HI. long time no post. Because no progress on my retro, mainly. But I'm hoping a new retro will get me back into the swing of updating my Celica TA22 thread. New arrival last weekend. Intended as my daily driver, having recently sold my '04 Impreza WRX and planning to offload a '56 plate Fiesta ST very soon. Love the car, it's my second 944 and an itch I had to scratch again after ownership of the last one ended with blown engines x2, no driveway of my own, and not enough money to keep it running. This one will be different... honest. So, pics. Nope, sorry, I can't upload an image in the office, it seems. Will put some in later today. All I can say is it's black, an S2, grey sport half leather, bridge spoiler, D90 rims. Imagine that for a few hours til I get home and try uploading again It's got a stainless exhaust but is otherwise completely standard. Plans? It's a daily so I'm not going mad. - hoping to lower the front on springs and the rear on the rear axle plate adjusters. - steering wheel will be changed to improve the driving position - 2DIN fitted so I have Nav as well as bluetooth and music streaming - a baby seat... The wheel choices on 944s is pretty boring. Cup wheels or Boxster wheels (twists, crab claws, 10-spokes). Or 1500 quid on decent split rims. It's on 16s which I feel are an inch too small, and the received wisdom is don't put 18s on if you want the wheel bearings to last (and I got out of the Impreza due to ride quality on its 18s, so am not ruining this one for my commute). So 17s it (probably) is. These cars respond really well to equal width fronts and rears, though, so the other possibility is a pair of rear D90 wheels on the front, and spacers on the rear to keep the tracks about the same. Then potentially use the 7Js as winters. However. Still to get a good dig into the car and sort out some niggles. It's been well cared for and is on 118k miles so am hoping it won't need too much remedial, and I just need to wash and polish and tinker with it... I hope...

And needless to say the list of mods is growing already on this daily driver that I bought in standard nick with the intent of keeping standard...
For now it’s little jobs to get it tidied up a bit where worn and tired. But there will be changes. Oh yes, there will be changes.

Thanks.
Have to say it’s a cracker. Seriously good nick. But still needing some love. So, a list: Heater is only blowing hot. A bush and clip to sort. I hope. Blower is only working on speed 4. Clean up the ballast resistor. I hope. Wipers are borked. 60 quids worth of PIAA silicone wipers will be fitted and on test shortly! While I’m at it, repaint wipers arms and check the wiper linkages for wear. Glovebox door check arms broken. Replacements on their way. Nose badge tired. But I like the patina so it’s staying but with a new backing grommet, which arrived today. Sun visor clips falling to bits. Replacements have arrived. Window motors are slow and need cleaning and degreasing. Steering wheel stitching has had it. So I’m replacing rather than repairing, but am testing a few dish depths over the next few weeks before plumping for a wheel.
There’s 200 quid gone and it’s just fixing everyday stuff. Welcome to Porsche ownership...
Torn at the moment whether to go clear front and side indicators, or keep the orange. If going clear I wanted to fit LED daytime lights and a relay to cut one side when the amber LED indicator came on. But it might just be too much work!
Wheels are decided. But the aim is to make a decent retromod in time for the Gathering and make an impact on arrival so i’m keeping that under my hat for now 😎

Get one. The best you can. They’re an awesome all rounder and if I recall correctly you have a mini jonomisfit - they’re great for getting baby kit into the back of 😝 The orange thing is old history. A spaceframed mid-engined bike-engined road and track car, conceived before Radical got their SR3 launched but arriving on the market a year too late. Few pics here. rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10585&sid=03dca19cd8c8c12fdfacb9f4a629102fIt was my project after this one and the next one and the next one. But keeps getting put to the back of the queue so am thinking of selling it on ☹️

Boring update alert. But in my defence, I need this to be good as a daily first and foremost. Heater is only blowing hot. Useful in this cool weather we are having? No not so much. Broken linkage bush. New bush. Retaining clip. Fitted. I haz heat AND cool. Steering wheel with sad stitching and too long a reach for me. Scruffiest deep dish wheel ever seen, on a short boss. Sadly no further rearward than the OE one... A spacer is now on its way. Told you it was boring...

The tedium deepens. A renovated cigar lighter cap. If you’re still reading and still interested, you poor poor sod. But anyway it was done by soaking in wd40 for 2 days. Got all the ingrained yellow nicotine out very easily. Today I’m removing the centre console, so I can trim it to fit a 2DIN. More excitement later.

