I know what people are going to say - tyres are the one thing stopping you sliding off the road. However I'm only driving about 1000 miles a year on this full set of 4 I need and only in summer, so I can't justify spending £400+ on a set of tyres for a £400 car.
So what's good?
There lots of REALLY cheap tyres in the 205/50/17 size I need - £30 each or so and I'm steering clear of those. But what about Nankang who seem to make some tyres with more modern tread patterns, or Avon or Maxxis? Any others you can recommend?
Not a fan of 2nd hand tyres to be honest and they don't seem that cheap anyway.

from those you've mentioned I'd use Avon.
also falken and Kumho are good mid range.

Not sure if they still make them but I used to run a set of Nankang ns2's around ten years ago on my Rover turbo.
The car used to be driven hard and never had an issue with those tyres in wet or dry. They didn't last long on the front though.

There is literally nothing wrong with Nankang tyres.
I've had the NS2 on a number of vehicles, including a 280hp 2 tonne RWD Lexus, and it never ended up in a ditch upside down on fire.

See what's on offer and check online for reviews. There will be things that a given tyre will excel at or be inferior at compared to others such as wet weather grip, durability, noise etc. and Its difficult for anyone else to second-guess your priorities.

I've used Maxxis tyres on my Cavalier 2.0 auto without any problems. if I had a complaint, it would be that they are so sticky, they don't last long. Certainly not harmed any nuns or kittens!

Loved the Falken 912 and 914s I've had fitted to the Dolly. In fact the rears have only just died having done nigh on 40k...

ive had nankangs on every 'modern' car ive had for the past 10plus years. NS2 or NS20. I'm still here and so are all the nuns and kittens in all the bus stops i go past.
they're great tyres given the price. my only criticism would be they wear fairly quick, but then the cars i have them on are driven hard so nothing would last that long if its actually gripping. i tend to run very specific/odd sizes, where the only other option is 3-4 times the price, and no better in terms of wear or grip. (usually bridgestone potenza, which are proper sh1te given how much they are). i also find NS2 are fairly finnicky on alignment, if the car isnt set up just right they will really highlight it, but that tends to be the case with most directional tyres. the asymmetric NS20 doesnt show up faults as much.
theres a huge amount of 'emperors new clothes' goes on with tyres, but its mostly just people trying to convince themselves theyve not been done. there may be tyres out there that are slightly better, but is the difference incremental when when a nankang is £36 a corner and a 'premium' is just under £100? personally, i don't think so.

The last thing i would do is buy the mega cheap ones we had a car on loan with some and sounded like the wheels bearings were trying to escape

Just don't buy Triangle TR968s. I'm no tyre snob but damn they are awful. Noisy - sounds like all 4 wheel bearings are knacked (they aren't). Dry grip - so-so, wet grip - nearly none! Really. They probably last well as they seem to be made of bakelite.
They came with the car, spoil the car and being 245/45/18 cost alot to replace. They've got lots of tread left which makes it even harder for a skinflint like me to consider replacing them - but even so, I'm going to have to do it!
Might be ok for drifting I suppose, but not much help on a 4wd car.

I stuck a pair of super budget tyres on the front of my dad's Passat the other day because they were on the cords and I needed to use it. Can't remember the brand apart from one of the letters is a flame, but they're a tread copy of a Uniroyal Rainsport and they stick like curse word to a blanket in dry and wet. Think they were £28 each fitted lol.

And I agree about Nankang NS-2s, I drive quick pretty much everywhere and all the cars I've had them on have been fine.

uniroyal are good value, wear quick, but grip is superb (they are a sub brand of continental. Falkens are good, kumhos have always been good in my experience and I have been impressed with the avon zv5s on my bmw. All fairly cheap to buy from camskil or mytyres. All of the above I have used on rwd cars and have nothing but praise for them given their price.

Barum makes decent midrange tyres. Agree with this ^^ Got a set of Barum Bravuris on my BMW, got them cos there was a deal on getting them buy one get one free. Have been great in the time I've had them, plenty of grip, decent noise levels I think they're owned by Continental or something?

Had some Linlongs (think it means die soon in Chinese) and wanli which I think means something similar.
Have a set of Matador snow tyres on my Golf and must say they have been great.
A guy at work ran landsails on his golf and was impressed with them, which says alot to me as he is mega picky with tyres.
Have continental premium contact or something like that on the vrs, full power = much squealing and little forward motion/much traction control light flashiness

Have run Avon ZV5 on my daily, 182hp TDI Golf 4, for about 3 years and happy with all round performance, wear and wet grip. Local place did 4 (w rated as v weren't available) fitted for £226 all in last time I changed.
