My 1994 Audi 80 2.6 wont reverse!
Forward gears work absolutely fine, just nothing in reverse. I've never had anything to do with auto's so booked it in with a local auto specialist, they code read it and it had no faults (that cost £78) They said all they can do is recondition the box, that will be £1800!
Anyone know about these things? I'm convinced its something fairly simple like a band or reverse drum. I don't have any time to work on it myself but if anyone knows a good place that are willing to just fix whats wrong rather than a blanket repair that would be great. I can arrange for the box to be removed locally and take it where ever, but I'm in Northants!!

M&T transmissions in Sheffield have done them for me in the past, always been very good
The problem with not doing a full recon on a customers box is going to be about giving any sort of warranty on it
I take it you've done the obvious level check, filter and fluid change if you don't know when it was last done?

Cheers for that, will give em a call tomorrow.
Yeah, i understand the warranty side of things, but the cars only really worth 600 so its just not worth doing the full job. even if i could just use it for a bit while I look for a spare box, as they are quite rare. Only had the car 5 days so would like to get driving it a bit!
Fluid level checked and ok, when up to temp. the fluid and filter where changed 3k ago.

I use to work on a fleet of Vw sharans 2007 models. They would decide not to engage reverse. Was always the reverse solenoid. We use to order them online for about£38 each. Not sure if yours is similar and I can't remember the company who supplied us sorry.

not sure and i guess someone will correct me but are you supposed to check the oil level when the engine is running?

I've had this happen myself on Range Rovers. From my own experience with other auto boxes, most often the cause of a lack of reverse gear is contamination in one of the valves. The contamination usually comes from one or more of the clutches breaking up. Flushing the box will do little as the clutch(es) that are breaking up will continue to do so and the problem will instantly return. A transmission specialist is unlikely to attempt any cheap, quick repair for this fault because they know the problem will come back. Hence a reconditioned box or reconditioning of yours will always be the preferred route they will want to take. The torque convertor will also need replacing as the fluid that remains in it will be contaminated too and the debris will find its way back into the box again.
If it were me I'd be looking for a second hand box and t/c with a thirty day warranty - long enough to fit it and determine that it is Ok. Either that or sell the car with a known fault. Chances are it will cost you less in the long run to simply get shot of it as spares or repairs and take a hit on its value.
Most commonly auto box oil level needs to be checked with the oil hot and the box in neutral, not park). However, check the manufacturers instructions to confirm the method
