Success this morning- Spent a bit of time getting it ready for a trial run out.. I got the coolant topped up, battery charged up and put the expansion cap on. No over pressurising. much positivity! ready to depart How am i meant to get information from this? No steam after the first run! Despite successes in the coolant front, it wouldnt be an old Citroen without some issue. In this case the weak alternator and a battery clamp that would not tighten conspired to make for a lack of electricity. Very happy with the lack of steam despite it being running for 1.5hrs. just the charging and 1000 other things to sort now..

My Dad had one of these (Familiale estate) which had charging/alternator issues. It was brand new Tailgate rusted through before it was 2 - Ayrshire coast = sea air = rusty CX. It was brilliant apart from that.

Got some more faffing about done on this today - lost 2hrs clearing up the wiring next to the battery. the loom is fairly hacked about and the wires were all tangled. I split them out as best I could and grouped things together logically. It now looks more ordered and fathomable. The next step is to clean up all the contacts, as they are all as grotty as this.. then the rain came on, So I retreated to the house and set about making some cosmetic improvements. the oil cap was hoachin and in need of some serious fettling to make it presentable. At the start it looked like this I applied some wire brush action, some 600grit wet and dry and some anti rust doodah Sad, I know! But if I try to do a bit every time it soon adds up and makes it look much better.. Finally it got a couple of coats of High temp gunmetal, and will get clearcoat later.

I know what you mean, I went from Fords to BMWs to 14 Minis to kids, now i have another Mini to do amongst my lads motorbikes and a house extension, when thats all done (groan) i may dip my toe into the dream car pool, out of nearly 60 cars ive never owned a french or italian one but i now hanker after a BX or a CX so i think it may be an age thing...... Happy new year though, have a good one.

Excellent work, I've enjoyed reading about your exploits. Just an idea re: the starting problem - the car might have a tachymetric fuel pump relay like one on a 205. This supplies power to the fuel pump during cranking (wired into the feed to the starter solenoid), then when the engine fires the relay is kept energised by the pulse from the ignition coil (wired into the +ve coil terminal IIRC). My thinking is you might've disturbed the ignition wiring, somehow disconnecting the feed to the fuel pump relay which would give the symptoms you describe. I could be totally wrong and it might not even have that type of relay but could be worth a shot. Good luck!

I fed it with the Alfa then attempted to drive it to the unit so I could start on the Alternator bolt.. Which started well and then turned into a PITA as it sprang a fuel leak and poured 95RON all over the joint.. It seems to be leaking from the fuel line into the filter (helpfully hidden behind the horizontal coolant pipe in this pic.. I think a flatbed beckons to get it to the unit!

I got a chance to have a look at this at the weekend - first thing to check was the leak of LHM from the solid pipe on the brake circuit to the LH front As you can see, plenty LHM was being flung aboot! I decided to start at the top- disconnecting the flexi from the hard line Despite being a 10mm union, rather than the usual 11mm, it came apart fine. I'll need to find out if it was leaking of if the LHM on the strut is down to the wheel slinging it about. This 17mm held on the banjo bolt setup at the end of the pipe attached to the caliper -an odd set up with a locator pin. The pipe itself is scrap - so I now need to source another. I didnt look for one previously as I wanted to be sure I could actually remove it before shelling out for a replacement. Time to get a hunting! PS- sorry for small pics- the uploader was odd this evening! Click and they will biggify

[a href=" |http://thumbsnap.com/qtO6mK94"] |http://thumbsnap.com/qtO6mK94[/a] Time to get on with the alternator bolt! That'll be saturday sorted trying to dodge this dripping in my mouth as I lie inderneath and spray it. I'm sure it'll come in useful as I work my way around the front end checking and cleaning. I imagine the parts list could get fairly large..
