this is the beast, the Green B****** a 1985 VW T3 or Vanagon as they are called here in Canada. It was purchased with a Chevy motor from a 1979 Citation, otherwise known as an "Iron Duke". Anyway, it had been overheated badly at least 13 times and had a rear main so bad that it leaked a gallon of oil over 2 days of driving. No exaggeration! It cost more in oil than gas to run it! I pulled the head and found the bores absolutely mirror polished and with the head failing a pressure test I decided to fit a replacement engine. These motors can only be bored .30 thou over and no replacement heads available so why not...
So I eventually found a 1991 Chevy S10 pick up 400KM away with an Iron Duke motor in an appalling 2WD truck with an absolutely shot frame and fred flintstone floors. A somewhat scary test drive and a healthy compression test later I handed over 600 Canadian Pesos for the Blue B**** and loaded it up on a U Haul trailer. Interestingly enough the trailer had just come one way from Florida... Here we are at the local gas station filling up the tow truck, the Cummins powered animal that I'd borrowed for the hauling expedition. 550Lb of torque, manual, 4WD and a straight thru exhaust, yes please!
Then to pull the motor, and wiring harness, as we're going from Carb to TBI.
Done!
Sold the manual gearbox for $200 and scrapped the rest for $100. Result!
Got the motor 'in' the bus! haha. (Also got donated a set of snows but I doubt I'll use them, these are absolutely garbage in the white stuff.)
So, we have a VW Gearbox and a Chevy motor. Let's start to marry these up. The previous owner had originally done the Citation motor swap and pressed together a Chevy flywheel centre into a Vanagon outer, leaving us with this:
I know this Flywheel did over 20k but I can't help but feel it's a little too homebrew. I've priced a one piece flywheel for $500 US... Let's see. I also need an adaptor machined up to take the pilot bearing into the centre of the flywheel or crank end, I can't remember how far the input shaft protruded on the old set up.
The previous motor used the Small Block Chevy bolt pattern and the new motor the V6 pattern, even though it is a 4 banger. A screw up on my part but I have found an adaptor that goes between a SBC pattern and a V6 pattern that I will cut and weld into this:
And that is where I'm at so far! Watch this space!

Could you have the current flywheel checked at a machine shop, it might be okay...maybe even add a couple of weld beads for peace of mind?

JP It's cold season right now so everything up here is pretty much shut down until May. Down Toronto way there are things open, I'll drop it off with a shop down there next time I'm in the area. In the meantime I have ordered this: I'll be aligning this to the 90 degree SBC pattern on my existing adaptor to cut and weld in. With no shop and temperatures around -20C it'll be slow going 'till April!

interesting, a few mates (of this very parish) have fitted MK3 golf Gti 8v engines to these.
although I'm sure I'm not alone in seeing Chevy engine and thinking small block v8

Whilst a small block v8 would fit, I didn't fancy the weight, economy or power as a good fit. I recall looking into it and finding the v8 and transaxle would give a very high cruising rpm.

Interesting build I'm working on my T2 bay at the moment I looked into loads of different engine options based on what is readily obtainable in the uk My preference was to go Lexus 1uz v8 as I've used them in other builds but I decided to stay air cooled in the end It's going to cost me twice as much But I am using a Subaru gearbox "again twice the cost" but stronger and a much better cruising speed
Keep us posted on this Il be following

Hey so a mini update here, The van is 200km from home so I'm driving down tonight for an assessment/test fit/parts shopping list creation. I worked outside in a scrap yard this winter so after wrenching on -20c rusty stuff all day I didn't have anything left in me to go and do my own subzero wrenching 200km away, besides keeping my winter beater going! (Diff change at -31 windchill anyone? No?) Anyway, I last touched it in September so this fact finding mission will entail a test of the motor with my stripped wiring harness, checking braking and suspension systems for parts needed to safety (MOT equivalent) and mocking up the exhaust system!

Forgive not putting this in a single reply, I couldn't copy more than a single image at a time off my phone... New Sachs clutch kit, a random junkyard midbox and a muffler I literally ripped off a Focus at work in my break. (Hey, you try getting the generator to fire up at -25 below, haha). I ended up getting an adaptor plate for a TH350 Small Block Chevy transmission and V6 Chevy pattern that I can cut and weld into my old adaptor plate, beats faffing around with making a new one entirely. Just have to offer it up and see which way I need to weld it, it's been so long since I looked at the motor! I also got some gauges from work for oil, water and voltage for $5, score! Interesting note Re: Safety tests here in Canada. For non commercial stuff, a test is ONLY required ONCE, when you transfer ownership. So, buy a car new and you'd never ever have to get it inspected ever again. Up where I am there are no emissions tests either! Interesting build But I am using a Subaru gearbox "again twice the cost" but stronger and a much better cruising speed How do you plan on doing that? Disable AWD with fuse and flip the box over? I'd love a 5MT in this bus!

There is a company in Australia that make gearbox components and adapter plates for the Subaru gearboxes so you can make it two wheel drive and flip the diff for rear engine configurations it's called "subargear" or something like that

In Europe the Renault gearboxes are a popular swap. Maybe you can sourche a Eagle Premier of a Vixen RV one. They used it too.

nice progress. temps are gradually warming up here in NY and, though not as cold as where you are, it has been quite a winter.
keep at it....love this concept...

Thanks for the input and comments guys. Installed a water pump, thermostat and temp sensor and removed the fan. There is not enough space to run it, and besides the rad is at the front so it's not pulling air thru it. I figure an oil cooler if temps are high down the line, or some fins welded to the oil pan. I also need to run a dummy pulley in place of the power steering pump. I can't get enough tension on the water pump with just taking out the PSP pulley from the mix. No local scrappers around here so I'm hoping to find something suitable at the FLAPS,(Friendly Local Auto Parts Store). Replacement bushings (all 8) for the sway bar and end links are installed but the wheels need to be on with the bus on the ground to seat the links thru the lower control arm. Next is pulling the pilot bushing and getting it machined out to size for the VW pilot. Shocked it's larger than that found in a Chevrolet pickup! Need some metric nuts and bolts that are difficult / hens teeth to locate here too for the adaptor plate. Can't get the brake bleeder screws loose. Soaking in acetone and ATF as we speak, maybe I'll just get new release man calipers...
