So. My trusty (and fave car I ever owned) Octavia VRS has, well, she's poorly.
Now, the illness manifested as a slipping clutch. Stepping out of the car, I could smell gearbox oil. Looked under the car, she's done a widdle on the floor. Tried to pop the bonnet, the cable snapped. The odo reads 222000 miles. There's a knocking from the passenger front. All that said, she has been super reliable and sailed through every MOT, and I know that it will be a wishbone, a seal and a clutch that needs changing.
So, once I get her into the workshop, and on the ramps, I will assess the damage and whether or not it's worth saving. In the event she needs to retire, I need to get on to thinking about replacements. (I am tempted to buy an engine and gearbox and build up a beasty tuned 4 pot that chucks out something over 240bhp to drop in there).
Must be an estate must have (or be easy to get) a tow bar must have some grunt (more than the VRS, which is 180bhp - bonus points if it north of 300). Must be reliable (it's going to be a tow horse and parts hauler), Must have reasonable cost for parts Nowt too fancy, that I can spin spanners on without needing a twelfty million pounds dealer-only electronic dangleberry dinglehopper defuckulator just to change the photon chuckers. Oh, and if I can avoid it, no chuffin CAN-bus Aaaaaand of COURSE, something pretty cool!
My initial thoughts: Another VRS Audi S6 V8 Scooby Legacy
But none of those are really retro... Trying to be inspired here! So... hit me with your ideas!

Just get another vRS. I'm on my second. They rock on all levels. Exactly this. If it ain't broke (ok it is), then don't fix it (err, ok, if you buy another you probably won't have to - at least not straight away hopefully!) But I'm sure you get my drift. What's the chipping potential with the VRS?

240bhp easily attainable. I've seen 20vT motors on the racing scene well north of 300. There's also this magnificent beast out there... Put your speakers on Ok it's a bored out valver rather than the mighty 20vT, but it shows what is possible... ... Though, VR6 converted Octavia..??

One of these two
Although get the fwd Volvo (unless you need 4wd) as it has a way better chassis than the 4wd in the video.

SAAB 9-5 Aero. Much nicer car. More SAAB than the 9-3 linkeeCard carrying member of the 9-5 Aero estate fan club here. Early cars are 230 to 250 bhp. An £80 remap takes you to stage 1 and 270 bhp. Add in a 3.5 bar fuel pressure regulator, a bigger intercooler and 3 inch down pipe (c. £400 if you buy s/h) and you've got around 295 bhp and 420 Nm of torque. You can pick up a decent car for around £1000. I've done 25,000 in the last year, averaged 31mpg. Bits are pretty cheap and all easily available.

... Though, VR6 converted Octavia..?? they sound good and make big power when modified, but thats all they have going for them, heavy complex damn thirsty and underpowered otherwise, less power than a mildly breathed on 1.8T.

Mercedes E420/430 estate
rock solid (buy the nicest one you can find) and cheap parts
the code reading bit might be an issue, but you won't need that very often.

Get the Mk2 vRS and it comes with the wonderful 2.0T. 200bhp stock, and 250bhp+ is just an easy remap away...

Is the MK2 into complicated PITA special tools and black magic territory?

No idea - I'm more the type of person who hands a car to someone who knows what they're doing and says 'fix this' or 'make this bit better'. It's basically a Mk5 Golf GTI underneath, if that helps

I do that, and then they say "Yes for twelfty million pounds" so I go "Screw that" and get the hammer out and fix it for 50p usually... Trouble is the newer / more modern the car, the less places you can hit it with the hammer...

What's your budget?
V70 is the answer to everything, I am a massive fan. That said, I own an E61 Touring and it's really, really nice (albeit stuffed to the gills with electronics, but I have a good Indy if I need him). 6 pot diesel, lots of chug, good on fuel and doesn't sound too offensive either.

No idea on budget really. The new clutch for the VRS is going to be about £130 with my discounts. On top of that, there's whatever seal has popped to make her wee all over the floor, and then there's the fact that she is sitting at 222k so expecting things to go South from here... All in I think I can get the VRS sorted for around the £500 to be fair. But, it's the devil I know vs a younger less abused car that is an unknown quantity...
