I've been asked to help find a second car for my mother in law. She fancies a convertible and has a budget of 2k ish. Her main car will be for big runs, so she just wants something small to medium for smaller journeys. My first choice would have been something like a mx5, but she's had a double hip replacement so something that low would be a bit much,
I'm a bit stuck on this, any suggestions? It can be retro or newer, as long as it fits in the budget.

Mercedes SLK 230, the best of both worlds. Solid roof that folds into the boot. Available from 1997 I think. Just watch out as some can suffer from rust on the wheel arches and between the bumper and front wing. Early ones have a part time super charger and later ones have a full time super charger. I have driven both and couldn't really notice the difference.

We had a Saab 900 Turbo convertible. We loved it. A great car. Only down side to having a convertible in Australia is that it is just to hot. Got sun burned all the time. We sold it and bought a "normal" car with an ice cold airco!
Cheers

I've got a Volvo C70 convertible (04 reg). I just need to replace a faulty PAS pump, service and MOT it and it'll be for sale within that budget.
A bit on the big side maybe from your description, but is fully loaded and has fantastically comfortable and supportive seats you wouldn't get in a smaller car and electric everything so very user friendly. Will be a mint car!

Volvo C70 or Saab 900/9-3 would be my first choice for a M-I-L. Both decent looking cars and comfortable.

Here's what you want. OK a 325i might be an ask on budget but you should find a post-facelift 318i if you look around, or better still a Baur. Perfect 2nd car. Modern enough to be reliable, retro enough to be cool, and best of all it's an appreciating asset, look after it and it will pay for itself.

Just chatting with my other half, she is really concerned about her mother going anywhere near anything rear wheel drive. I'm trying to put this quite nicely, but she's not a very good driver. She wouldn't know the difference between front and rear wheel drive. Plus there's no way my lass will let me get the mother a bmw as my lasses dream car is a e36 convertible, so she'd be super jealous! A side note my lass is a good driver and has driven lots of rwd cars including my old supra. Her and her mother are like chalk and cheese when it comes to driving and cars.
From what we can gather, she wants something she can pose around in. So a MK1 golf would be ideal, but a quick look eBay and apart from one they are all over £5000. I quite like that Astra that DVee8 has put up, that would be ideal, but not sure if she'd go for that. A few have suggested saabs and Volvos but I think strada hit the nail on the head, a bit too big.
Comervan I could see her in a new shape beetle. Composimmonite, mk3 golf is a great idea, and tons of those in her price range, but I'll have to show her one to see if she likes it. Elwoody I'll have to google the smart, I'm not familiar with it.
Cheers to everyone who's replied, if there's anything else not been mentioned, please ad it on.

I had a MK3 golf a few years ago, it was perfect and I loved it. I only sold it because it cost me too much to commute in.
I think you'll end up with a 206cc, they seem very popular with non-car people who want a cabrio!
