Well she is mobile again! I have ended up changing the bottom arms, top arms and track rod ends both sides because it was all massively overdue. As you can see with the old vs new parts side by side. All the old parts were well used! I had hit the curb hard enough to almost weld the track rod end into the hub. This in turn bent the actual track rod end ... but amazingly didn't bother the drag link or surrounding steering parts. Had to travel to Dronsfields in Oldham as nowhere local had any steel 7.5x16's (w210 rims). So now sporting a sexy pair of black steels at the rear (soon to be all 4) wrapped in those difficult to find 215/45/16 tyres. Part worms are almost impossible to get so £80+ per tyre. This hugely helps both clearance in arches and acceleration! And here is proof she is mobile.... Yay..... just have to not crash it again now lol

Because they were at the time of the photo. Had a 215/55/16 on the passenger and a 205/55/16 on the drivers!
Now all match and are 215/45/16.... still look enormous though on steels.

What ET are those steels? I was considering fitting 16x7.5 steels to my W202 but could only find W210's with an ET41.

The steels on this are from W210! ET 41 (no clearance issue). 7.5j, 16 inch, with 1 inch spacers behind the rears!
You have to be careful using steels and alloys from newer Mercedes models than the W210, the W210, W202 share the same bolt sizes M12 I believe .... W211 and W203 I believe use M14 bolts so the holes in the rims are the wrong size!
The alloys I have on the front are ET41 (again W210) and I have no clearance issues at all and overall a wider track which help with grip and road holding.
In my opinion the standard ET37 wheels sit too far inboard aesthetically and always looks like they are too narrow for the car (personal taste really).

Youre a little confused regarding offset. An ET 41 wheel actually sits further IN than an ET37. The lower the offset the further outward the wheel sits. I'm getting a set of 7x16 Et37s banded to 10" rear and 8" front for my W203. I'm glad you got your car fixed relatively easily, looks good!

Thanks guys for your comments.
I think the only way to fit 16'' steels is to band a set of 16x7 E37, the W210 16x7.5 ET41's only seem to move the wheel closer to the suspension which I don't really want but I do like the steels. Of course spacers will do the trick but I ideally don't want them either but I may have follow your lead chompysnake.
At present my car (230K Sport version) has 16x7 ET37 alloys as standard and all I've done is leave the fronts as they are with standard 205/55 tyres and purchased the same style alloys for the rear 16x8 ET36 (also available with ET30 from the R170 SLK) with 225/50 tyres. These should fill the rear arches nicely I think as they'll poke out an extra 14mm. Hope I've no issues as they'll be 11mm closer to the suspension?

Yes you were right! The reason for the confusion in my head was the wheels fitted are 7.5’s instead of 7’s or 6.5’s! ET41 7.5j puts the face almost in the same place as 6.5j ET37.
They still look too far inboard even with spacers at the rear (imo)
I wouldn’t worry too much about clearance at the rear as long as you don’t go too crazy then an 8 inch rim should sit nicely, the wrong tyre size may eat the rear arch liner though.... I learned that the hard way lol

After meeting a fellow W202 owner locally the other day I ended up acquiring something that I had been looking at for a while. A deep dish suede OMP steering wheel! For a very reasonable price I got the boss, wheel and horn push. The main reason for wanting one of these is the fact that due to height and other reasons, I have to sit fairly far away from the wheel. Couple this with the utter hatred of the not round and bus sized steering wheel in the W202 and no adjustment being a classic... I had plenty of reasons to swap it over! I may have ended up with an airbag fault but I have removed the bulb for now and I’m not concerned about accidental deployment as that’s not a possibility as it currently stands! Basically when you turn the ignition on, SRS light comes on as normal then goes out. 3 seconds after it goes out it comes straight back on and stays on. I think that the wiring may be damaged behind the wheel or the ecu believes that there has been a deployment.... maybe both even though I used the correct resistor etc (battery was totally isolated before I started and during the job). One small annoyance is the boss squeaks when turning slightly. I have tried varying degrees of tightness but it makes no difference. It’s not the plastic/rubber cowling. It’s definitely coming from the area that the boss bolts to the column.... i will maybe remove and refit with some grease or something but for now I can live with it.

The very idea of such a "sports" wheel on Mercedes makes me smile at the incongruity. Shame the boss adapters invariably look terrible & often intended for flat wheels leaving the column stalks a long way from the rim.

Also I think incongruity sums up most of the things on my car .... It’s not finished by a long shot and the brown has to be evicted I think as I would prefer black.

Your car looks great ....but sorry that steering wheel ain’t right, just my opinion of course Thanks, I’m glad that I’m not the only person that likes how the car looks. All opinions are welcomed here, the wheel is a little out of place agreed. But it’s damn comfortable.... maybe have it re trimmed at some point to match in a little better? But unless something else a similar size appears that fits in better it will be staying there. And it’s better than feeling like I’m driving a bus where even with the seat all the way to the floor my knees are in the way lol

Having got two of these Mercs myself I have to say that compared to the standard wheel I really like this. However, don't forget to inform your insurers of this change as it can be classed as a modification to the safety features of the car. If you don't inform them and then try to make a claim they will most likely refuse to pay out.

What you really need now is one of those fake wood steering wheel covers, proper eBay special. That'll blend right in with the interior and nobody will know!
