My mate (same one who has had a kit car he sold 8 years ago sat on his drive since) one built a bentley special. He made the body completely from scratch in fibreglass and it was absolutely stunning. Anyway he took it to a bentley owners club meeting and they said it was curse word as it wasnt a real coachbuilt special etc and it defientley wasn't allowed in as it was fibreglass. My mate then pointed out that of the 20 cars in attendance 7 of them were wearing fibreglass wings he'd made, and 1 of them had only got the headlights off a bentley on him. They then asked him to come in but he told em to curse word off.

Yeah I reckon the cravat brigade were treating the whole thing like a golf club (it can further your career don't you know?) Bear in mind that this was the mid-late '80's so these may well have been the speculator types. In which case, I hope they lost loads of money when the stock market crashed! People like that priced classics out of the reach of the enthusiast.

that how you tell a "car guy" from a guy who thought "I have ahuge day trader's bonus to blow on something expensive to impress my firends, I know, I'll buy a classic car" Spot on imho. Most Aston/Ferrari/etc drivers I've talked to have been great. One regulary parks in the shops car park near me (council estate) and always takes time out to chat about cars and lets the local kids sit in his Ferrari. How many of the poncey 'put others down to make themselves feel big' brigade would do that?

I bought my Rover off a restorer (sound bloke) Anyway, he was chuffed when I eventually got my car on the road and got me to park next to him at a Classic show, as for years he had been getting grief from the RSR (Rover Sports Register) for painting his car the wrong shade of green. Of course with mine parked next to his it did somewhat take the purists attention away.
"Sacrilege" was heard several times, before their flat caps were thrown down in disgust.
I just giggled quietly.

Why would you expect to "Make money out of" a car? Swmbo's mother thinks like that unfortunately and can't understand why I might want to spend money on my car if it's not worth that much. Well actually across ownership it has cost me less than the depreciation in their Vauxhall plus the insurance is less and the tax is free. And I get to drive a scary old boneshaker every day rather than a bland box of powered sound deadening.

It's amazing how many people think you should make money on a classic, yet they happily go out and buy a new car and get raped with the depreciation. Bizarre.
I haven't come across any snobbery directly. There are people who just don't get my car, which is fine. That's about it really.

The same thing that creates snobbery amongst classic/retro owners is probably the same thing that creates snobbery amongst owners of run of the mill stuff - they feel that by purchasing a particular type of car that they have bought into the lifestyle/status connotations that go with it, or maybe that they`ve just been one smart old cookie for making that choice of car, therefore they have to distance themselves -by making erroneous comments- from any supposedly inferior cars that other people have so foolishly invested their money in. Or got for nothing. Or been paid to remove from a driveway.
This is all to justify the extra money they have spent and to allay the nagging suspicion that perhaps they have`nt made the best choice afterall.
These people simply need to be told to f*ck off about fifty times a day, that`s all.

I came across a lot of this a few years back with the Sprintfire, mostly from a certain club catering for 6cyl small chassis Triumphs.
B*LL*CKS to 'em I say.
It's my car and I'll do what I want to it!
Christ, it's not like there's a national shortage of Triumphs ( or most other cars come to that) in standard spec.
At least I use/abuse my cars, and not keep it 24/7 in a garage sleeping with it or knocking one out!
Wait till they see what I do to the Vitesse and possibly a 2000.
I've already had several people say they never expected a Herald to make a noise like that!
If they want all the cars to be as factory then they should but 'em themselves.
These days tho', most comments are complementary.

I haven't come across any snobbery directly. There are people who just don't get my car, which is fine. That's about it really. I used to go out with a girl who although she said she liked cars, only really liked 'status symbols'. I had a top of the range Cavalier at the time as a company car, but I also had a 1980 Turbo Trans Am for fun and she couldn't figure out why I'd want an tacky old American car when I had a perfectly good modern car. (To be fair, it did break down a lot!!! ) She actually hated that car, but for no rational reason. I mean I could've appreciated if she just didn't like it, but I swear she shook any time she saw it or I spoke of it. Maybe it was because it didn't have a radio? I didn't see the point in fitting one 'cos I never tired of listening to the engine!! For the record she drove a, (modern at the time!), Metro that I'm sure she lost an absolute fortune on at the end of the day. I've said it once and I'll say it forever more................."If I have to explain, you won't understand!"

I haven't come across any snobbery directly. There are people who just don't get my car, which is fine. That's about it really. Same for me I'm in the Tatra Register UK which is a real laugh - Tatras were cars that you couldn't even buy so they're exclusive, they're quite rare in the UK and so this could make the owners a bit likely to look down their noses. Not a bit of it, Tatra owners also have Skodas, Trabbies, a fair collection of old commie bikes as well as VWs, Mercs, Porsches etc. Plus they're all quite aware of their cars' own shortcomings. It's good to be proud of your own car, but even better if you can poke fun at it too ;D
