I'm toying with the idea of getting an old pickup. However, apart from watching Clarkson attempting to kill an old Toyota, I know nothing about them!
My budget is about £1500. So are there any particular models to look for or avoid? What is insurance like? Other running costs (obviously some fuel will be used..)? Single or double cab? I don't really need a big load bay but the aesthetics of the single or king cabs are more appealing. So what compromises do you make so that it's easier to live with?
Your thoughts gentlemen, please...

I've had a few... And if all goes according to plan this will become mine early next year! The thing is, what do you want it for? If you want something that feels more of a car, buy more of a ute, like the Caddy, Felicia, and Jumbuck. If you want something that feels more of a pick up, then buy any of the others that have a separate chassis, cab, and bed. And if you want something that is truly agricultural, then buy a Tata! Of my fifteen pick ups the best one was probably the Ranger, although the Dodge was good too, and despite what you might think, it wasn't too big to drive over here, and wasn't overly thirsty. My favourite of the pick ups was probably the Chevrolet, it wasn't the best one, but I liked it the most, even when I abused it by putting petrol in it (It was a diesel) I just topped it up with diesel and carried on driving it. It never let me down. Now that I think about it I never had any trouble with any of the pick ups I've owned, and most of them had over 200,000 miles on them. Really, the only advise I can give you is if you want a pick up, just go out and buy one. It's really the only way you'll really know if a pick up will suit you.

Some very valid points made by Mr Popper. You also need to consider whether you need 4x4 or not as many of the non car based pickups have versions of them. Although I have owned many coming from a country where pickups are often the main family runabout, do you really need all the extra bits and bobs of a 4x4 or not? Personally a 2wd is nice from a modding perspective as its less complicated and usually a bit easier to lower if that's your thing.

Personally and from experience; the old Hilux 4x4 diesel is a great truck. They are sloooow 2x but they keep going. The Rodeo TF model, maybe they call it Isuzu in your neck of the woods not sure but the Holden Rodeo TF was one of my best utes. Great 4WD good on fuel. The turbo diesel was super reliable. The Hilux was sold with about 450.000km on the clock and the Rodeo with about 300.000km.

It's more for fun than anything else! I like the idea of easily chucking my bike in the back without it snagging on carpet and trim like it does in estates or people carriers.
After reading the 'you like pickups' thread I think I'm going to be looking at a crew cab 4x4 if I can find a decent cheap one! It might be easier selling the idea to the mrs if I tell her I can rescue from work if she gets snowed in!
Do insurance companies like them?

oh yeah, insurance companies love them! I used to have to pay over £1200 for mine. I couldn't understand why I was paying more than four times the amount on my Ranger as I was paying on my Mustang. So in the end I asked my insurance company why it was costing me so much. The reason apparently was because statistically pick ups are at the top of the tree for being stolen, and never recovered. By all accounts they reckon that most get stolen and shipped to the middle east. I don't know how true that is but what I can tell you is that I have sold a couple of mine to people who were exporting them to the middle east. Having said all that I have managed to get them insured cheaper by shopping around, but it takes a long time, and sometimes I feel i'm just jumping through hoops to the amusement of the insurance agent.

I have a mk3 Hilux single cab. It's slow, not very comfortable, noisy and I love it. Mk4 models are a bit cheaper and have independent front suspension and a turbo, so a bit nicer to live with. They are quite agricultural still. I pay about £350 for insurance on a classic policy (it's a 1991 truck).

Have a picture or two. It's a constant battle keeping it red, I had forgotten how red paint used to go pink then almost white.... Great for taking pallets home from work for projects....

Looked for one for quite a while before buying the Blazer that’s technically not a truck, but described as one. Loads of info above so far, any decision yet?

I always have to chip in on a pick up thread! I have owned my Chevy S10 for nearly 3 years. It's a daily driver and my only car. It is perfect! The world's most comfortable seats,a great size and it eats the miles. It's easy to park and super practical. I have the 4.3 V6 on LPG but there are other options such as 2.2. Check out my thread on here if you are interested.

I have a Felicia Fun and love it (without the teddy bear wheels as above). Quite fancy a Chevrolet Colorado (dual cab, 3t towing weight but not the size of a small house) but for cool factor a Subaru Baja.
