Any a 1 car family? We currently have a car each but thinking of going down to one. Good idea or will this cause arguments. She will get rid of her modern corsa to share my civic mb6 vtis. My civic is not 100 percent mint but certainly not a rot box its my pride and joy as I think it has character unlike her 3 door corsa which is a pain with being 3 door.. any thoughts guys

My wife only drives my Falcon when it is absolutely necessary. She has never driven my Wolseley and never will. She has her own POS.

If you've got 1 car between you they'll always be arguments...

You will find that you need the two cars more than you think you do. If you can afford to keep it, then you really should.

over the years ive trained my mrs to park at the end of car parks and drive around potholes etc , she has driven some of the fleet but its just less hassle to have her drive her own car

You're gonna save what, 30 quid a month by doing this? Bearing in mind her fuel bill will probably rise..?
You could just do one hour overtime a week, instead - you'll spend that adjusting the seat/mirrors a month..

We've gone down to one daily. Originally I sold my much loved Audi A4 and we used Soph's Micra Auto, then we sold that and got a diesel. I gave her a lift to work as that was all that we really used the 2nd car for. Saved quite a bit of money in insurance and fuel.
Never caused any arguments. Only problem we have is that Soph hates driving manuals so hayes driving our current car. We're going to remedy that by buying a DSG next and hopefully will have the best of both worlds.
Does mean I have to drive a standard car which I haven't done for many years, but then as she points out I have got my project car to be silly with.

It's very much a matter of your commitments re. work, family & leisure. Plus ease of parking etc.
Every time we've dropped to sharing a car something has come up that means we've gone back to having one each. The worst decision I made was when I rebuilt a Mk1 Escort because we needed a second car, when the kids got into the school over the road I sold the Escort to our window cleaner for £300! With hindsight that wasn't really a good decision.
For me the real advantage of having two cars is you've one to use to buy parts when the other one is in bits. If you've ever ridden a push bike home with a full set of brake discs strapped to the back you'll know what I mean.

OK it's moderns but my wife and I effectively share our 2 main cars, she doesn't want to drive the MX5. Does drive me nuts that every time I get in my car I have to move the seat, adjust the mirror and normally put the sun visor up and I can't leave sweets in the car... and put up with comments about it as she doesn't like it. Conversely I drive her disco without moving a thing, maybe the mirror.

Both myself & my wife are early retired. We tried just having one car but it caused so many problems after years of one each. Actually all the cars are mine with wife using one as the "family" car. This gives me the excuse of something sensible as the family car and then something different as back up used just by me. Over the years it's allowed me to have some wonderful cars as "back-up"  At present the "family" car is a sensible diesel Skoda Fabia with a Smart Fortwo as backup along with Disco, Mahindra & Marlin. In fact even when wife & I worked in the same office we used to take in separate cars to avoid arguments (flexi time so could start and finish whenever we wanted rather than fixed hours. Wife liked starting and finishing early 7.30-3.30 but I preferred a more normal 9-5) |

If you can afford it then keep the 2. Nothing worse than you both needing the car at the same time for journeys going opposite ways. Then one of you has to stand in the rain and get a bus, or pay for a taxi.
My Mrs has her E36 that she uses for work, I've bought an old Audi avant as a runaround. I don't really need a car. I get picked up everyday and dropped home by my mate in the work van. I hardly use it at all. But I just like to have it for there so I have transport on when I do fancy going out. A lot of days I go to work at 7am and we work job and knock, so I can be done and home for lunch if we work quickly. Then I'd be stuck without transport till 5pm when she gets home.
We did both have our daily cars and shared a classic beetle a long time ago. We argued all the time, we had ideas for 2 different looks, I wanted to have a stripped down bumperless car and she wanted all nice chrome. After a couple of months of disagreement I went out and bought her another beetle. So we we ended up with a daily and an old beetle each.

my miss is a far better driver than me calm cool and relaxed. we have 3 cars between us and I'm happy for her to drive them . just need to put her on the insurance for the Triumph .She prob no so heavy footed as me too.

My Mrs is a really good driver too. I borrow her car and she's always used my cars too, and I trust her completely with them. She owns a couple of fast motorbikes too, so knows what's she's doing on the road.
What is quite funny, she takes her BMW e36 to work every day, and this week she borrowed my Audi A4 for a couple of days while her car had a caliper fitted. Her BMW is mint and it's her pride and joy, she was gutted when one of the girls from work came outside and seen my Audi and said "oh that's a nice Audi, you are moving up in the world"

Insurance, tax, fuel, maintenance, MOT, depreciation. If you add it all up, cars are expensive, especially a modern like he's suggesting moving on, it will lose more than £30 a month in depreciation just having it sat on the drive. I guess it comes down to you and your family's needs and finances, my wife and I only have one car, and it's fine. But then, my wife can't drive so not much need for a second car! |

We have a car each and I have a van as well. Mrs doesn't like driving old tat and I don't like driving modern tat so works well. Used to share when money was tight. Always remember refurbing a set of alloys a few years back met her at her mums the first day she drove it with them and it was parked a clear 2 foot away from the curb lol.

don't do it, its a right pain. my bmw is off the road at the moment for some restoration which means we are down to one car, luckily i have a van but its huge and akward to use for most things as it doesnt fit in parking spaces ect and its doing my head in either having to wait till shes home or go out in the van.
if you can afford to keep the 2nd car

If she's anything like my ex she'll never wash it but be great at getting it dirty, never check the fluids but be great at breaking down because you havn't and a warning light has come up (usually when your busy/at work/miles away ect)of course it will be a life thretening issue when the low coolant light appears and shes in a multistorey somewhere whilst shooping for new fooking shoes !
You'll keep filling the ashtray with loose change whilst she emptys it for car parks ect, you'll hoover it so she can have somewhere to leave frys and other assorted food stuffs in the seat runners, you'll know the exact right settings for the heater whilst she will experiment with frying her feet whilst wiping the inside of the screen with the back of her hands leaving smears everywhere for you to clear up (at the same time complaining she cant see out the screen and he feet are hot all the time), good luck !

My missus is a pretty fair driver considering she didn't learn till her 40s and she's roughly the same height as me so no problems with seats and mirrors etc. She is pretty tidy too and even appreciates classics and would love a 50s stepside pickup.
Would I share a car with her? Absolutely NOT! There are times when I use her car and rare occaisions she will drive one of mine (never the Toledo, her bad back and the cars race set suspension don't mix well) I am building a Dolomite Sprint auto with the clear intention that she will be ABLE to drive it and I will encourage her to do so but I wouldn't dream of having it be our only car. Neither of us would give up the independence!

The fuel bill will actually go up, not down, as she's gonna run a less efficient car - same with things like tyres etc because the mileage being done is still the same.. there's no knowing her tax/insurance status but that could be well under 30 a month. I'm with you on the depreciation, though. In fact, whilst it included all costs, my wife was happy to pay 4,500 a year just to lease a car! |
