I watched it and didn't think it was too bad. I concur with most on here MLB seemed cool and Evans was annoying.
I think most people had become indifferent to the usual top gear antics and it seems such a waste to use almost the same format and ideas with new people slotted in, there was always going to be comparisons drawn.... Like when they suddenly changed pippa in home and away!! But eventually you won't notice??!!
Maybe ther is only so much you can do with a car program and Clarkson and Co exhausted all the ideas. I guess we will have to wait for the grand tour to find out?

I watched it trying to keep an open mind. By the end, I'd enjoyed it. It's worth remembering that it's the very first episode with the new format, and it'll take a few to warm up, and for Evans and MLB to find their feet properly. I remember when TG was originally reformatted and the three public schoolboys plonked in front of the camera, and it seemed fairly awkward at times. exactly. people need to go find season 1 again with jason dawe (remember him, before james may?) if they really want a cure of insomnia on a sunday night also not forgetting there was some serious backlash at the time, when the chris goffey / quentin wilson "magazine" style top gear was binned.

I personally think Chris Evans is seriously talented. Anyone that can generate a career like he has didn't do so by being lucky. He is just like Clarkson - Marmite. My Wife is a big fan of Chris Moyles - I can't stick the bloke but again, he must have some talent.
I just think the BBC told Evans to keep a similar feel to the show and maybe allow it to evolve going forward. At the end of the day, if you really can't stand MLB or Evans etc, stay away from BBC2 at 8pm on a Sunday - plenty of other channels to view.

I enjoy listening to Chris Evans on the radio although I am opposed to the cliques of celeb presenters that the BBC seems to foster, I think it can stifle new talent and I seriously doubt most of them are remotely worth what they're paid. Yes he's undoubtedly a talented guy as you say and definitely a Marmite personality, I think that his optimum medium is probably radio. I'm with you on Chris Moyles!

MLB made me chuckle. Whilst watching i imagined it can't be easy for him but i hope he stays. Definately the most charismatic part of new Top Gear
Putting Chris Harris in the main show would be a bold and brave move. I think the BBC is so fixated on viewing figures it won't take risks
Would be sad if this ends up being the reason the show gets cancelled
I'll watch again. I don't there are many things i need to do instead. Iplayer allows user control / skipping so that's ok

So Ijust watched the Extra Gear, that is what the show shouldve been. There is actual chemistry, the films were well done with no awkward script and its the first time Ive enjoyed a TG interview. Put MLB in that and it would be a good show. As it stands the new one is just awkward. Ill be interested to see how it progresses. Exactly this ^^

I didnt think it was nearly as bad as everyone makes out. Once you get past the fact Chris Evans is a bit of a tit and his crack is stale it was half decent. It will improve, its the first episode.
Anyway, it was better than the soap opera the old one had turned into and there is no Richard Hammond so it is instantly better.

I would like to see Finnegan and Freiburger get a turn on extra gear with a head to head in British Roadkill...

Ended up watching it again with the Mrs. Her opinion was 'it's just dull', citing that Clarkson etc drew your interest, something that Chris Evans -at least when he's playing Clarkson role- doesn't. I didn't really watch him on the likes of The Big Breakfast -although like every teenager at the time was a little jealous he was married to Billie Piper- but didn't mind him on Radio 2.
I think the big difference with Top Gear is that it's a much narrower window of interest. Breakfast entertainment is somewhat more dynamic, and interspersed with a lot more to break it up, along with material that comes in from listeners to add further dynamic. It's something he's good at, and could translate well to Top Gear if he manages it properly.
It has potential to be able to work. The Land Rover/Jeep segment the was good, although the first bit with the Reliants wasn't what you'd call engrossing. Matt LeBlanc also proved his worth with the piece on the Nomad, although some of it did seem more like it had been scripted for Richard Hammond.
I suppose as I've already said, if they can produce the show to suit the hosts, not try too hard to be Clarkson, Hammond and May, and -I suppose most critically- manage to be interesting to watch, then there's milage in it.

Just to add to the above, MLB in the Nomad I was impressed with how fast he was driving that thing!
Also, I suppose it's possible that the writer's had already written this season for CHM and they didn't bother to rewrite it.

Watched it, I am someone who drifted away from the previous Top Gear.... gave it a go out of curiosity and won't watch again rather spend an hour playing Forza 6. Can't why any fans of previous format would not like it other than not having their favorite 3 on it. I wondered that myself. If 'the 3' had put out exactly the same programme, id imagine people would be raving about it. If that were the case, its probably more to do with the chemistry between the presenters. When MLB was doing the offroad bit on his own, There was owt wrong with it imo. Chemistry or the fact the infantile fanboys are still hurting because their God can't go round punching staff and being mildly racist, the "PC GOONE MAAAD!!!111" brigade are going to make sure someone pays... TG was as pointless and dull and fake as its ever been... same same. Won't watch again not because of the new presenters but because its still as curse word as it was.

Peraonally, I'd love them to do a version here... TOP GEAR - The Wooden Cart Special Mrs Sanchez tests the latest people carrier Mr Sanchez gives his thumbs up to the Day Van version The kids loving the sleeper There could be a jokey section on amphibious vehicles too And, of course, a useful DIY maintenance slot Yes, I think that could work. You could even have a presenter with ginger hair, as they'll not have seen many before and everyone shouts on TV anyway.

I think they should have bought back William Woollard...! Job done... Wooden Woollard.. To be fair i enjoyed those days, in fact it was he and his bearded co-host who got me into Top Gear in the 1980s when it was very much a magazine for testing real-world cars, even if it did have a hefty dose of middle-class about it (back in the day when people used to talk properly). Since the 1970s, other hosts include.. Angela Rippon (first presenter, 1977) Noel Edmonds Julia Bradbury Quentin Wilson Kate Humble Vicki Butler-Henderson Brendon Coogan Jon Bentley Sue Baker Frank Page Tiff Needel Michelle Newman Steve Berry Andy Willman (yes a presenter before producing the most popular era ever, plus working on the Amazon one) Jason Dawe and the trio as mentioned, and then there are the Stigs..

So it seems the people who don't like it are those who don't like marmite Chris Evans.
I'm pretty sure he was parodying JC in the "tonight" intros and probably won't stay.
The presenting style and studio setup isn't copying the old TG, the old TG pinched that setup from TGI Friday.
The "features" in between I dare say were ones that were already prepared last March before things kicked off so it will be interesting to see how things develop.
What I don't know is whether the people that come up with the challenges / OB features are still the same as previous series because I'd got tired of those any way.
Maybe extra gear is really a fresh pilot series to see how people react and based on viewer feedback for those sections / presenters more of that content will merge into the main show and become the new TG.
I'm pretty sure that as CE was already in contract with BBC they gave him the job of being the foster parent of the show to blend the transition over so people didn't tune in and go who are these nobodies alongside Joey from friends.
Incidentally I too enjoy MLB's style in Episodes too and he plays the "I'm just Joey from Friends role" well.

Was average as far as car shows go. Nothing spectacular. Matt Le Blanc was OK but needs betters script writing. Chris Evans is just wrong on so many levels. I'd drop Evans and get Harris on with Le Blanc. That would probably save the BBC a shed load of cash too.
Will give it another go but not holding my breath.
I will be be watching the old team on Amazon (whoever ^ said SKY needs to read the news once in a while!).
