My "mate" has been caught drink driving and ontop of that had no insurance ( i know he is not insured if he is over the limit anyway). anyway his car has been impounded and he has now offered it to me. Now i thought that the car would automatically be crushed as he had no ins but he said he was told he could pick it up so long as he had insurance cover to do so but he cant afford to insure it ( yeah i know) Does anyone know how much the cost would be to recover the car from the police and would it be crushed automatically its a fairly new focus with very low miles on it so might be worth it to me to get it but if the costs are too high i would rather just walk away from it Any thoughts anyone ?

Understand it's not the Cars fault, if you can afford a car and a few ales you can afford a Taxi.
Sometimes people only learn when it hurts them in the pocket!

The longer its in the pound the more expensive it gets , my old E class got impounded when a mechanic had it , turns out his license had expired .. Mine was towed and impounded for 1 night , around £200 iirc , that was 4 yrs ago though ..

Have you asked the police? Surely they can give a figure how much it would cost to get the car out of the pound. I'd have thought for a fairly new Focus with low miles it's got to be worth doing.

Hi, You will have to insure and tax it before they will release it, and before you ask they won't release it to a motor trader on his policy. you can confirm all this with the police.

Afaik to recover from impound, you will need to provide proof of insurance to cover the car, then its pay the recovery and storage fees. Before going any further I would suggest getting an hpi check to see if there's any outstanding finance, Ttfn Glenn

All the costs will be on the forms your mate will have got when the car was impounded Last I heard it was around £160 release fee, with £30ish per day storage on top

£150 for the recovery, £20 a day storage. to get the car back the car has to be insured, you cant use your full comp policy to secure the release of an impounded car. How about you get your mate to insure it and pay the insurance for him then he can get it back to sell to you, he then cancels the insurance this will cost you two months premium but with six points on his licence and a pending ban for drink it wont be cheap.
If the car is deemed to be of value (usually more than a grand) the police may auction it via either Ebay or local auction.

Colin That's not the concern of the compound, they only care if the paperwork has been checked by the police and the owner hands over the cash.

You'll also need the v5c to be in the name of the person collecting it and they'll need proof of id.

best ask the place that have it
but I wonder, if in different circumstances, say the car was stolen from a driveway and it was "off the road" and therefore not currently insured, and it was recovered by the police - if you wanted to collect it and trailer it away then you would not then have a need to make sure it was insured, would you?
so, ask if you can recover it with a trailer

You'll also need the v5c to be in the name of the person collecting it and they'll need proof of id. Not in my experience. I've ended up having to do this a couple of times in the last couple of years. You can get someone else's motor out of impound if you have docs that cover you to drive it. And, of course, the readies to pay them. You probably need to take the docs to the cop shop though, not the yard. If it was just down to the yard there would be all sorts of opportunities for nonsense so Plod will give you a stamped form to take to the yard and you pay the yard directly.

Fair enough, maybe each place is a little different. I used to spend lots of time at a recovery centre which the police used to do forensic inspections and general storage. They'd (the owners of the site) would never release a car unless it was yours and you could prove it.
As ever, phone the site to check first and save a wasted journey?

Law changed a few years ago. Whilst you might have insurance to drive vehicles not belonging to you the actual vehicle is required to be insured by somebody else and if driver is banned then that won't be applicable as insurance will probably be voided. www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehiclesYou being covered, by extension of your own policy, is different to the vehicle being insured as now required for every car on the roads. I assume since introduction of ANPR cameras. If registered keeper doesn't have a valid policy in place, no matter who is driving and their 100% legal entitlement to do so, then the keeper gets done for no insurance ! Not sure how trade policies fit in this law change though.
