Tints need to go for me as well. I hope there aren't any nasty surprises lurking under those scabs. It's a real shame these rusted so badly although most of the ones that you still see running around seem to be in pretty good nick. Best of luck. I might consider losing the front tints, but I'm leaning towards leaving the rear ones. Quite like them. Really you should lose all tint and get a Rayban Classic G-15 style 80 - 70% green tint for the rears. It's the factory MB color. Should be a pretty cheap and easy affair! I think you'll love the result. Wheels will be a quick fix too! Consider getting new tires though, you'll have much better performane. This is a bit more $$$ involved though. Keep on Ballin'!

Ah yes Excellent work on the cleaning! You must have been jolly chuffed with yourself after that. They do look good when clean and glossy. I know exactly how you are feeling driving it as I still love mine after 10 months (and 2.5k miles) of ownership. The noise and G force is addictive to say the least! Mine has secondary cats and resonator removed (and remapped) and if not already done to yours, makes it sound more like one of the modern AMGs. I actually have the same grille as you too but bought it intentionally as preferred it to the avantgarde one. My car had an aftermarket grille on when I bought it. The interiors are really hard wearing and always look mint. Regarding the traction control and LSD, the ESP system will brake individual wheels to assist cornering. So it has a sort of electronic diff. You get used to this and once you do the handling of the car is amazing. I've shown friends how you can floor it through some twisties and the car does it all for you, much like a modern car. It's amazing that even 20 years ago, these cars had such a complex set up where the G/Box and engine ECUs are taking info from the T/C and ESP systems to ensure the car is doing what the driver is intending. The AMG mods to the gearbox make a big difference here. I also like how it holds on to the gears when slowing down and sounds lovely downshifting. It still feels strange that a W210 sounds and goes like this! Well done, I hope you have many happy miles in it

I'm looking forward to getting a few more miles in it under my belt, to see what it can do, especially having read your thoughts above about the TC/ESP and handling. I quite like the Avantgarde grille, but I might spray the grey plastic bits between the chrome vanes black. I do actually like the look of a big three pointed star in the grilles that are sold as AMG. I understand they are not genuine AMG, but I'm contemplating getting one. Yours looks great. I was seriously contemplating making you an offer when you had it for sale recently. Bet you're glad I didn't haha.

I bought the car knowing it needed some welding. The guy who had it before me was 100% genuine and honest about it, so it was always factored into my sums!

We always used to do this in the old days. Hence why I like the 'normal' grille with only 3 horizontal lines which is how Mercs always had them. Funny you say you want the 'AMG' grille with the big emblem in the centre. That's what my car came with and I got shot of it for about £40! I remember all the others on EBay were expensive and it took me ages to sell, originally trying to sell it for £60. Thanks for the compliments, you're right I'm glad the car didn't sell. I just wanted something older as switching from an E28 BMW felt like a lot of charm was missing. Look forward to seeing the progress

Reminds me to get mine started up again - been on the drive and not moved in the last 6 months - ( battery is on charge as we speak) You got the sunblind option too - something daft like a £750 extra when new. Little 'noise' vid of my 98' prior warmed - this has no cats or resonator

I do love these and I have been looking at them more often! Was an RRer selling this? FWIW I've tried the following on the headlamp revival techniques -G3 -Toothpaste -Megs kit Out of the lot the Meguiars kit shifted the stuff the best and left the lamps looking nearly new. The others did work but not that well and they took an absolute age! That was on a Renault Clio. The only thing is that you will need something to seal them up. That could be an amazing polish or a UV resistant coating you can buy off eBay. Best of luck with the car .

If not, all you need is a medium for cleaning and lubrication (WD40 if greasy, but mostly water and soft solvents), some white stone for abrasive or cutting compound if you already have detailing products and a microfiber cutting pad or MF sponge (something puffy with fine strands, heck even a normal Terry bathroom towel will work). Try it, it works so well you'll be ass down in shock. Happy restoring!

Yep I agree that the Meguiars stuff seems to work best on the headlamps.

I had good results with 1500 wet and dry, followed by compound and a few coats of wax on my e39. Certainly a good result for less than £10 anyway.

I took the E55 to it's first car show yesterday. It looked quite good, and received a lot of attention. Can't wait to get it looking mint.... My mate, the detailer, came round this evening. We had a dally on with the headlights. Great results achieved with 400 & 1000 wet and dry, then a machine polisher. Offside from this.... to this... Nearside from this.... to this... The offside needs another slight go, as that's the side I did!! Much better. Just need some wax on as a protection layer. One job ticked off the list

That's some difference. Did you do it all by hand. The reason I ask is my 75's lights need done and was wondering what to try.

Welder making good progress. I bought a full sill for the drivers side, which is on now. He's starting the nearside later on today. Tons of pics, which I'll post at some point.
