Hello all,
I have recently accepted a job offer in Hinckley with a motorcycle manufacturer (can you guess who!? haha) I start in September once I have finished uni.
Does anyone stay in or know this area well? The internet seems to be full of tails of how rough Hinckley and Nuneaton are and there chav culture. Any advice on places to live would be much appreciated! Also on any local car clubs or groups in the area, I am unsure if I will have Mk2 golf or mx5 on the road at that point though, but will be looking to get involved in any auto test type events.
Ideally I would like to be within 10 miles so that I can cycle in when the car is in pieces.
Any area advice or info would be much great!
P.S if anyone lives there and does mountain biking I would love to pick your brains for any local-ish riding

Hinkley and Nuneaton are alright. Same as anywhere in the Midlands really, good areas and bad areas. Both got small town centres with standard chain stores, not a lot of nightlife to speak of, Birmingham and Leicester are reasonable close for that sort of thing tho. Good links to the M6 and M1. You can get a lot of house for your money too.

As said above, those area's really aren't that bad at all. I work literally 2 minutes from Triumph In fact we do some work for them. Myself I travel by bus from a place called Earl Shilton which also has a bad name but again isn't really that bad but not a great deal here entertainment wise bar a few pubs and loads of takeaways. Hinckley is part way through having a huge shopping center built including cinema and along with a new leisure center. www.thecrescenthinckley.co.uk/

I live just outside Hinckley but I'm not local and thus can be honest about the area.
Hinckley and Nuneaton are just like any other town of their size to be honest. Charity shops, pound shops, lots of take aways, B&M, that sort of thing. Nuneaton is a perfectly acceptable night out, Hinckley less so. There are chavs, but I've lived all over the UK and there are chavs everywhere.
Hinckley is just being modernised with a new mall that Spudgun mentioned and it's looking great so far.
I see the odd retro knocking about but I don't know of a car "scene" as such - I've lived here a little while now so would be good to meet up with like minded people
Spudgun, I'm on the Barwell/Earl Shilton border, whereabouts are you?

Burbage seems ok. Sapcote is a nice village, although there's not much in the way of entertainment (wife is from Sapcote. We were married there. Live in Kilsby now.) Not sure about car scene. There's a group meet in Desford, but no idea what they're like. I think there's a rod club around somewhere too... and Mallory Park isn't far away!

I think Coventry is likely similar to Nuneaton and Hinckley but bigger, good and bad areas probably commutable to that certain bike manufacturer as well For the Mk2 Golf, check out Dub Club on facebook, they do a weekly meet (when its a bit warmer) just off the A444 near Nuneaton, some really cool stuff turns up, and they're cool with non VW stuff too

There's a fair few classic car type meets around the area in the summer. Bosworth water park meet is probably the biggest and has all sorts, from yank tanks to classic minis and everything inbetween. Plenty of meets at local pubs and stuff throughout the summer months too. There's also a hot rod meet at stoney cove and a decent sized auto jumble/car show on the A47 up past earl Shilton on bank holidays.
As said there are both bad and good areas in both nuneaton and hinkley, and they both have their fair share of 'chav' element, but where hasn't these days?

I used to stay there quite a bit when I used to go to MIRA with my last job. Never ventured in to the town centres but there's some nice sleepy villages around the area.

I lived in Burbage for 3 years and then Hinckley (Hollycroft, 2 minutes from Triumph) for a further 5. My kids still live there, so I know the area pretty well.
Generally it's not too bad a place. The newer parts are a little more pleasant than the older, but I'm not aware of any 'no go' areas.
There used to be massive rivalry between Nuneaton and Hinckley football supporters, which peaked with a lad getting stabbed outside the towns nightclub, but that was many years ago, and things don't really get out of hand these days.
Night life is still sh1t though I believe.
There is a massive classic car gathering in the town centre in August (I think) along similar lines to the Retro Warwick event, so that's worth keeping an eye out for. Other than that, just the usual country shows/fairs etc for retro goodness

^not sure if hinckley fc are still going they were under a lot of financial trouble a couple of years ago.
As said the areas not too bad.
Retropower is very close to triumph, which is always good if you need any work on a project doing. Waiting list, not so
There's a big vw meet in Coventry, I think on a Wednesday, that's very easy to get to.
Ashby folville show used to great in the summer until some got a bit carried away (chavs, old and young). Now I think it's been stopped:mad:

I'm about 5 miles from hinckley. Got a couple of mates who live there, can always ask them about a particular area if needed. don't go into hinckley much though. Nuneatons ok, not a great deal there, but cov is only a couple of miles away from us so we go there more. They both have a bit of a chavvy image but like anywhere theres a bit of that but I think less so these days, so wouldn't worry too much. Lots of car stuff goes on but not very well advertised. Theres dubclub who meet over near nuneaton on a wednesday and a few classic car meets etc. Quite a few mk2s around too (mines my daily). Parts wise its pretty good - ecp and gsf in coventry

I used to stay there quite a bit when I used to go to MIRA with my last job. Never ventured in to the town centres but there's some nice sleepy villages around the area. This would be my preference. A nice little one/two pub village*, ideally still a proper place, not full of advertising execs and other complainers, get in there and then enjoy the peace and banter over a pint after a day's work. * Disclaimer, I'm a one/two pub village guy at heart!

Thanks for the info folks! Sounds a lot better than some of the stories I have read online. I didn't realise Mallory Park was so close! Yeah I'll have a look into some of the smaller villages dotted around, think it might be a little harder to find a spare room in one though. Do you know when the shopping centre is meant to be finished? I couldn't find a date on the site Certainly sounds bearable for a few years

Mallory park is very close. If the wind is in the right direction you can sometimes hear them on that side of town!
I know that the big new sainsburys is open but not sure about the cinema and gym and whatever else is there. If they're not yet it won't be very long.

The least said about that place the better, we don't wanna scare the poor guy off lol. Higham on the hill would be worth a look for you I'd imagine. Nice little village and perfectly placed so you wouldn't have to deal with the dodwells round about area on your work commute, ain't nobody got time for that.

I worked in Hinckley for years, Triumph were a big customer and a great company to work for, as I recall. Hinckley is pretty unremarkable, town always seems a bit rough, lots of ugly housing estates around. If you're young and single then I'd suggest Leicester, it's not far from Hinckley and while it isn't exactly London there's loads more interesting things to do and accommodation choices. I'm sure you'll have new colleagues commuting the same route to keep your costs down. Mountain biking? Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill might appeal. MX-5 Nutz has a lot of regulars from Leicestershire too, quite a few meets. You've got Mallory nearby, Donington and Rockingham not far either. Good luck with the new job, feel free to drop me a line if you need any pointers.

I loved Leicester when I lived there... although that was 15 years ago now. It also depends on the commute you're prepared to make. Leicester or Rugby would be maybe 25-30 mins (or more) depending on where you are. It's about 30 mins from Kilsby, where I live, which is just outside Rugby, it was about the same from Narborough Road in Leicester. In which case is worth noting that I could get to Hinckley in around 35 mins from Ashby de la Zouch.