Far from it. It's good to see a 944 come up on these pages. I've owned a couple. Here are my two. It may give some perspective on how you want to go. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/62604/1989-porsche-944-another-heartforum.retro-rides.org/thread/147739/1991-porsche-944-turbo-homeOut of the two I really really wish I kept the 944 Turbo. I to this day still question my motives for getting rid, but I do know more now than I did then. I can help with a few bits though. For the steering wheel you may have compromised your leg room beneath the steering wheel. The factory wheels are actually offset on the steering boss. For Momo bosses at least you can obtain a offset adaptor so that the wheel is correctly offset again as per the factory wheel. Of course, it's it OK, don't worry about it . To me the look depends on the lights. I personally like how the orange breaks up the amber, but most lenses are getting on a bit as you can tell from my post. Also, the gaskets may well be shot on your existing indicators, meaning that your indicators can go. Cleaning the contacts up will provided a temporary solution while a new indicator unit is IMHO the best solution, but they aren't cheap. It used to happen all of the time on my Turbo due to the gaskets being shot, and I tried sanding the terminals, putting Vaseline on the connections to prevent them from rusting again and so on... The clears when I bought them came with new gaskets. I questioned their effectiveness but it is something you can monitor anyway by looking for condensation in the lights etc. Another thing to bear in mind is that the Boxster/Carrera 2 Twist wheels are one of the lightest wheels made by Porsche. I never really minded the looks so they were fine for me. They did work on my S2 I felt due to the 968 mirrors. The Cup1s in Shadow Chrome were the ticket on my Turbo however. I'd have only sold them for a set of Fuchs replicas or Turbo S ClubSport wheels, albeit most of the latter are now unusable. If you go to 17s I'd seriously recommend getting your castor mounts changed to 968 items; they far less rubber in them. Porsche even did a technical bulletin advising to change them if a 944 had 17s fitted. From having my S2 on stock mounts but then changing them and driving an uber low mileage S2 Cab (as in 30k on the clock), I can say there is a marked difference; The car's steering is less wayward and the car less nervous over white lines etc. The Cab owner has that issue. Despite a few of us letting him know about the Porsche bulletin he's still on the factory mounts due to 'originality'. He's changed the steering rack, and done various geo changes, yet still has the same issue! Talk about throwing money at a car when there is a cheaper solution. In this case around £90-170 from Hartech or Design 911 depending on quality and around 30 minutes to fit both sides. www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod7057/Wishbone-Front-Rubber-Mounting-Porsche-944-968-95134102301/

Sorry it's taken a while but 2 kids is preventing me from replying much! Teething and potty training at the same time. Yawn... Anyway ChasR many many thanks for that info. Really useful, especially about the offset steering wheel. I've now got an offset spacer and it's moved the deep dish wheel to pretty much where I want it - I think. Test drive tomorrow to make sure. I'm in the Fiesta on nursery duty today. I vaguely knew about the caster bushes from a 968 but it wasn't near the top of my list - it now is. It tramlines quite badly and that's on the 16s so I think it'll help that a lot. Originality can go stuff itself, to my mind, if it means the car is better. Not sure how that flies with all these collectors and investors in the classic market at the moment, but I'm not planning to sell it anytime soon, so... So, aside from my new steering wheel position at the weekend, I: - tried an 8J Design 90 wheel on the front. It looks quite good, but I'm holding off any decisions until the ride height is right and the suspension alignment is done. Would need a 20mm spacer on the rear I think. - got most of the way to fitting my 2DIN head unit, now just waiting for an amplifier to arrive - pics once it's in - relocated an immobiliser touch point, which had been drilled into the switch panel under the radio. Pet hate of mine, so moved to be less visible in another panel that's also already been drilled for an alarm LED. - checked it out underneath to find that everything looks very good with the exception of the power steering pump, which I kind of expected as the belt is overtightened (suspect because the pump leaks were contaminating the pulley and it was slipping) and the pump is soaked in oil. So a new seal kit for that is ordered. When the undertray comes off to sort that, I'll check the oil cooler and refurb that too if it's in any way suspect. I hear the air-to-oil cooler from the Turbo is a sensible upgrade if in any doubt, too. - took delivery of new wiper linkages, so that's next weekend's job as the current wipers are dire: check the motor, replace the linkages, paint the wiper arms, fit the new blades, sort the ballast resistor to give me my 4 fan speeds again. Hoping it doesn't need new wiper arms to repair the wiper performance. This week in the work car park, the aim is to: - finish preparing the 2DIN opening - wire in the amplifier - fit the head unit and bask in the glory of integrated Nav and MP3 music looking good in a 30 year old design :-D - decide whether I need a short shifter or if just replacing some wearing parts is good enough - I think the shifter will be a bit of a reach in 1st and 3rd, so a short shift might just bring it back to being comfortable - get the ECU code to order an ECU chip upgrade - get lithium grease on the door / bonnet / tailgate linkages and off the surrounding paintwork Think that'll do me...

And a shameless pic of my old 944 2.5 8v at Brands in 2004. Probably about 10 minutes before it spun a bearing and got recovered / ebayed / mourned.

And a shameless pic of my old 944 2.5 8v at Brands in 2004. Probably about 10 minutes before it spun a bearing and got recovered / ebayed / mourned. Nice! That looks awesome! Are you Grypton on another forum? You're much closer to me than you think. Regarding the shifter, I'd refurbish what you have, or get the Only944 shifter kit for a more long last solution over the factory item; the factory one will always wear due to metal coming into contact with metal. The Only 944 kit has bearings to take the load instead and really improves things. Changing the rear rods and the gearbox shifter bush also massively helps things if they are original; they are a pain to change at the rear however without the 'box being out.

Cheers, the 8v was a nice car but hadn't been too well looked after when I bought it. Then I put 26k miles on it in 6 months... it was good but not great and didn't get much better in my ownership.
Kept up with traffic very well; everyone wanted to race a Porsche and no-one wanted to move over for it on the M6... These days it would be considered slow, and to be honest the S2 isn't quick by modern standards either.
Anyway I've just been on to Only944 and that was expensive :-( New shift lever and quick shift at the gearbox end, plus a new link rod and tail light seals (they've been gunked up at some time) should be on their way tomorrow :-D
Chas: nope I'm not Grypton. I've been jamesie on most forums, I think. Where are you?
