It's funny that they seem to feel the need to have 'celebs' to carry it. When it was rebooted, and even when Edmonds presented it it had a good mix of journalists and presenters - not A-list Divas screaming for your attention. When it was rebooted May wasn't known - and wasn't even in it (some plump guy - don't remember his name left after S01) and the Hamster was unknown apart from local radio - so it seems a shame that the two new 'unknown' presenters - Monkey (Chris Harris) and Rory Reid were 'relegated' to 'Extra Gear' (I know they aren't unknown to YouTube and Jalopnik fans, but the the wider public they probably are). So I feel like they should have been allowed on the 'main show' to earn their chops, as they were both great, and Extra Gear was a show that to me at least was head and shoulders above the main event in terms of content, presentation and chemistry between the people. Sabine talking about lying about her license and taking her mums E30 out on the ring, Rory being spooked by the Wild Boar, Chris on the track in the Nomad and dissing that guy for his murdered-out BMW X-series were all priceless, real human moments, and not particularly scripted or overwrought. What we got on the main event was clearly the sound of producers bricking it, and being too timid to 'break from the winning formula' even though the Evans and LeBlanc haven't earned your trust enough yet to pull off so-called 'challenges' and the bravado, cameraderie and real (not scripted) tomfoolery that is needed for those segments to work. Instead we got two three wheelers pootling up a motorway doing nothing interesting at all. And two 4x4s doing a tug of war. "Never has so much effort gone into going nowhere" said Evans in the voiceover.... The irony. Jason Dawe was the plump chap in the first series of New Top Gear. He was dropped for May. who had actually been a presenter way back in the 90's on the original Top Gear. Hamster was there from the first series of New Top Gear. They persuaded May to rejoin. www.google.co.uk/search?q=James+may+in+old+top+gear&safe=off&rlz=1CAASUD_enGB661GB661&biw=1093&bih=540&tbm=vid&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwipnsilkYXNAhVKIsAKHW95CkcQ_AUIBigB&dpr=1.25

I'm hoping that this series has been thrown together to try and keep the franchise going and there'll be a bigger refresh and bigger changes for the next series.

If Chris Evans stops bellowing and gurning like a tit it'll be ok.
I liked LeBlanc he doesn't take himself over seriously and makes fun of the fact he's an american.
Mind you I liked joey from friends.

Jerry Springer could have said it for Evans with "Somebody once said I had a face for radio and a voice for newspapers" and that Matt Le Blanc reminded me of Joey on Friends but without the acting range. Otherwise it was a perfectly tolerable use of the licence payers money i.e. I give it one season.

I've just watched it and was expecting it to be terrible after reading all the comments. But it was alright. No worse than it was before. There's cars in it so I'll watch it. Doesn't really matter who's talking the carp in the between bits.

Watched it, I am someone who drifted away from the previous Top Gear.... gave it a go out of curiosity and won't watch again rather spend an hour playing Forza 6. Can't why any fans of previous format would not like it other than not having their favorite 3 on it.

If 'the 3' had put out exactly the same programme, id imagine people would be raving about it. If that were the case, its probably more to do with the chemistry between the presenters. When MLB was doing the offroad bit on his own, There was owt wrong with it imo.

I thought it was a real let down! Chris is annoying and can't drive! Matt Le Blanc just looked out of place and even uncomfortable and it was cringe to watch. For a first episode it was pants! I kept an open mind but sorry........... The show aired with 4.4 million viewers and ended with 1.3 million viewers! Thats a lot of people turning over Can I ask where you got the source for the end of show figures? All I'm seeing is the 4.4million and CE is claiming it rose from that during the course of the hour. Not disputing it, just curious of the source. Friend works for the BBC

But they have the personality to push through. Most comments seem to show the content isnt the main issue its the personalities. Once they sort the presenting I would expect complaints to move to the content which is far too wooden and scripted. Its always been scripted but its just so badly presented now and that is an issue from the end of the Clarkson era too. We had a whole thread here about how it had lost its way or just got old.

Having watched it, I didn't think it was bad. Refining it to suit the presenters would be a good direction to go, but otherwise I don't see what everyone has been getting so upset about.

I think the route of the problem is the BBC, they turned Clarksons TG in to TG as we currently know it when they took over it in 2012 (I think it was then)
The writers need to (as said above) write the show to suit the new crew rather than what they are doing atm.
I honestly didnt mind it, it was better than I was expecting. That said, I am looking forward to GT even more now lol.

My wife and I watched Extra Gear first then the main one. I will start by quoting my wife......."I enjoyed the cricket more" (England v Sri Lanka final day) and that's coming from someone who has never really watched cricket! Personally I found Extra gear interesting, if a little bit cringe worthy in places, but far more petrol head relevant. 6/10 As for main top gear Chris Clarkson (I mean Evans) was trying way to hard, too loud, too set up, too cringey. Matt Le Blanc on the other hand was entertaining, acted well and felt like a genuine addition and very watchable. The format was to similar to the old one and I think the rally cross addition was a good idea BUT not different enough. I'd have had them doing something very different, drifting, off road course, full rally stage or whatever, just felt like a half hearted attempt to be different. Not enough Sabine, tbh they should have axed the Stig and just had Sabine do the laps. Rating: 5/10 Needs to pay more attention in class and get homework in on time. p.s. it could be worse....... the could have brought back Steve Berry..... groan those days were soooooo irritating

I'd forgotten about Steve Berry - he really was carp. Didn't Jason Dawe do another programme with Penny Mallory - cant remember what it was called but IIRC it was not too bad.

o I only saw the last few mins of new top gear on its debut night. Now I have watched it all and it wasn't as bad as I have read in the paper and online.
You have to watch it without thinking of the 'old' one really. Still it could be better, will watch again. Didn't like the reliants and jeeps feature at blackpool, that was pants.
Didnt like the new track layout, I know Rallycross has made a bit of a comeback so is quite "in" but we all know it was better how it was before. Or could they call the feature "A star in a curse word car" and the car would be something less great than the one that was reasonably priced.
Presenters are weak, so therefore I put forward my preferred ones: James May, VBH, Edd China. we can keep the Stig, and perhaps have a rolling/random guest presenter for certain features.
Will watch again, it will either be worse that the first one, or better.
oh yes, I didnt watch the "extra" part of the show on bbc4online

I notice Chris Evans bleating on about TG haters in the news after 'dismal reviews' of 'Flop Gear'. Ladbrokes offering 1/4 odds of CE not seeing a 2nd series. BBC reportedly keen to retain MLB by waving a blank cheque in front of him.
