I'd been looking forward to this one for a while. The first running of motorsport at this venue since the '60s and the pre-event build up sounded like it was going to be quite special. And it was. A huge line up of racing cars from the Edwardian era up to the '60s. Even having just parked there was some great variety in the neighbouring rows. I walked in and down towards the paddock, climbing a bridge over the return road from the end of the hill. There was a trade area which I reckon will see greater development in future years. The monster MGB stopped me in my tracks though. I had a quick wander through the paddock but could hear action on the tarmac beyond and was still getting my bearings with the layout but had established where the return road spewed the runners back to their alloted spots. I think it was the second batch of the day that was running up the hill but shortly they were done and the next batch made their way from the out of sight collecting area towards the startline. That was the first time I heard the thunder of the beast as it rolled along, just visible through the trees.... Soon enough cars started racing up the hill in front of me, tackling what was the second corner after a narrow wiggle through some bales and then out of sight across the front of the house chateau. The oldest cars. Now, you've probably seen the Goodwood promo video or the excellent piece put together by Stefan Marjoram, but nothing can prepare you for the beast. It is just utterly ridiculous. Hardly suited to a narrow twisty course (it was built for the LSR after all) this was the car I had gone to see in action. Just mind-blowingly brilliant. And then what follows it? The V8 Darracq of course! Which gives up only about 3 litres of displacement to the FIAT but is immensly fast and always driven by Mark Walker like he stole it. Seriously, if you have any pre-conceived ideas, that car will totally change your mind of ancient early 20th century vehicles as fuddy duddy, clattering and shuddering London-Brighton style machines. I had a brief conversation with him in the paddock later and he reckons it has about 300hp and around 1000 lbsf torque. It weighs less than a ton. I realised they'd be coming back to the paddock so quickly walked back there to catch them on the return. Just awesome. Really really awesome. It wasn't even 10am yet and I'd already reached pure bliss. Grabbed a couple more paddock shots as I went to find a coffee and to come back down a bit but there was just amazing machinery everywhere. Right, coffee in hand, I put the camera down for a bit and sat in the little grandstand and watched from that same vantage point for a while. Everyone remember the Napier Bentley from the Prescott RR Gathering? The air had gone damp and it soon developed into a full blown heavy shower. In fact at the end of that batch I think everything came to a halt for about 10 minutes. I don't really know as I was sheltering under trees and then in a couple of trade stalls as the rain absolutely hammered it down. To be continued....

Thanks for the pictures... I REALLY wanted to go, but just had too many things to do and not enough weekends. <3 Spider 2 The brother of Mark Walker, with the Darracq that he drives everywhere, owns this (with a more modest 11 litre engine) VSCC Shelsley Walsh 5th July 2015 by Retro Rides, on Flickr

Excellent thread Seth, I went to this as well and was very impressed by the sheer effort that they had put in and hope that it paid it's way and will be back next year.
Would it be ok for me to add a few of my pics here later?

*apple for the teacher* Merci beaucoup Looks like a great meeting... a lot of those were in action at VSCC the week before at Shelsley (I guess being Midlands based it must have a good deal of cross over). Think it'll be on the list for next year. Interestingly we looked at hiring Impney, but you basically need to buy up the entire hotel for the weekend, it is a touch spendy for us!

Excellent reporting and snappage as ever. Sadly didn't make the cut for this one. Maybe the sharks teeth are holding me back?

If you like your cars retro (which we all do) it has to be put down as an unmissable meeting. It was like the Goodwood Festival of Speed without all the corporate bullsh1t.
There were so many retro's in the car park. Loads of MK1 escorts drove in at one point on Saturday.

These events all start out like this, and then as the popularity grows, they attract big name sponsors and all the intimacy goes, as they segue into corporate juggernauts. Cholmondeley is well on the way and I fear that Chateau Impney will follow

Big front engined Indy car looked a bit out of context. That is the Schulz Oil Offy Special owned by the Harper Family,Stuart the dad used to drive this amongst other things,up until a nasty riding accident left his partially paralysed. Now driven by Fred the son. Stuart is a top bloke and engineer ,not many people can boast a TT class winning bike in their living room, and a 55ft ocean going wooden yacht in thier garage.

Rescuedude, That's a bit of a curse word as they told me there was a guaranteed entry for the SpridJET/Goddess combo as soon as I could get it ready. You got a source for this info before I give them a call? Cheers, Ian

This year they lost their main sponsor virtually the day before the event.

Yes they're another league away from Goodwood's 'slick' organisation so I'll keep my fingers crossed for the future.

While Seth was at the top of the track taking such wonderful photos I was down at the start line and holding area eating a very, very good bacon and sausage bap shortly before taking a few photos of my own. The one of a kind Fafnir, no, me neither. Austin Hall Scott EB IV apparently. Scat Type C Targa Floria Fiat S76 aka The Beast Of Turin which when fired up you couldn't see for the crowds it drew. At speed. I then walked up to the round-a-bout for a few action shots. Norris Special. ERA R12C I then dropped my camera and broke it so that's all from me but as every one who was there has already said it was a terrific debut in such a picturesque seting and I hope it returns next year.
