It is a sad fact of life that some cool cars are owned by utter sods, to put it politely.
Have said it before but the best aspect of this forum is the lack of snobbery you get on other places. One minute you can be looking at some period-modded Beetles, the next a stripped out trackday racer and finally a Proton MPi with deep dish wheels and a turbo shoved on. It's really just a great big place to appreciate cool cars!
Not like a lot of other places, where you'd be shamed for having the wrong make/model/trim spec/condition/modified/unmodified/cheap/too old/too new etc etc. Why do people limit themselves like that?

I've found the Retro Rides scene pretty much anything goes and it's open minded unlike other scenes which are snobby. There will always be someone out there who doesn't like your car, I get it every day at work.
I say name and shame!

I used to spend a lot of time on a certain forum where if you don't own, let's say, a black model A Ford with red wire wheels, cross ply tyres and a flathead V8 - modified in the style of Southern California between 1948 - 52 you're classed as bottom feeding pond scum. Now I'm regular on here I find my eyes constantly opening to cool stuff I wouldn't look twice at before. If people are that narrow minded then f*ck 'em I say. Who was it then James? Dish the dirt.
(Your car's curse word by the way!) ;D ;D

Narrow mindedness is the biggest problem in classic car circles. People get so caught up in the magic of their own car that they slag off anything else without even considering it. You do get some snobs within a particular scene but thankfully, they tend to be rarer. Not had a problem in the Retro scene although some folk can get a bit heavy handed if someone demonstrates a lack of knowledge....
Thankfully, that seems rare too.

i find that in the old skool ford scene, mk1 fez's are blatently old skool fords, but because they are RWD not many old skoolers like em, just think they are curse word FWD cars, and there older than a lot of the cappers in the scene, especially mk3s

What winds me up is the attitude of some restorers to owners of modified versions of their cars. It usually goes something like this: Buffer - "what a shame" Modder - "well it was too rough to restore. All the good bits were used on a restoration and it was on its way to the scrapyard so I decided to do this instead" Buffer - "I'd rather see it scrapped than ruined with a V8 and alloy wheels" Modder - "well its my car and I enjoy it. Plenty of other people like it as well. Any way, once you've seen one standard car you've seen the lot".

Its them with the problem not you/us Too many people in life feel as though they have to conform to group stereotypes and even though they feel 'altenative' they are just following the others! I say do what you like how you like and when you like and if someone feels the need to slag you off feel happy inside that they have nothing better to occupy their minds!

My mate had a confontation at a mini show(stanford hall) with his RSP mini cooper, big fella who runs the RSP register or something starts having a go at him for changing to later more comfortable seats and that the wheels are wrong because the RSP alloys have the bolt holes line up with the spokes and on the later ones they moved them round on the casting(yawn, yawn).Getting right arsey for messing around with motoring history

to be honest, I haven't come across too many anti-modified restorer types, you used to get that years ago, but not so much now I think, plus that I'd call puritanism rather than snobbishness.
What I'd call snobishness was when in ord circles you used to get the people who thought the only Cortinas worth having were the Mk1/Mk2. And said that the Mk3/4/5 were only good for banger racing and the like. The arguement was "well, they never bothered makig a Lotus version, did they!" and such. That was 10 years ago or more and now the Sierra lovers will be having the same curse word.
Ditto the "well you cars not rat/hood/lo-lo/pro-touring" (or whatever the fad of the day is) ergo it must be curse word. I've been evangelising 70s style customs since the 1980s occasionally encountering anything from dismisal and ridicule to open hostility for it, slowly 70s style is coming back, hooray.

I really cannot stand snobbery / blinkeredness. One-marque clubs seem to breed it more than anything, particularly if it's full of "purists".
That said, I find the aircooled Dub scene can be snobby. A lot of my mates are dubbers, and don't get me wrong I've had some great times partying with the A/C people, but there's some serious snobbery going on. Same goes for Hoodride. It's tied in closely with the Dub scene and thus is full of fashion dubbers and scenesters who think anything with water running through its engine is curse word.
That sounds like I dislike Vee-dubbers - I don't. As I said I know a lot of Dubbers and they're really good mates!
Retro-Rides is the only place I visit, purely becuase of the diversity and openness of the place. Leave your blinkers at the door and pull up a chair... ;D

a while back a guy brought a very nice cobra rep in for test ,a proper shiney "never been given any stick" type of car, loads of shiney bits and definitely a cheque book car .anyway he starts banging on about how quick it is so i ask him wehter he does track days etc ."oh no i just take it to the odd show" "whats the point in having it then? he looks at me like ive just curse word on his shoes ;D "it it a pilgrim then "i say knowing full well its a jag based dax i had some tutting on a reliant forum for cutting the roof off a regal but if it werent for the purists a lot of valuable parts would get lost as these same people do help keep the rarer cars going by getting parts re made.

I have to say that This is the best Forum IMO the mix of cars and people is great. But I also know what you mean about snobbery when I owned a BMW 325I Sport which was slightly modified . I went to the local BMW drivers meet wow what a bunch of uptight snobby people . One guy came over and took one look at my car said I had ruined it then nobody else even spoke to me. So I thought f**k em and smoked the tires up in the pub car park and left never to return LOL ;D PS i think you Cherry pretty cool mate

Haven't had too many cases of bing nice about someone's car and getting derogatory comments back about any of mine but I do seem to cop a lot of flack about driving Vauxhalls, usually always from the owners of a certain other make (and usually one particular model) of car. I won' t say what make/model this is because a) I don't want to ge to the point of tarnishing all owners of them te same and b) they're very popular cars on here and I don't fancy getting my head kicked in at a show one day Seriously though i anyone ever slates any of my cars (Vauxhalls, Merc or owt else I won) they get it back ten times worse and always will. There is just no need for it at all, I even say 'nice car mate' to owners of cars that I cannot stand if it's a nice example.

I know the guy, hes alright really just has a real thing for RSP's His 850cc mk1 is pretty cool. Only period mods, and NO cooper parts. Please excuse my lack of minis, but RSP? What's that stand for then? So far the Volvo hasn't attracted many purists. A few people on the VOC got uppity when I said I was searching for some Torq Thrusts, I got the 'powdercoat the steels or get some minilites' line, 'because they look the best'. Don't get me wrong I like the VOC, apart from when they put photo competitions on and no one else gets a bollocking for the contents of their EXIF data apart from me. If they'd checked, it wasn't the Type 2s I was after, but the Type Ds. Not bling. The 10 was the car I got a lot of flack from from duffers. For every one person who'd never seen one before and was just glad to see it puttering about, there were 87,000 other miserable sods with Morris Minors who couldn't understand 'why I'd want a French car'. I was met with similar disdain at a lot of autojumbles ('If you want French parts, go to France'.) No doubt someone will rip into me when I finally get the TTs on it (the last owner of the Amazon was terrified I was a hot rodder of some kind ). I just don't think the Amazon is that kind of car \ has that kind of particular anal \ obsessive fan faction that BMC products have. I also struggle to see the merit in polishing a Mk 3 Golf several times a day, but each to their own.

Oh, another one I forgot about. At Cholomondeley show last year (I think) and had a good chat with a cracking fella who'd modified his Morris Minro and a damned good job he'd made of it too. Iirc it had a smoothed boot, a well cool grille (sharkteeth style), moondiscs and a few other things too. He said other Minor owners told him point blank he'd wrecked his car and they thought it looked curse word (or something along those lines). We had good laugh about the stupid snobbery of it all and discussed how a car as common as the Minor could be deemed so precious it was sacriledge.
