In my continuing quest to not fall behind with photos and show reports this year, probably my least late homework ever! This was last weekend. Just sayin' Anyway, I'd never heard of it but this is the first year I've had a working VW so whatever. Apparently now in it's gazillionth year, this is a nice informal little show run by the London and Thames Valley VW Club at a great venue, Easthampstead Park near Bracknell. It's like some bizarre stately home in a estate parkland and formal gardens... definitely not the sort of place you'd expect a horde of scruffy Volkswagenista to naturally inhabit, but it certainly made a lovely change from the post-apocalyptic wasteland of t'Pod. Genuinely one of the nicest settings I've ever been to a car show in Another bonus was that it was near(ish)... not that I had any idea where Bracknell is - or even what Bracknell is - but the map thing showed it to be fairly nearby. Just as well, with a 1200 Beetle you're not getting anywhere fast. So I set out a lot less early than normal, set of to meet up with Ada and Lewis in the general vicinity of Guildford. Adam had got up stupidly early to find somewhere to clean his car. I... didn't However, stopping by a handy bush full of flowers for a photo she didn't seem to be too grimy. Dolly and flowers by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Once Lewis and family rolled up we set off in the slowest convoy ever and it wasn't long before we arrived at the park. Straight in without queuing, nice people on the gate, local Scout group roped in to help with parking and marshaling, goodie bag on entrance, very civilised. Park up the MWVW massive in an appropriate bit of field. Done MWVW by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Yeah, we suck at parking and they should be in red-white-blue order really. Never mind, we'll get the hang of it MWVW courtesy Ada by Nick Liassides, on Flickr So, what to do now? Basically just wander about and look at cars. Is it that kind of show? Well, yes, and no. The setting, as I mentioned, is pretty stunning House by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Gardens by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle White 65 sacked by House by Nick Liassides, on Flickr In addition, there is a genuinely massive barbeque production line going on, with genuine charcoal-grilled meat wafting deliciously-fragranced smoke across the crowds. Lunch by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Four of those ^ in a line, Yummy. There's a kids area with face painting and bouncy castles. There are two bandstands, one like some English lawn party from an Austen novel with wicker chairs laid in a semicircle on manicured turf. One's a proper stage with electric instruments and lights and microphones all that new fangled stuff. What a place. Very convivial. And in addition to all that, and rather weirdly, there are stormtroopers Stormtroopers assemble by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Nope, really. Stormtroopers. See? Apparently this is part of the 501st Division, who basically dress up in costumes and hang around places for money. Now, try that round Kings Cross and you're likely to get a fascinating array of STDs and a few quid for services rendered, but this is a different kind of dressing up and selling yourself. And I have to say, the outfits are truly amazing and to my eyes anyway, as good as the real thing. Although I find the lack of height restrictions to apply to the Speeder Bike Corps slightly disturbing Short for a speeder pilot by Nick Liassides, on Flickr I dunno if they really brought anything much to the proceedings other than the oddity of mooching about looking at cool cars and then you suddenly realise Darth Vader's standing next to you. Which is, undeniably, odd and not something that happens every day. Another oddity is that the autocorrect wants "stormtroopers" to become "spectrometers" Right, I'm off for a crafty fag. When I get back we'll look at some cars, yeah?

