Well by its nature a sleeper so to speak is a base model or something that does not look fast or flashy , so they are usually built , not a off the shelf model ...

I've got a rusty old Mercedes W210 E420 (1997) would be perfectly within budget. E430 is a nice one too or a BMW 540i touring.
Factory built sleepers all of them.

Thanks guys never thought about factory built ones before the vr4 looks the business but most sellers know it's a beast and are going for good money

This thread confuses me
There are no factory sleepers as people will know what they are capable of. Merc and BMW's, despite being vile executive tat are expected to be fast (even though 99% aint) so can be ruled out
I'm guessing you're asking what's already been done? What's a popular conversion so well documented?
I'm thinking vtec'd mini, redtop Nova and vvti metro kind of thing?

Saab 9000 areo would be my choice, with a few tunng goodies added in znd you have a rapid well handling barge that very few would give a 2nd look at.

Would be fun to turn a Impreza GT Turbo/WRX estate into a 1.6GL lookwise. Front mounted intercooler, normal bonnet. A few tweaks to get it up to 300hp.
That E500 mattnlisa looks like a bargain, if it is the facelifted v8 with 388hp (earlies 5.0 V8 had only 306hp...). Elegance package is essential for the sleeper look.
Volvo 850 T5R will be mentioned in a few seconds.

A lexus gs300 with a turbo bolted to It is a sleeper. Has the 2jz and with just a turbo and head gasket upgrade it's 500bhp
Everything above are just normal cars.

There's a bit more to it than just a turbo & a head gasket to go na-t The other sensible option is just buy a Toyota aristo 3ltr twin turbo go down the bpu route for 400-420bhp

OP - what exactly are you looking for? What type of car do you want to 'appear to have'? 60's , 70's etc? What kind of performance are you looking for? What practicalities are needed? Without the detail of which, there will just be random thoughts.... Put the effort in to the question, and RR will pay out in spades....

This could be the go if you can find a good one. As I recall they used to go pretty hard on the track.
A real sleeper I remember from the early '80s was a BMC 1300 belonging to an older guy I knew. It looked totally like a grandpa car but he'd done the motor up to Cooper S spec plus a bit. It was good for an honest 105 mph and gave many a V8 a fright.

Another vote for the Saab 9000, or 9-5 Aero, a few tweaks 300bhp. Ive a 9-5 Aero estate that's had a bit of work done, remap 3" down pipe 3.5 bar FPR, 300bhp, 440 NMF. 9-5 Aero are well within you budget
