Whilst on a quest to find a boring cheap to run modern reliable totaly naff daily, I discovered these, what I never new existed. Daihatsu Materia. Now I want one like I wanted a Nissan Cube a while back but couldnt put up with an auto. Everyone one else ive shown so far seems to think it looks rubbish, but thats been the same with every other car ive ever owned. Right up my street then. They’re a Toyota xb with a different front end so if you fancy making it look a bit different (better imho) you can import a few bits like headlights front bumper grill etc from Japan or America.

Daewoo Espero: Seriously? SERRRRIOUSLY? hahahah that's quite a dirty secret desire. I can't see what that has going for it. He's not alone I'd do an Espero... POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!! There's a great Photoshop of one that Will Carter or Octagonal Paul did, but I can't find it

Yeahhhhhh, I kind of see what you mean, but... for me, if I was going to do that anyway I think it would be even better with a better car. Like a Subaru SVX... or even the much maligned Vauxhall Calibre, which I have always liked... or a Peugeot 405 saloon or coupe Whichever way I look at it you'd end up with a better car. This may be an area of retro/modding that I'm really not grasping however. I like most of the autotat that's been posted in here but as soon as I saw that Daewoo appear I just found myself thinking that it has absolutely no personality, no character, charm, idiosyncratic quirks or any redeemable features. It's not that it's ridiculously bad - I tend to find I have a fondness for ridiculously bad cars - it's more that it just... it isn't anything. It just isn't hardly there. It's a non-product.

I like the way it looks, for a start. The eight-light glasshouse is a little unusual, the nose is very XM/Xantia-ish (also Bertone designs) and the slightly higher 'bum' gives it a hint of Alfa 155. You could drop it, chuck some nice wheels on it, debadge it, do something to all the black rubbery bits (vinyl, stickers). It's built on the J-platform, so Mk2 Cav bits would fit (such as a C20LET, that'd be fun!).

I'm more aware of toyotas reputation of being generaly typicly bullit proof. But I know nothing of Diahatsu in general and certainly not the Materia. Are they, y'know, actualy good n'stuff? These were also sold as the Toyota bB in Japan as well. The bB had a better sound system (was sold as a "Music Box for the younger generation") and cool blue dash lighting, but they're yaris running gear underneath. I like them as well, but the one thing I dislike about them, as well as the cube is that they're auto only, and it makes for a very boring drive. The Materia's are available in Manual Flavour

Not Retro yet or is it? I don't know but it's no dirty secret mobile... I think that's one of the few bona fide "classic in the making" modern cars of the last two decades. If I had the money to stick one of those in a climate controlled garage and just take it out for some summer driving, I would. I seriously love them.

Not Retro yet or is it? I cant help but think that it always has been, in a way, due to its looks. I think. There was a picture of a pale coloured one on here a while back with some very subtle mods, possibly just wheels an lows, and it looked proper retro.

So far I have yet to see anything on this thread that's old & slow - I mean proper old & slow - going slow in a vintage is the new going fast - you might not think so but these motors are a lot more fun than most people give them credit for so also on my list along with a 30's bus (people carrying type not the slang word type or worse still a type 2) is one of these

A time must come though when contemporary retro styling becomes officially retro product. It will be odd and interesting to see retro styled cars gathering at retro events, as examples of retro... not retro-styled.

I hope one day to take care and enjoy a 1920's or 30's vehicle. For me though they don't belong here because this is about stuff we might be ashamed of liking and not willing to admit to... and frankly I don't think many people would say there is anything to be embarrassed about fine fine old machines like this. I was at a classic car event in Sussex this summer and got talking to a bloke who had turned up in a 1920's car... pick up truck style thing. I really wish I hadn't been quite so fascinated by what he was telling me and showing me because I was so entranced by it all I completely forgot to take any pictures or make note of what the car actually was. It was a Ford. It was in authentic, unrestored condition and the owner spent ages talking em through it all and it was utterly fascinating. Each plug had its own coil box (I think they were called tremble coils) and each was a hand made, dovetail jointed wooden box that simply dropped into a shelf at the side of the engine. That meant that with the straight six engine running I could lift out any combination of coil boxes I liked (the just lifted out, they weren't fixed) and the engine would continue running on the remaining cylinders with no fuss. The instrumentation inside the car all LOOKED normal, but wasn't. What looked like a gear stick was something else. What looked like a three pedal box was not in fact a clutch, brake and accelerator... they were different things. The whole thing worked in a profoundly different way, but it worked absolutely fine, he used it as a daily driver. Utterly mindblowing really. I wouldn't classify anything like this as a dirty automotive desire!

I also fancy me one of these in a year or 2... They seem to be increasing monthly in price though at present!
