Car is going up for sale .... I'm putting it on this forum first as that's the most likely place it's going to find a new home! Price I want is about £850 I wish you luck with your sale but going from my own experience I think that you are possibly being a bit optomistic on price though. I have two of these, one is a mint condition 1996 C180 saloon in silver with a genuine 60k miles, full history and an immaculate interior. It is 100% stock. Two years ago I tried to sell it and got no interest at all at £650. Eventually I lowered it to £450 and only had one person look at it - and they didn't buy it. It was more valuable to me as a spare car so I kept it. Your car with its modifications will appeal to quite a small market and the lowered suspension look will put a lot of 'sensible' buyers off. You may be better of returning it to stock thus opening up a much larger market place. Then sell on the modified parts and make more money from them. Good luck - if it sells I may consider advertising mine again (but I'm not expecting to get much for it, probably around £400 at best even with a years ticket) These cars are currently in that void area between 'banger' and 'soon to be classic' status. Unfortunately to most people they are just an old Mercedes from the era when they rusted away whilst you watched!!.

Squonk, tell me more. I am after a good one of these. It's currently in storage but with a house move looming, about five other cars to get rid of and the fact that I'm currently recovering from an operation theres not much chance that I can do much about it for the forseable future! I'm about 150 miles from you anyway!

^^^^ really depends on the car I turned down £2000 for mine, but I've no intention of ever selling it I think it depends on much more than that!! In some areas particular types of car don't sell. Where I am you could sell any 4 x 4 in any condition instantly. But a hot hatch is pretty useless on these roads so the market is limited. Modified cars are generally difficult to sell unless you can find someone that is specifically looking for modified vehicle - and that person is probably outnumbered by 100 to 1 by those that want a standard car. What also doesn't help at the moment is the ease at which people can buy a new car on PCP. This has flooded the used car market with older cars and that in itself has had a huge effect on secondhand prices all over the country. I recently paid virtually nothing for a fully loaded and immaculate 05 Chrysler Grand Voyager, A car which when new cost £38k!! The seller had just bought a brand new Audi and needed to get rid. This is typical of what is going on in the used car market at present. Now is a great time to buy an old car but a lousy time to sell.

Well I don't care if I actually end up keeping the car so I'm not about to stick a £500 price tag on it!
I paid £750 for it on 1st of December last year. Since then I have spent around £1800 on maintaining the car to a very high standard with mostly genuine parts directly from MB. The cars history is all present and correct from day one of purchase with the original owner purchasing it as an ex demonstrator vehicle back in late 97. He kept the car for 18 years up until he died when his son took ownership and then 2 years on I bought it!
This car is mechanically perfect in pretty much every way with the only exception being the ac which if I keep it I will fix.
My price isn't at all optimistic in the slightest, if anything I am selling it cheaply for what it is and how much cash I have put into it. It's a 20 year old car that has had maintenance at no expense spared with a clean MOT sheet and stacks of paperwork to back it all up.
I guess as with all things it all depends on what the car is worth to the individual person. I will not be returning it to stock even though I could do that within an afternoon if I so desired .... also let's not forget that there is a large amount of spares with the car that includes an entire set of doors (with the glass) a bonnet and a boot. Plus a few other really hard to find parts too.
I get it's not everyone's cup of tea I really do.... but I'm not shifting on the price! If that means that I keep the car for another few years then I will definitely not be unhappy as I do really like it. It's mechanically just about perfect, comfortable and capable of munching high miles with ease and looks good doing it.

Wow, its amazing how similar the history of your car is to mine!! Mine was owned by an elderly gent from new until he died. The executor of his will sold the car to my father in 2010(for £800) and he ran it until he died in 2012. It then passed on to me. It sat for about a year until my wife needed a cheaper car to run as she was doing 100 miles a day three days a week (not hugely cheap in her HiLux). Two years ago my daughter got a diesel Clio so the wife used that instead. I tried selling the Merc and got nothing other than (in my opinion) stupid offers so the car was put into storage and kept as a spare.
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY hope you get what you want for the car. If you do I will be getting mine out of storage and sticking it back up for sale. But like you, I am happy to hold on to mine rather than sell it for a price that I consider too low.

Found it! This has come on very nicely, shame you're considering selling it when it's so close to where you want it. I wonder if you've something else in mind you'd like to get. I think this is the nicest looking car you've had since the Barrow Hill Cavalier days.

If it really is as good as you say it is, it'd be worth me getting it for my Wife's daily. (She loves my Mercs but E & S classes are too big for her)

OP good luck with the sale. Sure it'll get snapped up.

The car is being kept now. I wasn't going to take it off sale so soon, but a bigger engine dropped on my lap for literally peanuts! I know that I could have chosen a larger lump to convert to. However a 2.4 V6 is not to be sniffed at given the price that I'm paying! The car will go from around 136bhp to 169bhp on the new engine if I use the standard ecu. The 2.4 V6 is a damn strong engine and is able to be tweaked a little for extra. I think if I go much more than 200bhp the car will have too much power, given the fact that I have no traction control and lower gearing.... 169bhp is ample improvements and being V6 it will sound far nicer than the 4 pot! It will take me a good few months to get everything sorted so watch this space

Well.... It's all sh*ts and giggles, until someone giggles and sh*ts themselves! Avoiding action and too much right foot + oncoming Micra K11 makes for this mess! I chose the curb over the micra 😜 I think she's fixable but the old girl is going to need the much overdue front suspension overhaul to get there! Never before has this car lost traction on a dry road .... until today of course! I must say, Dunlop make a bloody strong tyre and Mercedes make a damn good wheel because amazingly the tyre has stayed inflated with very minimal sidewall damage (a very small egg on the impact point). I thought that the frame was bent..... on closer inspection it seems the lower control arm and the anti roll bar took most of the impact and the only thing hurt is a little pride and a bit of pavement

Ouch!!
Its hard to see from the picture but I doubt that there is damage to the anti roll bar. They pop out quite easily as I found myself when I towed one of mine with a strap around the anti roll bar (long story!!).
I'd take a close look at the steering rack as it too will have taken a hefty whack.

Have taken the wheel off and on the surface it looks like I have bent the lower control arm very badly and as the anti roll bar is attached to it, that's also bent out of shape (as mentioned this may pop back when unbolted).
And you are correct this car is on a box not a rack..... just hoping the drag link is alright.
For a start I'm going to unbolt stuff and see what happens before I make any decisions on it's fate.
