It's about time I started a thread for my Cavalier so here goes. 1985 Vauxhall Cavalier hatchback in silver. Some photos from the for sale ad That was in December last year and the car had almost a full mot so I bought it and drove it home 200 miles in the freezing cold without a heater ... Or radio! To be fair it drove home without any problems. It was an L spec complete with 3 speed auto and 1600 carb engine so perfect for what I had in mind which was to reshell a rotten CD model which had featured in the abandoned thread on here I'd spent a fair bit of time on the CD but in the end it had rust issues around the sunroof that were just too much to fix so it ended up stripped.

Had a good look over it when I got it home and it needed two small bits of welding. One on lower bulkhead and one on front of passenger sill which is fairly standard for these cars. Overall it was a pretty good honest car that had been in the same family since new and just needed some tidying up Some surface rust but nothing to cause problems I started by sorting out a few minor issues and fitted a new heater motor, radio, and a full service. At this point it was running great and I had intended keeping the 1.6 and autobox in it for a bit but unfortunately an inner cv joint needed replaced which was specific to the auto box and I couldn't find one. So this happened On the plus side it gave me better access to weld the bulkhead.

Gazz81. Yeah they are great old cars especially the Sri models.
JohnD. Your cd was very smart mate and bulkhead is a weak point on a lot of old Vauxhalls unfortunately.

So onto the bulkhead repairs then. It was the lower part where the gear linkage comes through that needed attention. Not a very difficult repair to make and another weak point in these cars are the steering rack mounts which can fracture so they got a seam of weld on them too I put several coats of stone chip onto the parts from the chassis legs down to provide some extea protection All seam sealed and few coats of primer And in colour It turned out pretty good which I'm pleased about and I also took the opportunity to fill the box sections with waxoyl so they should stay solid for a while longer.

So with the bay nice and tidy it was time for a new engine and box That's the 1.8 injection engine from the CD that I mentioned earlier. These engines were also fitted to Cavalier sri's and mk1 Astra GTE's so a decent enough unit. Required new fuel lines and tank, pump etc but it was all parts I had so no real cost , only time. I did stonechip and waxoyl the underside whilst I was there and everything was nice and solid. At this stage I also converted to manual transmission. Again not difficult and I had all the necessary bits to hand so it now has a 5 speed manual and 3 pedals fitted. Engine now fully fitted and running Ran ok but burned oil slightly. More on that later.

Turned my attention to the interior and decided to fit a few upgrades to the basic L spec. 6 dial gauges, leather 3 spoke steering wheel, and a cassette holder in centre console - even though I don't own any cassettes The seats from the CD were a rather nice dark coloured velour and were in very good condition. However, they were taken from an early mk2 Cavalier and don't fit in my car without a lot of work. Fortunately these turned up and not only are they in good condition but they bolt straight in and are a good colour match They're Recaro's from a mk3 Cavalier GSi so don't stray too far from the car's origins. I got a full GSi interior and by the time I sold the bits I didn't need the fronts turned out to be free which was nice. Rears from the CD fitted Need a clean but match the fronts quite well I think I need to change the door cards to the darker set from the cd which again in very good condition. They are for electric windows though so until I get round to fitting the motors and regulators the old door cards and manual windows can stay.

Onto the exterior now which was a little bit scruffy in a few places. So started off by taking front passenger wing off to weld up front of sill Welded and seam sealed The lower sections of the doors and wings required a tidy up. No major rot just surface rust So rubbed down, filled, primed etc And in colour Again it's turned out ok but I still need to get a coat of paint on rear arches. They are solid but a little bit pitted. I intend a full restoration of this car so it will be properly resprayed in time but for now it will be fine. Took the standard wheels and suspension off and fitted a set of alloys from a mk3 and lowered it 40mm

Took it out for first time since fitting new engine and popped in to see a mate who also has a mk2 Fitted a lower front valance with fog lights and a later grille which you can just see in this photo It ran ok but there were a few puffs of blue smoke whilst accelerating so think the bottom end will need attention soon. So, took the engine out and popped the old 1.6 back in but have it running on the 1.8's fuel injection which seems to be going ok. It will keep it mobile until I get round to sorting the 1.8 out. That's pretty much me up to date with this car and I'll try to post as and when I make progress. Thanks for looking.

I really like ride height of your car. It's exactly what I would love for mine. Good job you told me your secret.

You can see why the mk2 was a rep favourite - they're just so well designed and look so...right. A mate had a scruffy X 1.6 plate years ago and it spent like curse word off a shovel. Great work so far - interested to see what's next.

Baggabones - thanks
Blacksaff - they do sit a lot better lowered. On the above photos beside my mates saloon which is on standard suspension you can see the difference.
MK2VR6 - the 1.6 is surprising for its size. That's what mine currently has albeit with the 1.8 injection fitted.
I don't have any major plans for the near future. I've got electric windows and central locking to fit when I get a chance but I intend to use it for a year or two as it is then I'll replace the sills, sort out any bodywork, and fully respray it. The rears of both sills have previously had repairs which are of a decent standard and are good enough for now.
It does need an mot right enough but I'm sure it won't throw up anything to worry about and I'll need to get the 1.8 rebuilt and back in so enough to keep me ticking over.

I had four of these , all new , back in the day starting with a 1.6L and finishing with an SRi . I was fortunate to have had many company cars but I loved the Mk2's and travelled galactic miles in them. Nice to see one getting saved and used , well done . Here's my first , the 1.6L . I think it was five months old at this point of it's all too short life ..............

I've always had lot of love for these and always had one. I currently have a white saloon SRI and previously had a GLS model which was in the Coldplay video, Charlie Brown. Good work your doing
