Well if you take the silencer off it is going to be loud . You can get something called a supertrap , its like a series of discs that you jam in there but it wont look .

Something straight through but silenced further up the car would work, a cherry bomb as a center box for example. Still wouldn't be very quiet.
NA straight pipes are always ridiculously loud, only Turbo cars really get away with them.

You are never going to get a straight pipe to be anything but fun loud. Totally illegal here in NZ. Just what can you guys in the UK get away with in that respect?

So it's pretty subjective. Presumably the same when you get pulled up by the cops then. Used to be like that here but now we have a decibel limit for which the engine speed it is measured at varies according to the number of cylinders.

Either stick a V8 or turbo infront of the straight pipe  Putting some 90 degree bends in and a large straight through silencer could help, but that's unlikely to fix it sounding like the exhaust has fallen off  |

You could try a decibel killer as used in bikes.
Don't know how restrictive they are though.
As said, a few bends or a larger bodied straight through silencer would help.

And a ' straight through ' tends to mean a silencer with a straight through construction , not a straight bit of pipe with no silencers .
A s/t silencer with have a pipe going straight with only small holes in and maybe mesh rapped as well to limit the amount of gas exiting into the silencer .

Get a resonator somewhere near the middle, cherry bomb or similar.
I have a 3 foot straight through exhaust and it was just silly, I threw on an 8inch resonator I rescued from a legacy I think and its still loud, but its a nicer tone and has taken that edge of it.
All pretty pointless now I've installed a 10inch screamer pipe, but meh...

I fitted a decibel killer thing onto my single box side exit system. Near enough the same volume and an irritating whistle developed. It also choked the engine so much it wouldn't rev beyond 4k anymore. Horrible. Plus it was a pig to remove.
I flattened it with a club hammer a day later.

if theres room then you need to fit a middle exhaust box
I assume that your original exhaust just consisted of a rear box, and its that which you are removing in its entirety?

My Mx5 is running a 2.5" stainless exhaust with two very small straight through type silencers, it was mental loud. The garage I got it from made me a baffle/decibel killer thing, that looked a bit like these :  It whistled and really didn't do much to the volume. A couple of years later I made my own baffles along this design:  Mine use 1 5/8" tube and are about 4" long. With one pushed half way down the straight through silencer and another fitted just in the exhaust tip, the car is now really not far off standard exhaust volume, and the engine still revs out and pulls the same as it did before  It's not the greatest sound though, larger silencers would be a better way to achieve that volume. |
