Morning all!
On September 2nd I am going to be in London for 24 hrs before catching my flight to LA. I have never been to London and am going to be super excited for California so need something to occupy my time. Anybody tell me any cool car related things I can do in London. Bare in mind I am using public transport.
Cheers dudes and dudettes!

Really not sure I can help, as I tend to work there but get out as fast as possible. Maybe try to message Seth and see if he has ideas. Your 24 hrs are enough if you find one or two things to do and travel outside of commuter hours.

Go here: London transport MuseumI thought this place was great and you can do it in a day. A lot of places need 2, even 3 days to tour properly. Covent Garden is nice too, an expense but be aware that you are in tourist capital city. The food in regular places isn't the best, dirty behind the scenes. Here you a a fair but not long walk away from the London Icon Big Ben (actually Elizabeth tower). Smash the tube over to Tower hill, cross the bridge, an engineering marvel, and if you have pots of money, ( book ) have a meat feast in Goucho's: Goucho's . It's not cheap but is the nuts if you go there on a good evening and are lucky with a decent window seat. After, you can stroll up the South bank next to the Thames, see many types of 'artists' at work, a skate park and that big wheel thing and then raid some bars for some extremely overpriced Italian lager. It's gonna cost a fair few quid but you get to see many things. My advice for visiting London is to structure your day before hand, the tube is great and staff are brilliant most of the time, get an Oyster card for public transport, you can then just beep your way around London on the tube and busses. Avoid UBER, no one likes them but don't be phased if a black cab won't stop for you, they are out looking for better fares. You will waste a long time getting lost and disoriented if you don't plan so know where you are going, what you are doing and keep valuables in your front pockets where you can feel them. It's a great place but it is packed with all walks of life. Sounds like my perfect day. I lived and worked in Holborn for 2 years.

I live in that there London so might be able to suggest something. Where are you staying for your 24 hours since you don't really want to spend the whole time travelling around on the tube? And sorry rude but I don't rate Gaucho. Much better steaks to be had for much less money. Plus their wine list is very pricey and not very good

I've lived in London for 25 years and there's really not that much car-related unless there are specific shows on, something good happening at the Ace, or the Chelsea cruise, and I don't know of anything happening in town that day. Many of the museums are free to enter though - the Science Museum usually has enough car or engineering related stuff to satisfy a petrolhead. BUT if you take a trip down to Brighton on the 2nd it's the awesome, historic Brighton Speed Trials. A vast array of interesting stuff always turns out for this - it's been running since 1905 brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk/brightonspeedtrials.phpen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brighton_Speed_TrialsYou can watch the cars run for free by just finding a spot on the prom, but I like to mosey round the pits so usually get a ticket.

If I was visiting London the Imperial War Museum in South Kensington would probably be my first port of call. Tenuous link to 'automotive' - IWM displays a range of vehicles encompassing tanks, armoured cars, aircraft, etc. including HMS Belfast. Admission to the Museum is free but getting onto HMS Belfast will cost £16.00 and seeing Churchill's war rooms £19.00. Wikipedia

When in London, may I recommend a trip to Euston or Kings Cross from where you may go to Manchester or Newcastle? 😁

It's a safe bet when doing a flying visit and I don't drink wine so I wouldn't know about that sort of thing but I've been three times and it's been fantastic every time. But no, it's not my favourite and yes, there is cheaper and better food out there but you'll need to go off the beaten track to find them. This is my favourite little hidden gem.
Time warp back to the Spanish 80's! I have in-laws doing air b'n'b 2-5 minutes walk from St Pancras if you need cheap digs.

This place would be a great visit if you are staying anywhere near Heathrow? www.londonmotormuseum.co.uk/Some good stuff when visited last. Perhaps not so good if you aren't near Heathrow though.....

Asked a similar question in february, but we planned to stay in London for a couple of days. Can´t tell you anything particularly car-related, but if I was in London on a sunday morning again I would go to Brick lane again. Nice market, some flea market, some musicians here and there, lots of food... I would like to see the rib man, who should be around there on sundays. We´ve been staying in a hotel not too far away from his usual "restaurant", but I only heard about him after our London trip. Thanks for that lol! Just ordered some of his sauces n rubs. Never heard of him before.

Wow! Thanjs for all the replies! I haven't yet booked my sleeps for the night but will be aiming for as cheap as possible as I would rather spend the money in California! I now think my day will be spent in an array of free museums or in Brighton! Is Ace cafe fairly easy to reach from the city centre?

Not too bad - there's a train station around the corner if I remember right. Not been down there for a few years, but the food was always decent and not expensive at all.
