Looking in to swapping to an electric fuel pump on my mk1 Cav.
What type am I best going for and are they relatively easy to install so far as wiring goes?

I bought one from JJC on eBay for about £20, rated up to 225bhp I think and I expected it to suck, turns out it's pretty damn awesome. Run one on my Vauxhall powered mini with no problems.
I also bought another one for transferring fuels from tank to tank and it does the job pretty well.
I ran mine pretty simply, but I guess it depends what you're fitting it to?

The Cav is just running it's standard 1.6 though it does have a twin choke Weber fitted.

Make sure you get one for a carb not injection or the pressure will be way too high.

One thing with that type of pump is don't fit an in line filter between it and the tank unless the fuel take off is from the bottom of the tank, it won't work (guess who found out the hard way!)

Make sure it will do the 1-5psi as stated in the description as 4-6psi may be too much for a standard carb.

OK, I must be missing something obvious here :-) Why will an inline filter stop fuel flowing unless take off is from the bottom of the tank?

The pump connected directly to a top fed tank pulls fuel out OK but the volume of air in the filter seems to act like a damper and you never get any fuel pulled up, junk the filter and it worked fine (only after found this after I had bought a second pump)

Thanks for the advice guys.
Electrics not being my strong point how difficult are they to wire up?Will I need to be buying relays and stuff?

At the most basic level it is one earth wire and one live when ignition on wire. An enhancement which makes sense is to also add an inertia switch securely fixed to the structure in the ignition feed wire, you shouldn't need a relay with one of these they don't draw much current.

Personally I would have a relay in there as well and an inline fuse, but they are very easy to wire up

Have you got the pump back to front flow wise? Where have you located the pump?

Got it the right way round yes. It's located right next to the tank, well within the 12 inches it says to.
Says the pump is self-priming.

take the pipe off the carb, suck the fuel up through the pipe then try it
Silly question is there enough fuel in the tank?

Fuel gauge is hit and miss but it's got at least a petrol can full in there cos that crossed my mind to!I will have a go tomorrow and see if I can suck anything through.
