Just been to pick up my latest project.
Nissan Patrol 260 LWB. 3.3 Litre straight 6 diesel with 5 speed box.
Low miles, looks quite straight and tidy, well enough to be respectable.
Still plenty to do but a good basis and it drives very well.

Very square. Very, very square, but looks to be a pretty sound purchase.
The SD33 engine is a good hardy lump though, doesn't look stunning on paper, but is pretty good in real life.
I know a lad who used to have a LWB Series IIA Land Rover with the complete engine and box fitted, and it was a brilliant thing to drive, sounded excellent too. I had the chance to buy it about ten years ago, couldn't raise the money quickly enough.

The SD33 is one of my favourites. Not powerful, not fast, and on paper not really that torquey. It just works. Its smooth, sounds nice and it pulls from nothing. A very lazy and under stressed engine.
For its age, its not bad. I'm very happy to have it, yes it is a project but I would want to go through everything anyway.
I bought it because I always wanted one since i was a kid, when this came up I had to move.
My main intention is to check all the mechanical's out, preventative maintenance etc. Generally it will be a weekend classic car, but will be used off road, camping and long distance trips.
Since my last trip to Africa I sold my Defender,so this will also replace the role of the 300TDI beasty.
It will be getting a new Hannibal roof rack, as I have yet to find any other rack I prefer. On that rack, my other Hannibal luxuries like roof tent, storage boxes and extra jerry can holders will be be fitted.
Inside is pretty good condition wise, just a case of adding the fittings so all my storage boxes and paraphernalia can be secured properly.
Among my collection of steel 16 inch wheels, I have the original Patrol wheels that need refurbishing, also a set of split rim steelies are on the list to be used.
Right now, I am on the hunt for parts, waiting for enquiries to be responded to etc. Time to give it a service.

Briliant truck. Mate had one with turbo and it was unstoppable. Geared so well. Always wanted to put this engine into later GR model.. advantage of coil springs and all that, but old 6 pot bullet proof engine.

Great choice!! My all time favorite! I had a couple of them over the years and have all factory Nissan repair manuals and parts books. I almost know every part of these from my mind... :-) I also have one advise for you: Rust prevention! They can rust like an 70's Alfa or Fiat! Comon rust spots: Sills A posts All body mounts Firewall Area around the heaterbox intake Area around the top of the windscreen Around the door hinges Arches Bottoms of all dooors Please poor lots of anti rust in this beauty! BTW, the model code for these is 160. The 260 is the Spanish built one from 1988 with the upgraded grille, mirrors, suspension and RD28 engine.

I thought it was strange to have a 260 3.3. but mine is a 1990!? Are there any specialists that supply parts for these? I want some good quality service parts, also will be needing wheel bearings, and all parts to rebuild the swivels etc. they don't 'need' doing yet but would like to go through everything and get it perfect. How easy is it to get the rear half shafts out of the axle casing? I would like to replace the wheel bearings and also the wheel studs as the threads are damaged on some of them.

Milner Off Road are usually pretty good for bits for Japanese 4x4's. They only list the 260 type Patrol on their website but perhaps worth a call?

I think most of my Mitsubishi wear some of their parts. Unfortunalety as you said, they only list the 260 2.8 diesel. Even then they don't have much of a range for it. They seem to be popular in France etc at events along with the 70 series Cruiser so hopefully its just a case of remembering car part names in other languages and ebaying that country. Right hand drive stuff I will have to get in from down under. I have joined a couple of OZ Patrol forums hoping they can tell me what works from other models etc. As I don't really want to order all the wrong stuff.

Yep, MK or MQ patrols are still fairly popular over here with SD33 engines because you can't kill them. By 88, they had started on the Y60 or GQ series, but they didn't have the 3.3 in them.

I buy my stuff from the dealer or Euro4x4parts.
The rear half shafts come out really easy; unbolt the nuts of the bearing carrier on the backing plate and pull the axle shaft. Don't let it slide on the axle seal. There are 2 seals on each side; and oil seal for the diff oil and a grease seal for the wheel bearing.

If you PM me your VIN number I can look up the exact build date. Mine is build in november 1983. Nissan had a fire in the Japanese Patrol factory so the latest 160's came all from Spain. Spain and some other south european country's also had a Spanish build 2.7 Perkins diesel available.
And in Pakistan the 160 is build until 2004 or something, all with the Z24 4 banger!

That's a really nice Patrol! Was it for sale on eBay recently? I think I remember seeing it, or at least one very similar.
At first I found getting clear info on the Patrol models a little bit difficult - Australia has the biggest knowledge base about these vehicles, but as Sciclone said, they were sold until the Y60/GQ came out in '88. However, in Europe (and other areas), the Spanish-built 260 Patrol continued alongside the GQ until at least 1994. The 260 is very similar to the MK Patrol but there are a few differences (some engine options, for one. A slightly different grille for another). I suspect that sometimes the 260s were built from whatever parts they had at the time. I know even Nissan UK struggled to find info on my South African import 260 when I needed some parts.
Like jelmerc31 said, fill the thing to the gills with Waxoyl! These things love to rot. Mine was Waxoyled very thoroughly and still managed to rot in places but it survived remarkably well.
Looking forward to updates on this. Enjoy your Patrol!

Thanks for all the above advise and interest.
It has of course had quite a few repairs as it is an old J in England. Some good, some not so good. It is basically solid though and I have something to work with.
Lots of little bits to take car of and things like wiring for lights not working. The previous owner replaced the batteries, but since then the dash electrics in the cluster have stopped working, so I have no guages, and the warning lights don't work. The heater etc still does work. Nothing complicated on these though so hopefully I can sort it easily. I got the huge Nissan repair manual with the car so should help as it has wiring schmatics in the back.
Once I have done all the work I need, I will go over everything and waxoyl or dinitrol again inc taking off the trims to do inside panels etc.
I have driven the Patrol a few times ( love it) I want to give it a full service and new brakes as you always want to when you get a new car. Also getting a slight squeal now and again from the n/s/r wheel area. Might just be brakes but guessing the bearings are old. And due to thread damage I need to replace some studs. and some of the wheel nuts are odd. I want a set of proper wheels nuts.
Updates soon.

Differences are: *Front grille and panel under it *Mirrors *Plastic moulding on tailgate *Rear wiper on tailgate instead on rear glass *Different center console with digital clock *Grey interior instead of blue or beige *Longer front springs *Chromed knuckle balls on front axle *Different rear springs and schock setup *RB30, RD28 and RD28T engines Offcourse some more minor things like brackets. I have a 260 body on my 160 and had to cut a lot off small brackets from my 160 body to make it fit. Some electrical parts are made in Japan and some by Valeo. I have the factory service manual for these too.
