Just thought i would mention something about oil - we all need it for our old cars and new .
I thought i would mention that my new old Honda diesel seems to have a unusual spec for oil , so much so that the usual suspects [ halfrauds and eurocarparts ] either wont say what to use or recommend all sorts of different stuff .
So reverting to handbook i find the oil section and it says ' any oil that meets ACEA B-3 10w-40 .
A quick search and i end up at WILKO where i can get 5L Mobil 2000 meeting that for £24 ! Bargain .
They also sell 5w-30 ACEAb-3 own brand for £22 for 5 litres !
So my point is that if you look away from general car places to buy things it can be cheaper - i for one would have no qualms about buying the Wilko branded oil if it has been made to the manufacturers specification , and they all have to be made by the big boys anyway , just not in a shiny bottle.
I have even had ' RAC' branded oil from B&M before , about 5 litres for £18 - i checked the spec and it was fine for my car . They also have Carlube oils in these cheap as well . Think outside the box and save some money guys and gals .

Very true. My Jag and my wife's CRV both need a 5w30. sometimes ECP have it on a BOGOf, in which case I get 10l for about £20. Otherwise Home Bargains do 4.5l for about £13 IIRC. As long as it meets the spec (and usually it exceeds it) I really don't give a curse word what it says on the can. I've used the Wilkos stuff too and would again quite happily.

See now there will be the usual discussion about premium brands etc. I'm with you on buying whatever meets the relevant specification especially as there are few (only four?) places that do the blending to produce the oil anyway.
I use Triple QX pd specific oil in my golf or buy PD specific off the bay of evil when it comes up cheap.

For my Renault - 4 liters of Castrol GTX is around £15 in Costco. That's all I've used in in for the last 9 years. It's too cheap not to buy. They do big drums of Chevron oil for £40-ish. But it's definitely wrth looking around in places you'd never expect. B&M and The Range are like gold mines for useful car bits.

The cheapest place I've found is a farmers fuel oil supplies place, they have there own brand fully synthetic oils in all different weights for way less than the local motor factors. And of course they do super universal tractor oil.

That explains why 'tractor oil' exists, you literally use it for every oil based application on a tractor. Our David Brown has 'tractor oil' and brake fluid.. engine, transfer case, hydromatic gearbox, front loader, 3 point lift.. all the same oil..

Half what my local dealer wanted.

I'm one of those people who only use "branded" oil. But that's from using cheaper oils in cars with pressure gauges and seeing how quickly it degrades. I tried some of the Euro Car Parts stuff in the MX5 and little after a month it was dropping. Swapped over to Shell and it takes almost bang on one year to start to degrade, which is handy! The oil specifications don't involve having to stay at that spec. for any period of time. My experience is that some of the cheap ones break down far more quickly than the expensive ones. Well, except Castrol of course!

Opie oils will supply 10-40 ASEA B3 Mobil 2000 online for £22.96 and offer most clubs a 10% discount code - so you can get it delivered to your door for £25.65 - If a non premium brand they do G force for ASEA B3 10-40 £11.95 5 litre I have no association with them just quite surprised how competitive they were when looking at prices when having a nose for lights with their 20% off Hella promotion.

I pick the brand on what car it's going in!
In my mini I'll just use the Halfords green stuff, it leaks out so its getting topped up every few months. Whereas on my daily, I only use "good" oil because I do a ton of mileage.

Whereas on my daily, I only use "good" oil because I do a ton of mileage. The 'Halfords green stuff' is rebranded Comma Classic and its supposed to be good oil. I never had to top our MGB up between servicing running the Halfords oil, and it never suffered with oil pressure losses or excess consumption. So there you go..

I bought a chevron drum, having had 2 VW diesels in a row both using the 5w30 it was worth every penny. Only one change left in it now though. Tom

Tesco have been meeting API SN for a short while now, they were long ahead of Asda who have only just got there. Both used to be cheap, but now not so good. Before i first saw SN it was all SM, whether it be Castrol Edge, Mobil 1 or A2B Autolube.. Asda do 20w/50 for those with old engines, though. No idea on the quality!
I Got my Triple QX fully synth 5w/40, meeting API SN, for around 12 quid a bottle, and these are full 5L bottles! Delivered too, off ebay. I bought four, i'm on my second fill of it and this engine is excellent on it, track day tested..
The good thing about Google Shopping is that you can simply view the cheapest item of any given search online. If someone's giving something away, it's there. Yes your local wholesale homeware store just might have something being given away, but it's finding it..
