love this, these things came with the worst factory engines. i have to ask, are you AvE of youtube fame? The wasserboxer is a terrible, terrible motor. Gutless doesn't cover it. Even the old overheated 14 times (literally) shagged piston ring rear main leaking badly adjusted carb'd boat anchor formerly in this out ran a healthy wasserboxer like a ferret past a snail. I thought of Subaru EJ25 but I already had a custom flywheel and 90% of an adaptor here so why not go Chevy. Ave, eh? Gentlemen if he was here it would be a treat especiale! He is west coast, I'm closer to the east, although that's still a good solid 18 hour drive away. Keep ya stick on the ice.

I love the fact that it doesn't matter where in the world you are - there's a renault gearbox available (if you're lucky enough to find the vehicle it's in anyway!)!! They're like rabbits or something - get everywhere and er, multiply!
Have to say I love the knowledge too - and the willingness to help someone, whom you're most likely never to actually meet (which is a shame, when we're all so like minded). great stuff.
(also love the commitment shown here - a) any weather with a minus in front of it isn't great, especially when it's more than 10.....and b) when the actual van is over 200km's away - well done chap and I'm enjoying the thread. Can't help in any way technically but just wanted to say - keep going!

One might assume with being a bilingual country and having a French province 2.8 times bigger than France itself you'd be tripping over Le Renault. I'll keep an eye out tho. It's really warmed up recently, we've gone from warming up the car without gloves will make you cry:sulated unheated garage to work inside but at least it's got a concrete floor! Again many thanks to the gearbox info and encouraging comments people keep posting.

OK, technical time! My old motor was externally balanced at the flywheel and my new flywheel is too. Old flywheel has drilled out points at 12 1 and 3 o clock. New flywheel has drilled out points at 12 and 1 o clock. 3 o clock position is minimal on the old flywheel. Can I check this at home DIY style? Old flywheel is 10 inch diameter and new one is 9 inch diameter with drill points taken from both at the outer edge. The 'new' flywheel is from the last iron duke, a '79 and worked great in that. The new 1991 motor is getting the 'new' flywheel from the old motor so I presume it's good to go! The old flywheel on the 1991 motor was bigger and did not clear the bellhousing on the VW. Hope that makes sense... and heres me in autumn down here complaining about 15 degrees..... subbed for more. AUZ / NZ? Always fancied taking a peek down that way to experience inverted life.

I'm not sure if they are any easier to find where you are but the V8 Range Rover p38 had an inline thermostate And the later MGF and all the rovers with the 1.8 K series engine like freelander and rover 75
If I think of any more il post them up

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've been told no stock in the country for the disco, p38 and BMW housings. All coming from the UK/Germany in 2-3 weeks. I may have to bite the bullet and order used from the states.
Not ideal as this van is now my home and I need it rolling soon!

If the Discovery or '38 ones would do, get onto Rimmer Bros or Island 4x4. I generally get parts from them in around three days.

Ask them for an in line one. Surely you’d pick something up for a domestic car

Rimmerbros I've heard of, hope they can expedite it!. Thanks for all the replies guys. I've been told no stock in the country for the disco, p38 and BMW housings. It's not stocked full stop, special order from UK/Germany or "backorder, and I can't say how many weeks that may or may not take". The fact I've been quoted upto $157 (100 quid-ish) doesn't irk me even though I've got this part for £20 back in blighty before haha.

Well, a real lack of pictures as I went into full 'git r done' mode for the last few days. What a ride it's been!! I think I'm into 200-250 hours total so far.
I wasn't happy with the clock of the motor and it sat too high for my liking. So, a custom spacer under the Trans mount, new engine mounts fabbed up and welded in, and some fiddling got the motor clocked even and the driveshafts sitting in the sweet spot. Welded up a custom exhaust from a spare muffler and spent hours pouring over the pin out diagrams for the ECU.
It now fires on the key but stalls immediately. I think the ECU wants control of the fuel pump relay, rather than the having it run with the key...
I need to sort: Fuel pump relay to ECU wire, Tidy wiring harness and solder up a few corrections, Bleed brakes, Figure a thermostat housing, fill and bleed. Install front springs, Weld a spring perch on passenger trialing arm.
Then we're in business.

So it runs!
Got it all plumbed in and wired up.
Only the clutch makes a god awful knocking when it is pressed in.
I used a new Sachs clutch kit, throwout included.
Culprits?
bad throwout from new? possible but unlikley Flywheel bolt backed out? then it would make noise at any pedal position Pressure plate bolt backed out? as above really...
The tranny is sitting with a 2 mm gap at at the motor and tight at the top. Is that enough to give my symptoms? I know I need to get that bolted flush asap.
I also ran the factory Chevy bronze bushing insert for the input shaft, in place of machining up an adaptor for the VW pilot to sit in the Chevy crank. Specs are 14.7mm input shaft and 15.1mm ID of the bushing. Having 0.4MM play would have been alright I thought?
Ideas? Don't want to pull the tranny but I know I may have to...
