Mine comes from a Pete Wilford Cartoon published in LRO magazine around 1995 when BMW bought Rover Group.
A handy German phrasebook for 'DasLandRoverMan'. I've stuck with it since the early 2000's.

My username appears to be just "Tim". I'm a little confused by Proboards though, as over the years I seem to have chalked up three different user names and I have to choose the one to use each time I come here... a bit annoying because I sometimes choose "Spookytim" by mistake. If a "Spookytim" ever posts here, it's me, making a mistake. Of the three username choices I have though, none of them are "Quatermass" which is what I chose, and what I still have to type as my username if I log out completely and need to log back in. So despite my username appearing to be as imaginatively explainable as "it's my name", my reason for actually choosing and preferring Quatermass is that in the early 80's the BBC (I think) made a contemporary drama adaptation science fiction series based loosely on the Quatermass stories but set in the 80's with striking miners, CND activists and animal testing scientists all scrapping for supremacy with some nordic druids on a post-apocalyptic Bodmin moor. The main character drove a Mk1 sherpa van which had been Mad-maxed to the full extent of the BBC's budgets (ie it had some fencing mesh sellotaped to the windows), and I absolutely loved that van. I really desperately wanted to be able to drive a beat up old battle wagon like that... and it has pretty much defined my preferences and choice in cars ever since. I was about ten years old, and I have never grown out of my fetish for beat up, ugly rolling cr*p. If it ain't a beaten up old dog, I don't really want to own it. Edit: AND HERE IT IS!!!! AND IT STILL MAKES ME FEEL GIDDY WITH EXCITEMENT... ^ That van is the sole reason I cosmetically knackered my beloved old knackered Bedford CF2... Somebody please tell me the zombie apocalypse is coming soon. I don't think I can wait much longer. The suspense is killing me EDIT 2... AAAAANNNNDDDDD I'VE JUST SUCCESSFULLY CHANGED IT TO QUATERMASS! NOW GIVE ME MY SHERPA.

neilsdavies there's a lot to be said for screen names least of all to stop identity theft, yours is your name where you live and part of your DOB. it wouldn't take much to find the rest if you know where to look. Colin You are quite correct Colin, and its something that I had thought about. There are far more interesting people than me to steal the identity of! At the time I started using my actual name as my username, I was drag racing regularly and also writing race reports for one of the VW magazines, so having my real name out there didn't really phase me and made it less confusing when I posted about what i was writing about. Also, my job means I'm quite careful about what I post - I treat forums like sticking a postcard to a wall in that anyone can read it and it's there for ever. Many employers Google prospective employees so I'd rather be easy to find with nothing to hide!

A combination sounded suitably disaffected.

Back in my skinnier days I had a crew cut and looked a bit like forest gump, and being young and not caring about my Saturday job I used to make a lot of mistakes leaving the older boys to mock me with forest gump quotes and then became gump then if something was cocked up at work they say it was'a gumpy job' and it stuck for so long that some friends only know me as that.

and it stuck for so long that some friends only know me as that. There's a chap I work with who has a neighbour (on the same estate) known as 'Vanwank' as someone caught him pulling himself off in the back of a van sometime in the mid 80's. It's stuck that well that kids whose parents hadn't been born at the time call him that.

I occasionally use the classifieds now and that's it. I've not used it since the sell out and split. Like you, used to be on there daily but it was never the same after. Used to be on rods n sods a lot too but then when someone said "you associate with these people?" in reference to the general racism, right wing leftie-baiting feel of the place I stepped back and felt inclined to agree, so I quit. Also binned my Facebook too, getting to be a bit of a recluse these days...

I'm Adam, I'm not 73 years old nor a particular fan of Britain's Got Talent.. 73bgt refers to my first car (if only it looked that good currently ) Which I plan on never selling, so hopefully my username will remain relevant

An unknown number of moons ago (Nov 2006) I got myself a 1.6 Mark2 Golf driver as a project/toy thingy. Thats a whole other long winded tale of a car yet to be finished. While setting up my digital identity for joining the online VW communities Chip Foose's Overhaulin' was a staple diet of my TV schedule. Knowing that i would never achieve the greatness of the Big Foose i rearranged the show title to better suit my skill set. Underhauled (not overhauled enough) was born. First time I've ever had to explain this to humans.

Robin - actual real life name
XR4i - car I owned when I first started using car forums.
BOOM! RobinXR4i. So yeah I have the imagination of a goldfish.
Although I have been robinsexwithyoureyes and robinworralthompson, due to various hilarious RRG shenanigans and moderators changing me name.
