I keep running into bolts on the cars, that I think "it would be so much easier if I could just heat it up" - how much is a decent oxyacetylene setup these days? I've used them plenty, but never bought one...

A good couple of hundred , just for the hoses regulators flashbacl arresters etc then the bottles which you will need to rent , and i doubt many people will be wanting to rent to [ i presume] private homeowners to have in there garage .
Just buy a bottle of map gas if you need that sort of thing .

That's a very good point - I hadn't thought about whether they'd want to rent to me.
Will a map gas blowtorch be powerful enough for getting things "cherry red"?

Yes it will I have a blow torch attached to caravan Gas bottle and that gets plenty warm enough

Yes you can get them from screwfix or anywhere like that . A lot more convienient and safer than a gas set , and takes up much less room !

I'd like to know this aswell, i've been eyeing map torches for a while myself, as a proper oxy setup is quite an investment because of the bottles. The rest of the kit you can find used for a reasonable price. A propane torch doesn't get anywhere near hot enough. |

umm... I use a chef's creme brulee torch... surprisingly it actually does make a (bit) of a difference...

Oxygen and acetelyne are now available on a no rent term but the acetelyne in particular is pricey, if you just want to toast, siezed bolts etc the next option is oxy propane, next down is the mapp torch.
In the past I have put the burn on a ball joint using an ordinary blowlamp, took a long time, but got there in the end, now I have a full oxy propane set, less portable than a blowlamp but a lot quicker and if wanted can be used for cutting,
I would suggest going for the mapp option, only then if you find it insufficient, go up to oxy propane, acetelyne only if you want to weld

Mapp is pretty good but it doesn't have the guts of oxy. A decent mini ducter is as good as mapp no better and £600 more. Get a decent torch though, it does make a difference.
Be VERY careful with mapp. My father had a cylinder go up on him last year. I know its rare but 27 skin grafts are not something you really want.