Seems not that long ago that buses were the forgotten part of car culture. Other than the cognoscenti, those long-suffering hardcore who'd been immersed in that scene forever, no-one cared. Now it's got to the point where nut and bolt restos are going for 200 000 dollah at Barrett-Jackson and people are willing to drag two halves of a barndoor out of a Swedish morass and spend years rebuilding them from two dustpans of rust and a couple of lacework panels. With that in mind, some of these beauties are probably among the more valuable vehicles in Berkshire on this particular day! Especially in RHD. And since we mentioned the third most famous VW originator, Brazil, how about some import strangeness? A Brasilia Variant, featuring Type 3 rear hauling space and slightly upsetting 412/SP2 front end. Yours for under 7k, which seems good value for such an unusual thing Variant Brasilia by Nick Liassides, on Flickr And while we're on about Variants... Well, why not have an estate car that features and engine clogging up half the load space? Just lift things a bit higher to clear the tailgate. Honestly, some people want everything Variant beige 67 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr In fact, while we're at it, let's round up all the oddities shall we? The Notchback was the first family car to come from VW that wasn't a Beetle, and it took long enough to convince Herr Nordhoff that it was a Good Thing. Sales never really challenged the Beetle output, but looking at a clean one now it's hard to understand why. Maybe it just looked too "normal" and modern Notchback white 63 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Notchback white 63 d by Nick Liassides, on Flickr For me, I prefer the fastback style. I remember one of these living in the next street over when I was a kid, and thinking it looked fearsomely fast and modern. Like (whisper it) a Porsche almost. Now it really doesn't, of course. But it does look great Fastback 70 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Fastback 70 d by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Fastback 70 r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr And on the subject of things that look like Porsches... 356 Speedster by Nick Liassides, on Flickr As I often bang on about, Speedsters and 356s in general are like Cobras and GT40s; when you see one you automatically assume "replica". Does it matter? Probably not. In amongst all the Star Wars characters you see a pair of fellas in jumpsuits and walking wellies. No-one knows who the hell they're pretending to be. Until some long-buried memory clicked with something deep in the neural mroass of my memory and I remembered a curse word BBC TV series we used to have to watch... because there were only three channels on the telly... and a strange Galactic Federation run by a butch woman with a crew cut long before Weepy Sinead made it acceptable. "Blake's 7!" I blurted out before my brain had even let my mouth know anything significant was on the way. Bless them, you've never seen anyone sooooooo pleased to be recognised. And now I feel old. My Uncle had a Scirocco. This was at a time when we still had a 1300 Beetle and my grandad had a brown MkI Escort. The 'rocco looked like a spaceship come to dwell amongst us primitive creatures. Honestly, it was the equivalent of the monolith nestling among the monkeymen at the start of 2001: A Space Odyssey! They still look great. Even held together by what looks like bathroom caulking Scirocco white 92 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Scirocco 92 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Scirocco 92 scabs by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Scirocco 90 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr My mum had a breadvan Polo, too. I got to use it for a fortnight as reward for driving her to the airport for a holiday. I might not have been so chuffed had I known in advance that there was a Tina Turner greatest hits (if that ain't an oxymoron) jammed in the cassette player on auto-reverse and you couldn't turn the sodding thing off! I ended up taking out the tape player to find she'd wedged it in on top of the playing cradle with another tape already in it somehow, and bent it so badly I couldn't get the first cassette out at all (Becos woman... if it doesn't fit, MAKE IT FIT). So I managed to swap Tina for an endless loop of whalesong music. This was the Eighties and such things were supposed to make you calm and beatific. It didn't make me *&%$!@ing very calm after two solid weeks of the damned thing, I was willing to sponsor the entire Japanese and Norwegian whaling fleets combined. Wipe them all out, the smug tootling finny bastards! *ahem* Anyway, my mum's Polo was nowhere near as groovy as this one Polo breadvan 87 by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Polo breadvan 87 louvres by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Interlude for bonus Princess Leia in disguise as bounty hunter Boushh Leia Boushh by Nick Liassides, on Flickr right, that's enough watercooled frippery. One ofthe prettiest cars ever designed, and no, that's not up for discussion, it just is. So, Beetles then.Since we last said "Karmann", seems a logical place to start. Funny to think that it took Wilhelm Karmann quite a while to convince the notoriously conservative head of VW, Heinz Nordhoff that the Beetle needed a drop-top version. Eventually Heinrich acquiesed to the indescribably beautiful Hebmuller version as well as the Osnabruck firm's version and whist the Wuppertal version ended tragically young in a devastating fire, the canvas-loving Beetle fraternity still had Wilhem's version and never looked back. In fact, long after the saloon Beetle had ceased to exist anywhere other than as Mexican taxis, the Karmann cabroilet soldiered on selling by the bucketload. Even into the days of the bulgy-windowed 1303 base. Strange there were only a few at Easthampstead, then. And finally, Beetles. After all, that's pretty much why I'm here. And I love them all, even ones with tiny upright headlights and prolapsed widscreens and elephant's feet. This is a pretty famous old Beetle. Mag featured, poster boi for VW Heritage, and it's easy to see why. No air, no juice, just mad static drop and serenely scraping its was through life. See other forum for my reply seriously though, it was a great day out. As much as I love going to the pod that was all about the racing for me where as this was just so chilled out and relaxing. Definitely do this again next year. Shame there wasn’t a few more stands selling parts though. Still can’t get over how unnerving Vadar was even though I was bigger than him. Couldn’t look him in the eyes properly. Did make me laugh though when I asked where all the good guys were and he said ‘I have crushed them’ in his asthmatic tones Adam
