VAG reliability is a myth. I don't think it's a myth. I think it's the case that most cars are fairly reliable these days, and you only hear of the handful of horror stories. No one takes to social media to shout that their car made the trip to work again today, despite being 10,000 miles overdue a service and driven with the clutch ridden most of the way through slow traffic. Why VAG is touted as being more reliable I suspect it a combination of good marketing and interchangeability of parts between platforms. that said, my VRS has been an absolute trooper and cost me next to nothing for parts in all the years I have owned it.

It is very much a myth. My Ma was a director for VAG bitd (its not been called VAG for 25 years) and its all built on clever marketing and cultivation of the corporate image. For example, take the reliability index figures. These are based on actual breakdown and repair data, empirical numbers. They do not rely on impressions of ownership and service like JD power. You cite the Skoda Octavia, so let's use that as an example. The Octavia. www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/225OK, middle of the road, nothing to shout about. A random similar sized example, the Mondeo. www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/82Actually a touch better, yet the public image of Fords is one of mediocre reliability. Let's try another. The VW Golf is often held aloft as a paragon of soliditiy and reliability. www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/276Not bad. Upper middle of the road. Now let's look at the Focus. www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/73Better still. Again, form a manufacturer who's reliability image lags well behind that of VW Group. The difference is that VW Group have since the sixties been the masters of clever advertising, building a public image of gloss, shine, and prestige. They then use this carefully cultivated image to justify charging the public more for their products, which would otherwise be utterly unwarranted. Conversely Ford, who make a demonstrably more reliable product (in the random examples above) have never had the knack and their marketing has always been aimed at the everyman. In terms of reliability they're simply a mass manufacturer, and their products are roughly comparable to anyone else's in that regard. Anyone who harks on about the brands rock solid dependability have fallen for an image, not the cold, hard, numerical reality.

I can't say that the few Vws I've had have been that reliable, neither can my friend with his Passat. What we do agree on though is that the PD engine is awesomely reliable, it's the car around it that let it down. Away to witness protection now

Which of the estates is easiest to modified in terms of power I.e being chipped remapped etc etc
Is engine size always the winner or will a smaller engine with a turbo out perform a big high litre engine

A remapped 1.8t isn't to bad on fuel and is fairly quick tbh.

I think the VAG build quality and reliability relates more to the older cars. I've had mates have no end of trouble with modern golfs and audis but I've had mk2s and sciroccos that have sat for years on a drive and start 1st turn with a new battery. Just my opinion...

Older cars have less to go wrong, and simpler to fix.
Go retro or don't... go home because your modern cars curse word.
