Sometime in October last year we dragged paulw 's dragster out and took it all the way up to Shakey Raceway to end up sitting around all day waiting for the fog to clear. End result - no racing.
So, what could possibly go wrong with a hurriedly organised trip to Brands Hatch for the two of us to watch some historic motorsport and give his Caterham a good run out?
Look at all this sunshine!
It looks like this Midget is trailered behind the Triumph. And the trailer is fitted with slot mags. = Winning.
Another great combo.
I opted not to take many photos, or get into ideal positions during the morning qualifying as the weather was so good I'd be sure to get some decent shots during the afternoons racing.
Galaxie was smoking, but it wasn't the engine it was the inside rear tyre and a distinct excess of power.
Next qualifiers were for an 'all-comers race' and I post this because its a pretty amazing looking Tigra but also note the lack of sun...
In fact that session followed behind a safety car for most of the time until 5 minutes from the end due to drifting mist. The first race after lunch was in bright sun again but was more modern cars so I didn't take any photos. You could see the fog coming towards us again though. and the following race suffered from a first lap 'incident' and combined with the visiblility issues the safety car came out again and the 40 minute race was completed in convoy while we walked around the pits.
Cars still had to come in for a compulsory driver change.
Cars were collecting for the following race.
But these were the conditions on track...
With the marshalls pretty much unable to see the end of their noses let alone the next marshal point there was no way racing could continue.
So we ogled a couple of Sprites....
and a line of Caterhams (many over from France)
And called it a day at about 2:30. Shame. Had the makings of a great day out.
