Need help picking a more fun winter ride. "Winter" is in inverted commas as a fair bit of the time the capri needs fixing and I'm too lazy to get it sorted form most/all of the summer, and end up using the "winter" car all year round. Last two years I've had a mk1 Honda CR-V. Not exciting, handles like a boat in a stormy sea. Really bored of it and want a change. Before that I had an MG ZR which was kind of fun, but not reliable - it exploded twice. So looking for suggestions (and inspiraction pics!) for something that ticks as many of these boxes as possible:
- Able to fit 4 adults in comfort (plenty of leg and head room in the back) pref 4 door. - Not slow (doesn't need to be insanely fast, but a bit of go is a must) - Decent handling (I miss being able to go around corners fairly quickly) - Comfortable driving position - decent back support especially, the Honda seats are trash - Not RWD (this scares me a little in bad weather conditions!) AWD/4WD would be nice, but will consider FWDs. Not too bothered whether auto/manual - Up to £3k. Could be convinced to stretch to £5k for something really awesome - Nothing too unreliable or high maintenance - Nice looking. Something with some character - Not an Audi or BMW
Doesn't necessarily *have* to be retro, although I'd happily skip some of those criteria (e.g. speed) for a really nice retro. Only possibilities I've been able to think of so far are:
Impreza - still a bit boy racery perhaps? Hopefully the early ones are old enough to have shed this image and now verging into "classic" territory? Wondered about a wagon instead as hopefully they're less likely to have been thrashed. Also think maybe the back would be a bit cramped?
Forester XT - This seems to tick all the boxes, although 175bhp in a car of that size doesn't seem like loads? Have ridden in one briefly, and seemed like it drove well.
Jaaaag X or S Type - Not all that keen on the way they look as standard, not sure how to modify to rectify
MG ZS or ZT - Not sure I want another MG again! It's not a k-series at least....
Alfa 159 - Limited room in the back seat maybe???
Sorry for rambling post, and possibly straying a little away from the "retro" side of things!

As they pop into my head, may not all be suitable:
Honda Civic Aerodeck Mitsubishi Galant Seat Leon Cupra/R Subaru Legacy Ford Mondeo ST24/ST200/ST220 Ford Orion RS Turbo
Just a few suggestions, I think they all match your requirements

You say the Forester, but what about the Forester Turbo, as that has 224 bhp.

Just googled some of the suggestions, and looks like there are some nice options there. Saab is an idea, will certainly take a look at those in a bit more depth. Legacy I'd quite like, but the saloon models seem very rare (maybe only rare within my budget). I like the modifying potential of them though (i.e. I'd need to modify to be happy with their looks! Not bad shape, but bit of a plain jane). Disco is also a maybe, in the V8 variety. Touareg I'd not considered, will look into further As they pop into my head, may not all be suitable: Honda Civic Aerodeck Mitsubishi Galant Seat Leon Cupra/R Subaru Legacy Ford Mondeo ST24/ST200/ST220 Ford Orion RS Turbo Just a few suggestions, I think they all match your requirements Wow, great list, thanks! Orion RS Turbo is a great retro choice actually, had forgotten they even existed! You say the Forester, but what about the Forester Turbo, as that has 224 bhp. From what I've read, only the import spec ones or 2.5 models have that much, and the 2.5 has some reputation for head gasket failure that puts me off. I should have made it clearer that I was talking about the 2L! --- Would love to SmokeEm! I think that kinda of spec is a bit much for me though. There's a nice looking "cross sports" import model on ebay for £5k, but it's 200 miles away, and the horrible interior kinda puts me off too. It's really at the top end of my budget too. If I can get something cheaper I can buy wheels and stuff too I tried Status Moto but they never got back to me, so suspect they felt insulted by my low budget!!! (I think I said £4k to them)

Saab 9-5 Aero. Plenty of power, best seats in the business. Looks good, available in saloon or estate flavours.

You mention an Alfa 159, considered a 166? Like a 159 but older and bigger (and sadly not as pretty but still not bad!). Should be able to pick one up well within your budget. It's an old Alfa it will require more maintenance than a Honda, but I've had mine 9 months now and it's not been too bad. One 'breakdown' which was a blown fuse on the autobox controls, so it went into a limp home mode. Other than that just had to do servicing, a couple of suspension bushes and front brake pads and discs. Stolen inspirational lowered 166 photo from acidicdavey

don't dismiss the Forester 2L Turbo.
If they are looked after there are many miles of fun to be had.
Good luck with your search

+1 for 9-5 aero - I'm chuffed with my estate. They eat up miles and always feel like they have loads of power to spare.
A light pressure turbo saab might be a good bet too as you'd be more likely to find a manual (if you are thinking about driving in snow) and they really are dirt cheap. I think they have can be remapped to similar power to the aeros for very little.

Range Rover classic a good unmolested example is unlikely to loose any money. LPG makes running a V8 a sensible option.
