only stuff i have used is VHT chrome plate spray, which is a rattle can 1k epoxy stuff, approx 7 quid for a little tin depending where you look. its pretty reflective, not exactly chrome that it claims but impressive for a rattle can despite fastidious prep and giving multiple weeks drying time (even in a greenhouse in nice weather) it was horrific, never really dried properly kept rubbing off on my hands making me look like the tin man from wizard of oz avoid ! And there was me thinking I had done something wrong when I sprayed my centre caps with the same stuff! Tried it on a really rancid VW camper headlight bowl a few months ago with not brilliant results as well I too had similar results. Never seemed to set fully and left fingerprints if pressing hard on the surface.

Not chrome 'painting' per se, but this is a spray-on silver nitrate solution.

if it is just for small strips then use aluminium tape polished and lacquered over just done these for the Barracuda. V-tech Vitasol polish works better than autosol. not perfect but very easy. and cheap.

I wonder whether that's what might be causing some of my problems - the tins are quite old now. I just don't want to buy any more as they're quite expensive and I know they won't be any good.

I wouldn't bother buying more to see if that's the problem. 6 years from now you will still have them

Thinking about it you could always do a Mad Max and spray your teeth with it just as you are about to die?

It occurred to me the other day as I have some more wheel centres to try to paint up - what I really need is whatever they use to paint the caps on the chrome-effect aerosol tins. The cap always looks great, far better than the results you get with the contents of the tin, so it must "just" be a case of finding out how they're coated.

I reckon it's a cellophane style wrap though...

The answer has already been said....sliver nitrate
This is what is used to make mirrors, and you don't get a lot more reflective than a mirror.
You don't need expensive equipment to do it, just a dual spray bottle (2 reservoirs in one bottle spraying via one trigger)
You have to buy it in bulk to be off any use, but enough to do 100 head lights cost me a tad under £90 quid

Cheers, that does look interesting, I'll have to look into it further. I've just watched the video that VIP posted earlier, but without captions it's difficult to work out what's going on. Looks good, though, and helpful that (if the bloke in the video is still around) it doesn't look all that harmful either. How did your headlights come out, and how durable is the finish? Again, as that video shows a wheel being done that would suggest that it's quite hard-wearing.

My headlights came out fine, I didn't lacquer them as they are inside a sealed unit.....but if you are going to clear it you use a uv resistant clear.....seen some bumpers done and they looked the dogs do dads.
It's so easy, you prep the surface, with like a silver, gloss white/black/red....clean the surface with distilled water, then spray the silver nitrate and the antioxidant at the same time till you get the depth of chrome you require, then clean off with distilled water...then clear
It might look like there is duck load of wastage, but the solution mixes up to around a 45 gallon drum

I've been watching a few videos and looking at various kits - one that contains "everything" is around $500, which is a lot, but probably only the cost of re-silvering four lamps. I take it you didn't go with a kit, based on what you said? I'll have a look around for the various bits I think, but only if I can get entry-level stuff at the right money, $500 is too much for me to play with. I'm also not sure it will work effectively on my wheel centres (which is the main thing I want to do) because the Griffin logo is quite intricate, the base coat might take out some of the detail.
The videos make it look simple and safe, a bloke spraying all this stuff with no gloves or mask, but then those particular ones are in Nicaragua and I'm not sure what their H&S regime is like.

Could drink it if you really wanted to.....and it's not an aerosol as such....so doesn't get into the air....worst case you chrome your hands......but would expholiate it in less than a few houra

Never had a good result with any of the spraycans. Fabulous results with specialistpaints chrome paint.
