Calling all Rover V8 Nerds!
I'm looking to build a fast road rover v8 to replace the engine in my TVR 400, the existing engine is fine but I want a bitmore oomph and I've never built an engine so keen for the challenge! Done a bit of research and come up with the following spec:
Buy a 4.6 range rover engine fit 4.0 pistons some spangly heads (V8 Dev warrior maybe?) a lumpy camshaft (v8d as well maybe - they seem to be the people to go to!)
3d printed manifold with bike throttle bodies and megasquirt
Does this sound like a reasonable plan?
Any tips or suggestions?
Its going to sound amazing......

Around 300hp but remaining driveable for a reasonable budget. I like the challenge of the throttle bodies and manifold too, and it will sound epic!
I could just use the existing 4ltr engine with new heads and cam but the extra displacement seems worth it from what I can tell!

you might want to think about steped liners as well, they seem to have bit of a habit of moving on the 4.6 (might be related to the nigh on 3 tons they usually pull around as well)

Getting an RV8 to an honest an reliable 300BHP is not a cheap journey. My small journal 4.5 build. The 232BHP small journal 4.0L it is replacing had bills (not from my pocket) for £7K

After building a 300hp rv8 several years ago I’d say you’d be able to fit a Toyota 1uz v8 with a manual conversion for the same sort of budget and make 300 all day long with a vvti 4.3 version

That said, there is probably more value to keeping a TVR as an RV8. That and not many engine swaps are a walk in the park when you step away from the family of engines... How much do Chimaera 450/500 engines go for these days?

You will be falling well short of 300BHP with a standard Griff 500 engine.

On to my 2nd uz build now with a 3uz 4.3 coupled to a 6sp bmw diesel box . Engine with loom and Ecu £800 Wiring conversion with fuse box and instructions £500 Gearbox adapter kit £450 Clutch kit with used flywheel £250 Gearbox £140 Propshaft £240 Exhausts would be a bit of work but most people reverse the std Lexus log exhausts to do turbo builds so might be fairly straight forward . £3500 would be a fair budget to do it , how that compares to getting the rv8 there now I don’t know.

Attach RV8 to anchor chain, donate to local shipyard. Fit 5.0L Jaguar.
Save many thousands of pounds for beer.

There's a reason why all the Tomcat, Bowler, etc, lads went off and started chucking them in instead of the RV8, they were picking a motor up for about 2k a pop. A genuine 300bhp (not, "My mate says it's 300bhp down the pub") from an RV8 is expensive, especially if you want one where all the rods stay in the block after a 6 months. No good if you want to stick with the OE engine block for the car, mind. But cheap power in the long run compared to an RV8

Yes, for a 500bhp crate engine, they're £1500-2000 for a used example.

I used to be on another forum (koff, koff) that sort of specialised in RV8's. As one of the few Chevy owners on there I was astounded by financial cost of 300bhp+ engines and their fragility. For originality you're stuck, for cheaper power you have an awful lot of options.

Thanks for the replies guys! I know it was never going to be the cheapest option but I'm keen to stick with the Rv8 for several reasons:
It should bolt straight into the TVR with the same exhausts, gearbox etc, the external dims of the engine wont change.
I love a good LS but realistically once you get all the little bits and pieces you need to get it fitted its definilty not going to be 1500-2k - I've looked into it before for other cars.
I want to build an engine rather than do an engine change, never built and engine so keen to conquer that challenge!
A 1uz is another awesome engine for a great budget but I'm.not sure if it would fit in the chassis rails with twin cam heads, also it gets back into an engine change rather than an engine build.
It doesnt need to be 300hp really, its just a bit of a target, if i could use a fairly standard bottom end with some more fancy heads and a cam then that would probably be enough.
Maybe the way to go is to rebuild my existing 4.0 with better heads, cam and throttle bodies - would there be a significant difference between the 4.0 and 4.6 with the same top end? Would i need to do rods and pistons too or are they ok for a bit more power?
Basically i can chuck 3-4k at it over the next year or so and want to find the best route for this budget!
