Ok so I'm with the no drink driving bit, crush the car as it's just a focus, but supposing he was driving a mk1 escort, a mk 1 cooper, golf etc........I think a few attitudes would change then?? Just saying. Police Scotland crushed a Freelander that was only a few months old. The enthusiasts among us, even Landie lovers, might say "good riddance" but that was someone's thirty grand motor so he'll think twice before drinking and driving again. Actually, he may not. He was a repeat drink driving offender, which I think is why they used the most extreme option they had.

All I can find is this: www.scotsman.com/news/scotland/top-stories/drink-drivers-to-have-cars-seized-and-crushed-for-first-offence-1-814296When I was told about it at the time by some L&B motorcyclists, I was told it had been crushed at a facility in Midlothian and that the offender had declined their invitation to watch. That Scotsman article highlights that valuable cars are sold on and specifically mentions a Freelander in the Edinburgh area so I'm not sure what to make of that.

I got stopped by a plod in what looked like a boy racer car one night. As I pulled out of a street two racy looking lowered jappas were turning in and the second one peeled around and followed me. I was winding my '78 XC Falcon out a bit in second gear and just as I dropped the column three speed into top gear the red and blues came on behind me. By this time we were outside the town limits so no speeding ticket. Plod looked all over the car (new WOF only a week previous)and couldn't find a thing. Reckoned it was a random stop. Yeah, right. He just saw a rough looking 25 year old car with a loud (though standard) exhaust and automatically thought it was dodgy. Asked about his car and got told it was one they'd confiscated and they were in the habit of just whacking some lights and stuff on random captured cars and using them for a while until they became known then getting something different. As an aside a plod whose wife I worked with back in the '80s reckoned they had used a pickup with a concrete mixer bolted down in the tray for a while. Would've worked too. No-one would suspect that.

That was Scotland not mainland and was a trial scheme for persistent offenders, even in the UK the police (or courts) have and always have had the powers to seize cars when the offence committed lands the driver in prison. as for police using cars yes they can and do get used for police purposes but not as front line vehicles, i.e you wont or shouldn't see an impounded car being used as a pursuit car. Cars over a certain value will be sold on via auction, in our area it is usually Ebay.

The police will never use seized cars for police purposes here-guarantee it. They do auction some vehicles where a court accepts they are proceeds of crime (POC act Seizure) even then the money will go to the Exchequer (Government)In the same way property subject of POCA seizure would be sold off. No idea if any get used by 'other' Special Government departments.....

You can pretty much guarantee that the Ferrari in Thailand was crushed because someone wasn't getting their cut of the business!

That was Scotland not mainland You do know that Scotland is connected to England, right? and was a trial scheme for persistent offenders I think I made that quite clear in my two posts where I said the Freelander was a repeat offender.

The police will never use seized cars for police purposes here-guarantee it. Yes they do, we have delivered seized cars back to the police for them to use then get them back later to be scrapped even seized 'no insurance' cars can be auctioned by the police.
