo Thoughts anyone? TIA

2nd alternator just to run a tacho sounds OTT So I had a google around - seems you might be able to add the W terminal to your TD5 alternator LinkyI'm no electronics whizz kid, so if the magic smoke gets out - don't blame me

Cheers moglite, that didn’t come up when I was searching, I’ll have a look at the alternator and see Not really a problem if I run 2 alternators, as I said I’ve already got all the parts! 😀

I have a feeling that with older style alternators running without a battery connected will destroy the electronics in short order. Certainly that is what I was always told.

Cant you just fit the 300tdi alternator in place of the td5?

Cant you just fit the 300tdi alternator in place of the td5? He needs the vac pump which is driven off (presumably) the rear of the Td5 alternator as per the initial post

Can’t you just get a pinout for the ECU and see which wire it is for the tach?

Can’t you just get a pinout for the ECU and see which wire it is for the tach? I know which pin it is, but a rrc and a disco 2 revcounter are different, and reading up on it you need different loads, which involve resistors and leds and recoding the ecu, which is beyond me

The alternator fitted to the 90s Isuzu engined stuff (Astra / Cavalier / Corsa / Trooper etc) has both a vac pump on the back and a W terminal for the rev counter - might be able to get one of these to do the job?

Thanks for that, matty2300, i think I’m going to try moglite suggestion first, but I may come back to that, cheers

Could you fit a td5 rev counter in your dash?

Transit Di had a vac pump and W terminal for a rev counter. No idea how the calibration works though. Seriously do you really need a rev counter? It's not like you need to shift at precisely 10,250 rpm to prevent disaster.

explain to me how running both alternators on a single battery is a problem?

dodgerover, i don't, but it’s an integral part of the instrument cluster and since I tend to watch it more than the speedo it’ll annoy me bmwmaniac, I don’t actually know if wiring two alternators into a single battery would be bad, but surely 28+ volts can’t do it any good? Edit- if I can get a td5 to 10,250rpm I’ll be running as fast as I can in the opposite direction!😱

@carat 3.6 I did think about using the td5 dash, but they’re significantly different from the rrc one, and I’m then opening up a can of worms with milos etc, and just using the revcounter alone brings up a whole new fabrication issue, number positions eyc

its still a 12v system with 2 alternators. each unit will only be doing half the amount of work, as each unit would do on its own. and as a bonus, if either of the units were to fail, you will still have a functioning charging system. you are effectively doubling the current output(if both were rated at the same amperage) and not the voltage output. the only other mod you would have to do besides the main supply, is an extra battery light. I am sure there are unused warning lights you can use for that.

I know it’s 12v, but most alternators put out around 14 in operation, and I don’t know about wiring in series or parallel, the alternators will most probably be of different amp output and cooking batteries or wiring is not something I’m prepared to risk, hence the question I think I have a spare td5 alternator in my parts stash, if I can find it amongst all the other curse word, so I’ll have a look at that one, access on the car is pretty poor, mostly done by feel Thanks all

I've just had a read through the link that Moglite posted, that seems like the simplest solution.

you don't need to fit the full cluster from a td5, just the tach component, even then you may be able to modify the original circuit to work on the td5 output.
