Has anyone used chrome-effect paint before? I was considering painting some plastic parts to look like chrome, but I'm not sure if it'll just end up silver. Your experiences and product recommendations would be appreciated

Have a look at alclad lacquers meant for model making they look really good but need airbrushing over a very smooth black base coat. Most realistic chrome paint you can get though.

I've tried a few of the aerosol chrome paints, when I was having trouble with the reflective surface on my headlamps going off. I had reasonable success, but I do think they're really "bright silver" rather than chrome-effect. I made some wheel centres and used it on that, they've been quite good but the big thing was - don't put lacquer over it. That lost all the brightness and made it more like a grey colour - like putting lacquer over "silver wheels" paint. lufbramatt I'll have a look at that stuff, I need to do some more wheel centres soon.

TBH I'm not sure how durable it would be for wheels. Might be ok with a decent 2k clear but you'd lose some of the metallic effect

Could you just wrap the part? The other option would be chrome hydro dip Chrome paint gets you close, but you will be amazed at how expensive and toxic the stuff is to work with Stuff out of the spray can probably wont cut it. but this is some of the claimed results. Please post results whatever way you go so we can all learn.

Right, thanks chaps.
I've ordered some "mirror chrome vinyl wrap" to try and am looking at the Alclad lacquer option...watch this (or a nearby) space...

this place does proper 2k paint in an applicator of their own design so you don't need a set up for a gun. customcreationpaints.co.uk/look for hydrochrome on their site. they painted a wooden chair for my mate some years agoand the finish was so much better than expected

Thanks, I did come across customcreationpaints while googling...looked a bit pricey to me! News on the "mirror chrome vinyl wrap"...not good. Looks only slightly shinier than the "dull" side of bacofoil. Not good enough for me. Not keen to invest over £100 in spray equipment for the Alclad option, with potentially unknown results. I'm looking for a cheaper option than buying a proper spray kit.

Approach a paint shop? Perhaps they will paint it for you if you supply the good stuff?

Is it worth trying to find somewhere locally that goes hydro dipping? The results of that seem pretty good (even if that is only on the videos I have seen of it being done)

Actually my wife knows someone in Great Yarmouth who does hydro dipping (stop sniggering at the back!). I can put you in touch if you are interested?

Thanks Fad, that'd be great.
I can get an idea of the costs that way and if it's not too bad I could ship the parts there and back.

Any local model-making club, where a member might have a suitable airbrush for the Alclad stuff, and maybe even have some experience with the product? I don't know whether there are so many model clubs around any more.

I've used Alclad chrome paint on some model cars in the past and it does come out quite reflective, but its not very durable and if you lacquer it it goes dull and looks just like bright silver. It's really just for show, like on model cars etc and not for any serious use. I've tried this www.specialistpaints.com/collections/kustom-canz-custom-aerosol-cans/products/shadow-chrome-canzbefore and its not too bad, kind of like the powder coated wheel photo in the post above so not mirror finish.

only stuff i have used is VHT chrome plate spray, which is a rattle can 1k epoxy stuff, approx 7 quid for a little tin depending where you look. its pretty reflective, not exactly chrome that it claims but impressive for a rattle can despite fastidious prep and giving multiple weeks drying time (even in a greenhouse in nice weather) it was horrific, never really dried properly kept rubbing off on my hands making me look like the tin man from wizard of oz avoid !

And there was me thinking I had done something wrong when I sprayed my centre caps with the same stuff! Tried it on a really rancid VW camper headlight bowl a few months ago with not brilliant results as well
