I've had a few relatively powerful estates, Volvo V40, BMW E36 328i touring, Volvo V70 (P2) T5 and currently have a Volvo 850 T5. All very good, useful and decent to drive. The V70 was the smoothest, most comfortable (and newest), largest load space too. E36 was a great all rounder, surprisingly good on fuel and a bit tail happy if you wanted it to be. The V40 was really plush but a bit slow (2.0L non turbo) and the 850 T5 I have now is great fun and feels more like a big hot hatch really, seems as quick as the more powerful V70 was as it's lighter and a manual gearbox. I always fancied an Audi AllRoad (preferably V8) but haven't got round to buying one yet, the air suspension scares me for one thing. I'll probably just keep buying older and older Volvos...

Some good suggestions there, do like the Saab but I can only seem to find them in silver which is a no no for me. I think I've found what I want and with 2 viewings on my Defender today all goes to plan I will be unveiling my new purchase shortly.....

There's plenty of black ones and the very odd red one available on the trader.

V70r gets my vote. I had an S60 t5 many years ago, it was a riot to drive, very comfortable and had great bose stereo system. Would have another.

My last 3 have been estates because I find them to be very useful. I've had an E36, with a 1.8. It was a nice car but had a terrible, intermittant and undiagnosable water leakage problem so got rid of that and I won't go back to a BMW. Did used to flick the back end out whenever it pleased too After that was a 2.0L mk3 Legacy (51 plate, bit modern for here) but that was the very best car I've ever had. It did everything I ever asked of it, it started every time, never had anything go wrong, all the AWD system worked, including the hi-lo transfer box which made light work of the Yorkshire Dales. Sadly the clutch disintigrated last Oct and after 4 years I was ready to move on, so I didn't repair it (haven't managed to sell it yet either :/ ) Currently a 2.5 Outback, (53 plate) after Subaru split the Outback and the Legacy lines making it a mk1 Outback but is basically a mk4 Legacy. Thirsty when you're a bit throttle happy but seems to return pretty good MPG's when you're sensible. Might swap to a diesel mk4 Legacy in a year or so if it gets too much to run. But I would recomend Subaru quite highly.
