I know I hated Tom Baker when he replaced Jon Pertwee as Dr. Who, (until I got used to him). Same here! I'm sure there are plenty of youngsters around now who will assert that Christopher Eccleston was better than David Tennant or David Tennant was better than Matt Smith or Matt Smith is better than Peter Capaldi and Peter Capaldi will have been a better Doctor than whoever he replaces. err..... he's already replaced Matt Smith.........

I'm pretty sure he was parodying JC in the "tonight" intros and probably won't stay. Let's hope so, replace him with Harris.

That's what comes of posting when tired. I had meant to say Peter Capaldi will have been a better Doctor than whoever replaces him, (subjectively speaking of course). That has actually put a germ of an idea in my mind .... If Grand Tour goes belly up, how about Clarkson for 13th Doctor? He won't take any sh*t off the Daleks, (especially when they tell him "No Steak"!) New feature, extra-terrestrial in a reasonably priced saucer. Additional entertainment by doing donuts in the Tardis, etc.

Tonight's was definitely an improvement. In fact the only real negative for me was Chris Evans' screeching high pitched voice. To be honest it really detracts from the enjoyment for me. Not his fault I know.

Agreed, tonight was better, if they could find a volume control for Mr Evans I'd be much happier

Strange, I thought that apart from the Mclaren bit, it was pretty poor, I had decided to give it a second chance before deciding, but I won't be watching it again.

Evans was on the BBC3 Extra Gear and came across a lot better. Also Rory Reid would make a good main show presenter. He doesn't seem like he is trying to live up to some pre-existing 'showbiz' persona

I think the problem is lack of chemistry between the presenters. I wish they'd changed the whole thing completely, to me it all feels a bit of an act, and completely false, a bit like american, or australian top gear does. But the second show was better than the first, and I'm going to stick with it for the whole series in the hope that it continues to improve.

It was an improvement. At least there were one or two moments that raised a smile, but it's still pretty poor.

Never thought the first one was as bad as many suggested (especially considering how bad a lot of the old trio's shows had become) especially when considering the format as a whole ie new "Top Gear" and "Extra Gear" but thought there was plenty of things that needed improving. The second episode was a big step up and so am hoping the show continues to grow and improve.
As the presenters find their feet and hopefully things evolve I have no doubt the show could surpass the previous line-up. CE does need to calm down a bit but there will always be plenty who will dislike him. There are plenty of good signs for the show I just hope people give it a chance and that those that really hate it (especially those who just want things as they were) stop watching and wait for the big budget amazon show, so those of us that like having a varied choice of car entertainment don't loose out.

I wish they'd changed the whole thing completely, to me it all feels a bit of an act, and completely false, a bit like american, or australian top gear does. I sat there asking myself why am I not enjoying this - and this is exactly why. It feels like they are acting to be something they are not. Didn't Chris Evans say that TG wasn't broken and didn't need changing? Of course it was broken, that's why JC had to do daft things to keep any level of interest going. It would have been better if they'd reinvented it from scratch and done something different. It's like when they replace an actor in a series part way through and keep the same character going, it just doesn't work.

Apparently the viewing figures were down by a third. Replace the increasingly annoying Evans with Jenson Button who did a much better job of presenting while driving like a loony

The old Top Gear worked because there was a genuine warmth and friendship between the three presenters, all different away from the camera, different personalities but together made the show watchable even when when it got a bit stale. I actually thought that the new TG was going to be very different to the old, but its just the same with worse presenters.
