I'm all out of love with my Defender for no specific reason but with a growing family have a hankering for an warm/hot estate. I've narrowed it down to a Saab 9-5 aero, Volvo 850 t5, Volvo v70r or Audi A6/S6. Now what are the pros and cons of these and are there any potential models that I've missed? Heres a pic for your trouble

If you can find one, Merc E430. All the size you could ever need, and nothing like as pricey as an AMG. Quick too.

Mondeo wags suck. Too little and the windows don't wind all the way down.

I'm completely biased. You cannot possibly go wrong with a T5 of any variant. 5 cylinders, a turbo and 240 bhp out of the box. What's not to like?

I heard an s6 take off yesterday, quite a bit of black smoke pood out but the noise it made was pretty impressive. I couldn't live with a smokey car though. My parents got a Sierra Ghia estate, brand new back in the late 80's, still remember the smell of it today, twas a fine car.
I've had an e36 touring which i was very impressed with, poverty spec 1.8 but it ran well enough and held its value for when i sold it 3 years later. Highlight of that was getting 20 meters of turf in it... Was about it's limit though. I'd buy it back if i needed another.

Bm tourers were what got me interested in estates way back when I had my E30. I've discounted a Bm estate tho because I need to own some different marques! The S6 does sound ace, 4.2 v8 say no more.

With this choice a couple of years ago I went for the 9-5 aero because they are such good value compared to a v70 or any estate with that power. Pretty cheap to run , and really discreet. Watch out for rust around rear arches under the plastic covers, and the "sludge" issue. The turbo kick is hilarious.
I would have swapped to a t5 if I could find one in manual, but the auto boxes don't have the best reputation. The V70 has a bigger, squarer load space and the cabin seemed better built and more comfortable to me.

I like estates, and i have had a few, my last one was a Volvo V70. It was great, relatively fast, comfortable, massive load lugging area, couldn't fault it really, but it wasn't quite as good as... This was everything the Volvo was, but it was far cheaper to buy in the first place, and it was a V6, and it went really quite well, plus it had more toys etc. So unless you have a particular disliking for big Vauxhall estates, i'd have a look at an Omega estate. Despite it breaking down on the Autobahn one time it was my second favourite estate car that i've owned (the Vovlo is probably the 5th!)

I've always wanted a Saab but the only thing putting me off is the oil strainer thing. How often and whats involved with dropping the sump to sort it?

If you get a post 2005 model it won't need the sump drop at all. IF you want to do it for the peace of mind though plan on 4 hrs and £15 for the sealant for the sump, £5 for the O-rings for the oil pick up plus an oil and filter change. If you find a Hirsch one they're already over 300bhp. I love mine, it's massive, comfortable, very well equipped and was cheaper than any of it's alternatives, it's also only £300 a year to insure with all mods declared.

We have a 2006 Passat FSI T estate. (2.0 petrol engine as in the mk5 golf gti.) 200 bhp.
It was ordered new with some decent factory extras and optioned pearl effect paint. It does look smart when cleaned.
Owned it for about 2 1/2 years now and it has never missed a beat. I have spent money on it to keep it healthy but they are a good engine with only a couple minor inherent faults.

It is a cheap job to check the sump, but ideally you need to look for a post 04 car with revised oil breather system, and one which has had fully synth oil changes from new. Mine had s/h and when the garage dropped the sump it was spotless. Then if you don't find any problems, just stay on top of oil changes. I'm not sure how common failures really are, but a friend had one and was quite slack on maintenance, and he did have a catastrophic oil-related engine failure. If you find a nice one their bargain price makes the risk easily worthwhile, in my opinion. A 300bhp one would be rapid. Edit: post 05 (I think) cars have brutal tax, but before that it's £295 if I remember rightly.

Volvo V70. 4. Volvo 240. 3. Rover 416. 2. Vauxhall Omega. 1. Vauxhall Carlton... Don't ask, i'm a troubled soul.
