I've been looking for a new daily lately and Mk3 Supras keep coming up on my want list.. (I blame playing Gran Turismo for hours on end as a child) They seem to be a bit overlooked, not having the rarity factor of the earlier Celica Supra but also not having the Fast and Furious 2 JayZee appeal of the Mk4 I've read the buying guides and about the Head gasket issues that the 7M-GE/GTE engine is known for but was wondering if there were any past or present Mk3 owners on here who could shed some light on what they're like to live with? Are 'normal/mainstream' garages any good for working on them? How much would one expect to pay for a HG change as a precaution? I'm looking at manual N/A cars Also please share pics of sweet looking Mk3's!

I really miss mine, to the point where I was considering chopping the TVR in for another.
Yes, 7M heads to like to let go of the blocks, but if its been fixed (and by now it probably will have been) it will be fine. Toyota were underoptimistic with the torque settings for head bolts.
The MKiiisupra.net forum was a good resource, but seems a bit quiet right now. Certainly not much in the way of examples for sale.
Answer me this though, why N/A? Spend a few k and you could get a 1JZ JZA70....

I was thinking N/A mostly for boring fuel consumption and other money based reasons, but also for simplicity (less to go wrong etc.) Plus I quite like N/A power delivery compared to turbo although I've only had experience with my Saab and turbo diesels haha I don't think my budget would stretch to a 1JZ model as cool as they are unfortunately Edit: Nice car! I do like the rear lights on the import models

Its not. The N/A 7M runs older dated ignition, whereas the GTE is coil pack. Plus if you drive off boost there is nothing in it fuel wise... its still a 3.0 24valve after all.
What is your budget?

I have one, considering maybe selling, low price, it's a UK one, but it's in Belgium near Kortrijk... Contact me in pm for more pics and price if you consider collecting it from that far away... it is a little rough, and a small dent as you can see... ...

And i think a bit underpowered for a heavy car like that (if i'm not mistaken, a MA70 weighs around 1700kg), the lack of torque is what makes it not ideal i think. I could live with it in a 1200kg car just fine, just don't know about one in a Supra.
Overhere the 7M engines have the name for eating big end bearings as well, but that mostly on the neglected ones, everyone thinks it's a fast car, because it's a Supra and forget it's more a GT than a supercar.

Ah ok so the GE is dizzy? Tbh if theres not much in the running costs between the two, I'd probably consider a 7M-GTE as well as the N/A. As long as its better on fuel than my V12 and not as laggy as the Saab I'll be happy I'd like to spend up to about £3k really I think, the idea being that I can get a fairly clean car that I won't be spending a massive amount on so I can spend a bit more on my MG I have one, considering maybe selling, low price, it's a UK one, but it's in Belgium near Kortrijk... Admitaddley harder to find, but great little engine nonetheless. I did see a 1G-GTE one on gumtree the other week, wasn't sure if that engine would be much good, mostly based on my mates experiences with a 1G-FE in an IS200 (admittedly quite a different engine!)

Hmm interesting.. but I'd also be considering things like import insurance being more, not being able to see condition of the car before it arrives etc. I think I'd prefer a UK car ultimately for easiness On another note, whats aftermarket part supply like for them? I presume lowering springs or coilovers are out there for them

HSD on Driftworks are by far the best coilovers out there for these. So compliant and resiliant.
Suspension is the same on all models, its really just the engine and box that changes from MA to JZA models.
Preface cars have open grills, post face have the "nose" in the middle. Interiors are also different on revision models.
Wheels are 5x114.3 so you can imagine the support. 18's fit, 17's are comfortable.

Honestly, these are not as common as they used to be now. I think 3k will just about get you an ok condition 7MGTE, but you will find rust on it as its a UKDM car. Finding a good one might be your biggest challenge...

Cheers for the tip on the suspension, aye I reckon you're right in that finding a good one will be the main challenge. I'm not in a huge rush to buy so I can afford to be a bit picky, I'd rather that than end up spending thousands trying to save a ropey one

Yeah the 1G-FE is a bad example, similar, yet completely different. The GTEs are pretty good, can see 275hp with a simple mods, intercooling, exhaust etc. The NA 1GGE is the best engine ever. If you think the 7M sounds good, theres some Mizuno works videos of the 1G on the tube, it's a nippy, not super quick but It can shift. Doesn't feel sluggish in my 1250kg soarer with a manual box. They're about 160hp standard.

my friend owned one of those odd 24valve normally aspirated but with a turbo badge models (7M-GE is it ?). honestly it was an absolute peach of a car. compared to its contemporaries it was like a space ship with regards to technology, equipment and comfort levels.. his was an auto but still had impressive turn of speed, blue velour interior was acquired taste.
the thing that killed it, no surprises poor rust protection and the usual holed (non existent) sills and wings behind the plastics.

i only have love for these cars, i don't care if they are mint or being kept alive on a shoestring budget, but please don't buy one if you think/planning on getting all your money back from it in a years time, if your money oriented you will end up breaking it and selling all the part, which i hate and dispies happening to a good car, what ever extra you spend you will be rewarded by the sheer joy of driving a great GT car, you may get your purchase price back but all the rest will have just gone towards keeping these fantastic cars going. i would recomend getting a Turbo in either manual or auto as both are great boxes. www.mkiiisupr.net is a great forum for all the info that you will need, it may be quiet on chit chat but ask for help and you will get it. I'm not sure at what type of shows these fit into, as when ever we go the only photo to hit the net are the ones that us owners put up, six of us made the RRG15 TOYOTA SUPRA mkIII TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr 1989 MKIII SUPRA 3.0i TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr TOYOTA SUPRA 3.0i TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr not all of us camped overnight TOYOTA SUPRA mkIII 3.0i TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr and a few from Bristols meet in the Square 1990 TOYOTA SUPRA mkIII TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr 1989 TOYOTA SUPRA mkIII TURBO by shagracer, on Flickr if you want to see more just go to flicker and bang in shagracer supra
