For the past few weeks I've been having strong cravings for a 80ies sports car. I can't get this out of my head until I've owned one, I fear. Yesterday, I actually sold my Ram because of this. Now, what I want is a car that's very 80ies, a sleek sporty coupe, RWD and manual (first time I've said that in 10 years... is this my midlife crisis?). Bonus points if it has flip up lights and even more bonus points if it has a digital dash. My budget is about 15 grand, could be maybed stretched to 20. What I've been entertaining so far: - Porsche 944 (from 1985 onwards, with the newer dash) - Toyota Supra Mk3 - Corvette C4 - Nissan 300ZX - BMW 635CSi - BMW 8-series (although it's more 90ies) Out of those I've driven a 635 and an 850 before and have sat in a Supra. All three are cars I can sit in pretty well. I am a bit concerned about the steering wheel position on the 944 as it's supposedly very low, but I reckon that could be fixed with a smaller wheel. On the Corvette I'm concerned about the available space and getting in and out of it. I'm a bit on the bigger side and have never seen a C4 from up close. Not terribly concerned with insurance and taxes as I'll be registering the car on historic tags (possibly in Germany after the car reaches 30 years of age) which will mean very cheap insurance and tax. What's your input on this, RR? Out of those, which would you choose? Or would you choose something else entirely? I'm open for suggestions. The car does not necessarily have to be available here in Germany, I am open to the possibility of importing one from the Uk or even Japan or the US, if the total price including import fits into my budget. (For an import from the US or Japan, you'd have to add roughly 40% of the buying price until it's landed in Germany with import taxes and such)

If i could choose it would be an RX7 FB, i just think they are really cool and good looking. would love to rev that little engine!
If i had to choose from the list it would be the BMW 8 series, for some reason i feel like its touching supercar territory.

FC RX7 for me But if it’s on the list only, either BMW would be my choice although I would fear the running costs of the 8 series!

I'd give another vote to the Station. Or, as a bit of a curveball - 3rd generation Pontiac Trans Am. Just don't get a bloody Knight Rider replica.

I haven't driven any of the cars on your list but I rather like the look of the BMW 635CSi. A dealer tried to sell me one almost twenty years ago and if I hadn't been looking for a big station wagon at the time I would have been very tempted.

Maybe an S12 or S13 Nissan 200sx, if you can find one that hasn't been trashed by the drift crowd.

If no one else can help... and if you can find one... maybe you can buy... A Subaru SVX Or a (Renault) Alpine? Or not too sporty but über-cool - Volvo 700 series Bertone Coupé? Just thinking of lesser-known choices

As a MK3 Supra owner, I cast my vote! Once you've ironed out the common troubles - rust and headgasket - they're good reliable coupe's. I've taken mine all over the country. They are brilliant GT cars and best suited to cruising. In stock form they don't appreciate being thrown around. I imagine £15K would buy an amazing MK3. Mine have cost considerably less. The difference between NA and Turbo is about 30hp. At your budget they'll probably all be Turbo. Some JDM imports have the 1JZ engine. Produces about the same HP as the 7M-GTE. If going down the modified route there's pros and cons for both. I have a lot of MK3 love but if I was given £20K I'd opt for a MK4. Obviously it's not 80's, there's no pop ups or fantastic interiors but it's a world apart in terms of driving. I've owned lots of 300ZX's. My own opinion would be the Supra out performs the Z31. They hold their value better too. If importing from the US though you can get some amazing retro colour combos. Some of Nissan's interiors are just...WOW! Years ago I owned an 850i. It was a very good car and felt special. Parts were a problem. Never driven a C4 but I fit inside one and am not that small! I think I'd go Opel Manta with stickers down the side for an 80's experience. Or Audi Quattro but obviously not RWD and 20 grand probably doesn't buy one anymore!

A TVR Tasmin screams 80s and should be a lot less than your budget Or spend your budget building a White Elephant replica Can’t get much more 80s than that

Thanks so much for all your suggestions people! I had the chance to drive a 944 yesterday and it's amazing. It's very much at the top of my list right now. I didn't think I'd fit into the car so well. Reply to both of those: I'm not all that big on the styling of the FB, the FC is a beautiful car. I'm not sure that I like Wankel engines, though. But definitely worth a try! I found a pretty clean white FC that's only an hour away, I might go look at it! Starion if you could find one. Bloke near me has one for a daily driver and it looks good Starion is the one I always, always forget! But it's a cool car. I'd want a wide one, if possible. Had a look through various sites and found only 3 for sale in total in Germany, narrow ones at that. Might have to try looking in other countries. But I've seen they've got a digi dash which is cool! I'd give another vote to the Station. Or, as a bit of a curveball - 3rd generation Pontiac Trans Am. Just don't get a bloody Knight Rider replica. That's very likely one that would have to be imported. It's like 99% of Trans Ams here are automatics, but it's a good tip! I forgot about those! Maybe an S12 or S13 Nissan 200sx, if you can find one that hasn't been trashed by the drift crowd. I find the 200SX to be a tough one. I do kinda like it, but as you said finding a clean one would be hard and you'd still immediately get lumped in with mad tyte JDM drift skidzzzz crowd. Not sure I want that. If no one else can help... and if you can find one... maybe you can buy... A Subaru SVX Or a (Renault) Alpine? Or not too sporty but über-cool - Volvo 700 series Bertone Coupé? Just thinking of lesser-known choices The SVX is a bit too 90ies for what I want, I think. The Alpine would be RAD!!! I've had a look and it seems there's a few in my budget. I'm a bit concerned about parts availability on these, though. The Volvo is cool, but I don't think it's what I want. As a MK3 Supra owner, I cast my vote! Once you've ironed out the common troubles - rust and headgasket - they're good reliable coupe's. I've taken mine all over the country. They are brilliant GT cars and best suited to cruising. I think I'd go Opel Manta with stickers down the side for an 80's experience. Or Audi Quattro but obviously not RWD and 20 grand probably doesn't buy one anymore! That's some good insight there! I've actually sat in both a Mk3 and Mk4 Supra and have to honestly say while the Mk3 fits me perfectly, the Mk4 feels like trying to pull on a shirt three sizes too small. It felt very tight and cramped. A TVR Tasmin screams 80s and should be a lot less than your budget Or spend your budget building a White Elephant replica Can’t get much more 80s than that I don't think I've heard of those before! Looks cool and very 80ies, though. I'll investigate, hah. You could go all James Bond . . . The Lotus is an amazing looking car, the classic wedge shape. I'd be concerned about fitting in one, though. Plus I had a look and they're out of my budget, at least here in Germany. They start at 30 grand here. If they're cheaper in the UK I might try and find one to test drive and if it fits I could potentially import one. Here's my 4 pennies worth, Oh trust me, if I had the money for a Pantera or a M1 we wouldn't even be talking about possible choices haha

If it's something you want to use frequently I would go 944. You can get a 3.0 S2 or a Turbo within budget. I've had an FC3S, which I also adored, but there's just something about the 944 driving experience, even in the least powerful versions.

Of your suggestions I'd go for an 8 series, they seem to be picking up in value as well. Otherwise a TVR wedge would be good but maybe not as a daily.
