I find it strangely ironic that the defender (and I include SI-III, 90s & 110s in that) isn't environmetally friendly enough for the modern world yet we are told that 70% of those built are still running. How sustainable do you want it to be? It's a safe bet that whatever replaces it will be so complex as to be no longer financially viable after 15 years or less. But enough of that, I still have fond memories of driving round Manchester city centre in one of these. People really did give you a wide berth in it. Absolutely brilliant fun.

I went back to Solihull today, didn't have time to get to the track but 25 years with the company man & boy I really felt a hole today. I took a lap of the factory as I left and sadly acknowledged each Defender I saw.
I had one as a company car and vowed today I will have another.

A sad landmark in history, but what a legacy!
I ran a '65 88" when I was 19, it was awesome and I'd love either a series 1 SWB or a series 2 LWB now.
I am currently working towards a more family friendly/acceptable old rangerover.

I have a '94 Defender, my 6th L.R. They are certainly addictive! I wonder if they will still make it abroad somewhere?

My old one... With my UK '38 Playing in the long grass, taken using a handy stick. Still alive last time I looked.

Previously, in the pOG collection... Dead? Resting? Still alive?? There was another one as well - 496 UXW, a '62 88" - which I can't find any pics of at the minute. That seems to be still with us too.

They might still be building them as the Santana versions? Sadly Land Rovers image suffered abroad when they started adding in electrical complexity, the saying in Aus used to be "If you want to go bush take a Land Rover, if you want to come back take a Toyota..."

If you're not a sheep farmer in Wales or in the armed forces I just don't understand why you'd want one. Without doubt, one of the best off roaders ever, but hateful things to drive on your local dual carriageway, A road etc, I mean horrid.

Let's be clear the defender was an upgrade (if that's not an oxymoron when talking about LR) of the 90/110 series that came about in the 80's and absolutely not been produced for 60 odd years. They were/are too small inside to drive without having the window open and even then you have to do an odd large steering movement with your left hand and catch it in small increments with your right. Unreliable, uncomfortable impractical in the real world and unless you do a shed load of work no better a 4x4 than produced anywhere else. I laughed as i watched the last one on the news having the door fit 'adjusted' on the production line by the bloke opening the door and manually adjusting the window frame by bending it. I had the misfortune of selling the 90/110 at a dealership when they came out and they undoubtedly had the shoddiest build quality as well as reliability and were an out of dated piece of automotive kit even then. I have driven them off road and on, had the misfortune to be stuck in the back seats for hours and generally hated the experience all round. Not a fan myself and wanted to counter the inevitable rose tinted specs views that are being expressed, but good luck to all those that love them.

I do like them but I totaly agree, they should have made them 100% bullit proof after all those years making them..instead of making over priced over rated Chelsea Tractors for the rich and famous. When I needed a 4x4 I looked at all the options and bought a Toyota....it was an old surf and was amazing but above all reliable, un-stopable and comfortable.

The last defender rolls off the production line with horns sounding and lights flashing...they think it's a fusebox issue.
I'd love a defender, had a hankering for a county recently.

Always liked them, less so the nauseating accessorised versions. Have to echo some of the opinions above though, they were often chronically unreliable and usually badly made. That said, I hope a new version soon appears and further secures the company and their workers.
