What year is your Honda Diesel. We had an 54 plate Accord that snapped it's timing chain on the motorway (Apparently part of a recall if you had FSH) Also cracked it's exhaust manifold (Part of a recall, if you had FSH)

I just bought 15 litres of Mannol 5W40 for the Lupo from Amazon; 3 x 5 litres delivered from Germany for £22.

I used to know a guy years ago who was a bit of a plank, he did an oil change on his car & used about 8 or 10 small bottles of 'top up' oil from the local filling station which would undoubtedly have been the dearest way of buying it by a country mile.

It depends for me.
I used to use whatever was cheapest and up to spec for the cars. For stuff I'll keep I am a little different however and go 'branded The placebo effect doesn't help however. Carlube stuff seems to be OK.
As for examples:
-Stag - Verified - On Unipart 20W50 the oil pressure would drop to about 7PSi when fully hot and idling at around 700rpm after around 2-3 months. Indeed I thought the car's engine's days were number and that an engine rebuild would be around the corner. For ages people said to use Valvoline VR-1. Snake Oil I thought. Even a year after leaving it in the oil pressure never dropped below 15PSi when hot. -RS Turbo ZVH - That used to drop to around 12PSi at idle when hot but would be at 80PSi idling when warm on a rebuilt engine. With Millers 5W40 CFS it stayed at around 20PSi when hot after giving it stick around the track on a couple of occasions, even a year later. -Mondeo 2.5T - This is a strange one. It came with a FFSH but the oil was dirtier with Mann filters and whatever cheap oil ECP had. With Mobil 1 3000 and Ford filters the oil stays cleaner than when it was run on TripleQX and Mann filters. -My Clio 172 seemed to run 'quieter' on the Elf stuff but that could have been a placebo and the fact that I serviced the car just before the intervals which may have helped. - I changed the oil every year at around 9,000 miles, when the schedules were ever 2 years or 12,000 miles.
The way I see it if it's £5-10 more and the results as above make it look tangible is it really worth making the saving? VWs for example need PD specific oil for the PD engines unless you enjoy changing camshafts, and in the case of my latest purchase only 1 oil is recommended by BMW (others are said to be fine) and at £40 for 4 litres of 10W60 it is costly to do a service when you need 6 litres for an oilchange!

Oil.
Dear lord, oil.
An absolute nightmare and a complete minefield and I'm talking from experience. The older vehicles say before around 2004 and high mileage stuff you are pretty safe using 10/40w or 5w30 semi synthetic. The problems lie after around then.
As somebody previously said the vw's with pumper diesel engines should only really be using 5w40 pd spec (search skoda camshafts snapping). Later fords have a 5w30 fully synth but c3 spec. Vauxhalls have their own spec in 5w30 Dexos. Mercs, Porsche and later vw's and audis have a higher specced 5w30 fully as using the wrong oil can in the long run effect the dpf's on diesels (a lof these cars now have ad blue in their fueling systems too). Ford ecoboosts have their own specific grade of 5w20 Late hondas use a frankly absurd 0w20 which is like p.ss water in the bottle it is so thin. High performance bmws use a 10w60 grade which i think is mainly supplied by castrol and mobil 1.
Theres probably loads more but those are what i can think of for now.
Your euro car parts oil is what is known as recycled oil. So although yes it meets a certain spec, it is not a 'virgin oil'. That is why you pay more for decent brands such as castrol, mobil etc.
We supply motaquip and comma oil so while they are not an up there brand with castrol etc motaquip it is made by texaco and is virgin (straight from refinery). With the likes of castrol, mobil, motaquip, comma you stand more of a chance with backup should anything go wrong if an engine went bad and the oil was believed to be at fault.
Again i talk from experience as it happened to us and the oil company did their independant tests and the oil was found to be a cheap supermarket special and totally the wrong grade for the car. The customer later admitted this!!!!!
So anyway in conclusion, go ahead and buy cheap oil but know what your buying and make sure its right. Its your mode of transport at the end of the day.
Or if in doubt take it to a garage thats what they are there for.
I'm no good at plumbing so i call a plumber...........
Yeah. Oil.

^^^ on the back of that, the specific oil listed for my MR2 is branded Ford and Vauxhall in most parts catalogues. The stuff branded Toyota is the same grade, but has different letters on it... So simple?! :S

It will also depend on what components are in the engine etc. like the PD engines, where the camshafts and lifters are under quite a bit of stress as a result of 4 fat lobes being present to pump the injectors (the injectors are the pumps on those engines ; search Unit Injector engines).
Ford Require a 913A/B/C and now a D spec.
Peugeot gearboxes and Renault items require a GL4+ gear oil which GL5 generally being a no-no in those. They use brass syncros which don't take kindly to the stuff in GL5.

Definately worth it for not spilling oil all over the rocker cover (tongue firmly in cheek)

I pick the brand on what car it's going in! In my mini I'll just use the Halfords green stuff, it leaks out so its getting topped up every few months. Whereas on my daily, I only use "good" oil because I do a ton of mileage. The 'Halfords green stuff' is rebranded Comma Classic and its supposed to be good oil. I never had to top our MGB up between servicing running the Halfords oil, and it never suffered with oil pressure losses or excess consumption. So there you go.. snap, our little mini gets the same stuff, it likes it... I once tried semi-synthetic in it, bad mistake, the auto box started flaring between gears straight away, swapped it back for the Halfords stuff and all was good in the world again.

My mum got me a few bottles of Castrol lead additive from Wilkos once for about 20p per bottle.
Also a while ago bottles of screenwash were super cheap too.

Wilko also do a classic 20w-50 oil , i wonder what that is like or who its made by ? If its anything like the B&Q 20/50 I use it as a cheap engine flush oil, I will only use Halfords (as already sad its Comma) in the Triumphs. I've used the cheaper stuff before and the engine is noticeably noisier and it doesn't hold oil pressure as well.
